Hannibal Missouri Celebrates Year of Mark Twain
The American writer Ernest Hemingway once said, All modern American literature comes from one book by Mark Twain called Huckleberry Finn. Visitors from around the world come to the small town of Hannibal on the banks of the Mississippi River in the Midwest state of Missouri to see Mark Twain's hometown. The town includes many of the places Twain made famous in books like The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn. 2010 is the 100th anniversary of Twain's death and the 125th anniversary of Huckleberry Finn. As VOA's Kane Farabaugh reports, Hannibal is celebrating both anniversaries.

In about a two day period, city officials and volunteers built this levee up to withstand a projected crest that thankfully we are not going to see.
17. SOUNDBITE: (English) Beau Hicks, local tourism director
Last weekend with the anticipation of the flood we had great numbers. This week when the bylines became Hannibal on the flood story our hotels started seeing massive reservation loss for this upcoming weekend. We're holding steady on our numbers for the fourth of July and we're just hopeful that message is getting out there, that we're high and dry and we've protected ourselves against Mother Nature.
18. Horse-draw carriage touring down street
19. Low angle of a caf sign
20. Pull out from a newspaper on cafe counter to clerk using cash register
21. SOUNDBITE: (English) Tracey Lake, The Jumping Frog cafe owner
It has a big impact. For example, my father-in-law, who is in Jeff City, said the news makes it sound like we're completely underwater. They showed pictures of the old armoury, which has water up around it, but they said this is pretty much what Hannibal looks like and it's not. Downtown the majority of Hannibal is in excellent shape, the downtown is in excellent shape. We're well protected and we're not going anywhere and we're open for business.

23. Sign outside a 'Tom Sawyer' business
24. Wide shot of old-fashioned mailbox in front of Mark Twain neighbourhood

STORYLINE:
Some flood-threatened towns up and down the swollen Mississippi River in the US state of Missouri believed the worst was behind them on Friday, after makeshift defences and levees held out against the rising waters.
Government weather forecasters scaled back their projected river crests on Friday, suggesting water levels would fall well below record levels set in 1993.
In St. Louis, Missouri, flood waters neared the famous Arch but didn't stop tourists coming to visit, although signs warned of the flooding nearby.
Meanwhile, upriver in Winfield, Missouri, volunteers were still desperately sandbagging to try and strengthen levees.
11-year-old Caleb Couture came along with his family to help despite living almost three hours away.
People need help when they are in this sort of situation and a lot of people say 'well somebody else will go so why me?' explained Caleb. Well if everybody does that then there would be nobody to come.
Small towns like Foley were the worst hit.

MARK TWAIN STUDY | Chemung County
On the campus of Elmira College in Chemung County sits a small octagonal building -- a reminder of one of the nation's best writers. In 1874, this study was presented to Mark Twain by his sister-in-law at her home at Quarry Farm. Here Twain wrote parts of the Adventures of Tom Sawyer, Huckleberry Finn, Life on the Mississippi, and many other works of the famous humorist. In 1952, the study was relocated to the grounds of Elmira College. Since then, many other statues, memorials and collections have arrived to form the Center for Mark Twain Studies. Today, the Center is one of the leading research facilities on Chemung County's most famous author.
A place that continues to inspire, The Mark Twain Study at Elmira College an essential stop on New York's Path Through History.

Samuel Langhorne Clemens (November 30, 1835 – April 21, 1910), better known by his pen name Mark Twain, was an American author and humorist. He wrote The Adventures of Tom Sawyer (1876) and its sequel, Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (1885), the latter often called “the Great American Novel”. He grew up in Hannibal, Missouri, which provided the setting for Huckleberry Finn and Tom Sawyer. After an apprenticeship with a printer, he worked as a typesetter and contributed articles to the newspaper of his older brother, Orion Clemens. He later became a riverboat pilot on the Mississippi River before heading west to join Orion in Nevada. He referred humorously to his singular lack of success at mining, turning to journalism for the Virginia City Territorial Enterprise. In 1865, his humorous story, “The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County”, was published, based on a story he heard at Angels Hotel in Angels Camp, California, where he had spent some time as a miner.

