Fort King George

Fort King George is representative of the British presence in the Caribbean. In the 1700s, Lord George Macartney, British Governor General of Grenada and Tobago, authorized the erection on Scarborough Hill of two barracks and double kitchen to house two companies of soldiers, together with capping the hill for a parade ground. By 1779 work was near completion.
In June 1781 Tobago fell to the French. By 1784 the French under General Blanchelande began construction of a fort on the hill. The Fort was named Fort Castries in 1787. In 1789 it was renamed Fort Republique and Fort Liberte in 1790 when the garrison revolted. The British recaptured the fort in 1793 from the French and it was re-named “Fort Scarborough”. Tobago was returned to France in 1801 but by 1803 was again a British Colony. The fort was then referred to as Fort King George after King George III, in 1804.
The Fort was built for the purpose of security control of the colonial territory from foreign invasions as well as local internal revolts from the enslaved. The upgrade of the Fort, from timber to brick, began in 1818, and underwent many changes and additions since. The last withdrawal of the Garrison was in January 1854 as the British government withdrew from Tobago. Fort King George consists now of many ruins, abandoned fortifications, cannons, and several structures which have survived, and it also houses the Tobago Museum.

TOBAGO 1677 Film Intro
Intro to the original film.
The catalyst to produce this film and the accompanying book is the 336th anniversary of two of the most ferocious naval battles in history fought by French and Dutch warships in Tobago. Nearly twenty shipwrecks from the 17th century, an unheard of archaeological treasure, are buried under mud and sand on the seafloor of Scarborough harbor virtually untouched for over three centuries. “TOBAGO 1677” explores this dramatic event in Caribbean history, an event that has never been told before. After five years of research and exactly 336 years later an expert team of international archaeologists, filmmakers and scientists journey back to a time when European Nations fought with each other to dominate the “New World”. In a spectacular quest the team dives down to these sunken relics of our common maritime past to reveal this compelling story to the world, a story about heroic men sacrificing their lives to protect their loved ones and the soil they called their home – Tobago.
Filmed entirely on Red Epic.

Tucked inside Rockly Bay is the cruise port of Scarborough, the capital of Tobago. Framed by mountains, this quaint village-like port has a population of over 26,000. Located on the southeastern part of the island, Scarborough is also the region's economic and cultural center, which includes the largest performing art theater in the Caribbean. Scarborough is a flourishing town, brimming with a brisk vibrancy. Devoid of any touristy pretentions, its street corners buzz with liming locals, while pavement stalls are perused by shoppers and the bars spill out onto the streets.
⚓ Most cruise lines anchor right at port where you can explore the city or catch tours to other parts of Tobago. Delights await you right outside the terminal, where you'll find local vendors selling homemade dessert items such as sugar cakes and benne balls. Venture to the Milford Road Esplanade to find plenty of shopping, restaurants, and entertainment.
⛵ A fantastic way to get around for sightseeing and snorkeling are through one of the many catamaran cruises offered in town. Keep an eye out for schools of flying fish as well as frolicking dolphins and whales that visit the coastal seas as you sail around the island to the sounds of calypso music. Or, explore the wonderful Buccoo Reef by glass-bottom boat and gasp at its colorful fish and coral. ????????
Overlooking the city are the 18th-century ruins of Fort King George. The old fortification is home to the Tobago Historical Museum, where you can browse an impressive collection of historic maps, Amerindian relics, ancient pottery pieces, colonial artifacts, local art and more. Once used as a military prison, the museum is not only informative but offers beautiful views from its commanding hillside location.
If you're looking for a stroll while being immersed by nature, visit the Scarborough Botanical Garden a bit up the hill from the museum. The 17 acres of plants and various trees provide a shady oasis from the sun. Or take a walk through the island's tropical rainforest among birdsong and see the breathtaking cascading Gold and Silver Falls. At 175 feet high, the lovely Argyle Waterfall is Tobago's highest waterfall. There's a bit of a climb to reach the top, but well worth it – a dip in the pool below will cool you down perfectly.
????????♀ If you just want to relax, Pigeon Point, a peninsula of soft powdery white sand jutting into a pale turquoise sea, is Tobago’s main beach attraction. Protected by the Buccoo Reef, Pigeon Point Beach is ideal for families and children. Set on a private coconut estate, the beach is lined with coconut palms, palapas, and a great beach bar restaurant. Pigeon Point's claim to fame is a thatched-roof jetty that has come to be an informal logo of Tobago. Pigeon Point also offers water-sports, cafes, changing rooms, ample shade and souvenir shops to keep everyone entertained.
???? Pigeon Point is about 6 miles from the port; closer is lovely Stonehaven Bay where giant turtles nest (you’ll rarely see them during the day), with a couple of good restaurants. Englishman’s Bay is one of the wildest and most beautiful in the Caribbean, but involves a 45-minute taxi ride.

Louise Kimme Castle & Museum, Tobago Pt. 1
The beauty of the human body captured in trees....Oni Lasana
I visited Luise Kimme Castle & Museum, Tobago in 2011. With the kind permission of the Ms. Kimme, I was able to capture just a few of her amazing community of tree people. She was a fabulous and powerful sculptress, born in Germany she made Tobago her home in 1979.
Her love for the beauty of Tobago, the culture and people came alive in her artwork carved from local trees. A brilliant artisan, it was a treat to spend time with her. I was welcomed into her home, her castle, her museum, her life size characters were as unforgettable as Ms. Kimme herself. She died on April 19, 2013 after a courageous fight with cancer. What a beautiful legacy she left for all to enjoy. May she rest in peace.
