Toccoa Falls - GA
Just another little day trip to a another local waterfall about an hour from our house. The property is part of the Toccoa Falls Christian College and the school backs up almost to the falls. In 1977 the dam above the falls broke and the ensuing flood killed 39 and injured 60 students and staff at the college. It was completely rebuilt with private funds and donations and is truly a beautiful campus. Considering the fact that north Georgia is in the midst of a severe 2 year drought, there was still enough water coming over the falls to inspire. Beautiful 68 degree day in February. The falls are a short 100 yard walk from the Welcome Center and parking lot.

With a vertical drop of 186 feet (57 m), the Toccoa Falls waterfall is located on the campus of Toccoa Falls College in Stephens County, Georgia. Toccoa is the Cherokee Indian name for beautiful.
Some claim that Toccoa Falls is the tallest free-falling waterfall in the Eastern United States, however, the waterfall does not hold that title. Crabtree Falls in Virginia (cascading 1,000 feet (300 m), including one 400-foot (120 m) drop), Fall Creek Falls in Tennessee (256 foot sheer drop) and Taughannock Falls in New York (215 foot sheer drop) are all taller. In addition, one other Georgia waterfall includes a drop that is taller: Cascade Falls includes a 262-foot (80 m) drop.
During the early morning hours of November 6, 1977, after five days of almost continual rain, the dam that impounded the waters of Kelly Barnes Lake (located above the Toccoa Falls College campus) burst, and 176 million gallons of water surged through the campus below in the space of a few minutes. Most of the college personnel who lived in the path of the flood were asleep at the time, and 39 of them were swept to their deaths in the raging waters of Toccoa Creek. The dam was not rebuilt.

Georgia's Hidden Treasures - Toccoa Falls
On June 9 at 8 p.m., John Pruitt, who anchors Channel 2 Action News at 5, 6 and 11 p.m, will spotlight Toccoa Falls on Georgia's Hidden Treasures. Pruitt is a veteran news reporter and anchor. He also was one of the Atlanta area news reporters that covered the dam break at Toccoa Falls in 1977. He returned to the area in 1987 to cover the 10th anniversary of the flood.
Two weeks ago, Pruitt was in Toccoa again, but this time he wasn't covering a tragedy. He was preparing to report about one of the most beautiful tourist destinations in the state of Georgia—Toccoa Falls located on the campus of Toccoa Falls College.

North Georgia Outdoor Adventures | Tallulah Gorge & Toccoa Falls
{July 1st- July 4th, 2017}
Info about the trails we visited:
Clarksville, GA was an AWESOME place for hiking and for a relaxing vacation. Some of the trails we visited were, Toccoa Falls, Panther Creek Trail, and Tallulah Gorge and Outlook.
Toccoa Falls: A few dollar entry fee at Toccoa College, enter through the gift shop and it is only about a 100 yard walk to the waterfall! This is the waterfall from a few shots in the beginning with a straight drop to the water below- perfect for swimming!
Panther Creek: Maybe about 3 miles round trip, with a small group of waterfalls and swimming hole at the bottom. The path was a little difficult, only because it was super muddy from rain the previous night.
Tallulah Falls: SO WORTH IT!! Get the the interprative center early to get a gorge permit- only 100 given per day! Once you get your permit, the park rangers go over the safety rules. It is not recommended for anyone under the age of 8. There is NO path, and you basically just make your way down the river anyway you can. At the bottom, there is a natural waterslide, and it is super fun and worth the trip. The trip down is about 1- 1.5 miles, and the way back up is about 800ft climb in 1/4 of a mile!! (I could be wrong with these numbers, but it's very steep in a short distance).
We stayed at Beacon Place- which we found on AirBnb. It was a great place to stay, and it was in the center of everywhere we went!
*Sorry about some of the shaky footage, I'm still getting used to using a GoPro and using the stabilization feature in Premiere Pro.*