Listening is a more natural way of learning, when compared to reading. Written language only began at around 3200 BC, but spoken language has existed long ago.
Learning by listening is a great way to:
- increases imagination and understanding
- improves your listening skills
- improves your own spoken accent
- learn while on the move
- reduce eye strain
Now learn the vast amount of general knowledge available on Wikipedia through audio (audio article). You could even learn subconsciously by playing the audio while you are sleeping! SUMMARY
=======
Mark Twain (November 30, 1835 – April 21, 1910), real name Samuel Langhorne Clemens, was an American writer, humorist, entrepreneur, publisher, and lecturer. Among his novels are The Adventures of Tom Sawyer (1876) and its sequel, the Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (1885), the latter often called The Great American Novel.
Twain was raised in Hannibal, Missouri, which later provided the setting for Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn. He served an apprenticeship with a printer and then worked as a typesetter, contributing articles to the newspaper of his older brother Orion Clemens. He later became a riverboat pilot on the Mississippi River before heading west to join Orion in Nevada. He referred humorously to his lack of success at mining, turning to journalism for the Virginia City Territorial Enterprise. His humorous story, The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County, was published in 1865, based on a story that he heard at Angels Hotel in Angels Camp, California, where he had spent some time as a miner. The short story brought international attention and was even translated into French. His wit and satire, in prose and in speech, earned praise from critics and peers, and he was a friend to presidents, artists, industrialists, and European royalty.
Twain earned a great deal of money from his writings and lectures, but he invested in ventures that lost most of it—notably the Paige Compositor, a mechanical typesetter that failed because of its complexity and imprecision. He filed for bankruptcy in the wake of these financial setbacks, but he eventually overcame his financial troubles with the help of Henry Huttleston Rogers. He chose to pay all his pre-bankruptcy creditors in full, even after he had no legal responsibility to do so.
Twain was born shortly after an appearance of Halley's Comet, and he predicted that he would go out with it as well; he died the day after the comet returned. He was lauded as the greatest humorist this country has produced, and William Faulkner called him the father of American literature.
Calling All Cars: The General Kills at Dawn / The Shanghai Jester / Sands of the Desert
The radio show Calling All Cars hired LAPD radio dispacher Jesse Rosenquist to be the voice of the dispatcher. Rosenquist was already famous because home radios could tune into early police radio frequencies. As the first police radio dispatcher presented to the public ear, his was the voice that actors went to when called upon for a radio dispatcher role.
The iconic television series Dragnet, with LAPD Detective Joe Friday as the primary character, was the first major media representation of the department. Real LAPD operations inspired Jack Webb to create the series and close cooperation with department officers let him make it as realistic as possible, including authentic police equipment and sound recording on-site at the police station.
Due to Dragnet's popularity, LAPD Chief Parker became, after J. Edgar Hoover, the most well known and respected law enforcement official in the nation. In the 1960s, when the LAPD under Chief Thomas Reddin expanded its community relations division and began efforts to reach out to the African-American community, Dragnet followed suit with more emphasis on internal affairs and community policing than solving crimes, the show's previous mainstay.
Several prominent representations of the LAPD and its officers in television and film include Adam-12, Blue Streak, Blue Thunder, Boomtown, The Closer, Colors, Crash, Columbo, Dark Blue, Die Hard, End of Watch, Heat, Hollywood Homicide, Hunter, Internal Affairs, Jackie Brown, L.A. Confidential, Lakeview Terrace, Law & Order: Los Angeles, Life, Numb3rs, The Shield, Southland, Speed, Street Kings, SWAT, Training Day and the Lethal Weapon, Rush Hour and Terminator film series. The LAPD is also featured in the video games Midnight Club II, Midnight Club: Los Angeles, L.A. Noire and Call of Juarez: The Cartel.
The LAPD has also been the subject of numerous novels. Elizabeth Linington used the department as her backdrop in three different series written under three different names, perhaps the most popular being those novel featuring Det. Lt. Luis Mendoza, who was introduced in the Edgar-nominated Case Pending. Joseph Wambaugh, the son of a Pittsburgh policeman, spent fourteen years in the department, using his background to write novels with authentic fictional depictions of life in the LAPD. Wambaugh also created the Emmy-winning TV anthology series Police Story. Wambaugh was also a major influence on James Ellroy, who wrote several novels about the Department set during the 1940s and 1950s, the most famous of which are probably The Black Dahlia, fictionalizing the LAPD's most famous cold case, and L.A. Confidential, which was made into a film of the same name. Both the novel and the film chronicled mass-murder and corruption inside and outside the force during the Parker era. Critic Roger Ebert indicates that the film's characters (from the 1950s) represent the choices ahead for the LAPD: assisting Hollywood limelight, aggressive policing with relaxed ethics, and a straight arrow approach.
