The Tongariro River is a river in the North Island of New Zealand. The part of the Waikato River from the Waihohonu Stream, down to Lake Taupo, was formally named the Tongariro River in 1945.The river originates in the Central Plateau of the North Island where it is fed by numerous tributaries that flow off the surrounding hill ranges and mountains such as Mount Ruapehu. It then winds its way north, through the township of Turangi before entering Lake Taupo via a number of river mouths.

Whakarewarewa in Rotorua, 2011 @ New Zealand
Whakarewarewa (reduced version of Te Whakarewarewatanga O Te Ope Taua A Wahiao, meaning The gathering place for the war parties of Wahiao, often abbreviated to Whaka by locals) is a geothermal area within Rotorua city in the Taupo Volcanic Zone of New Zealand. This was the site of the Māori fortress of Te Puia, first occupied around 1325, and known as an impenetrable stronghold never taken in battle. Māori have lived here ever since, taking full advantage of the geothermal activity in the valley for heating and cooking.

Fly Fishing New Zealand - KINGS OF THEIR DOMAIN - Back Country Trout
A rare occurrence of good weather early October meant Peter De Boer and myself could access a remote, lower North Island, back country river to “scratch that new season itch”… It did not disappoint with a dozen fish landed and many more lost. Interestingly, most were on dry fly.
With a high river volume from a wet winter, the going was extremely tough, Necessitating many deep wades, swims, cliff-face climbs and slippery crossings, this slow progress hampering our ETA, walking out by the light of cellphone’s well into the night, much to the nervousness of wives and families.
The fish within this system are old and resilient, each one has an epic tale to tell I’m sure and the scars to match.
Sit back and join Peter and I on this fantastic day among some of the best scenery the North Island has to offer.
NOTE: Please do not ask me where these locations are, do your own homework and exploring, don’t expect someone who has spent decades putting in the hard yards, to simply hand over these spots for all and sundry to pillage. I hope you understand. Regards, Andrew.

Waikato Dry Fly Trout Fishing New Zealand
Walking along the Waikato river, Hamilton city
We had one day visit to Hamilton city, which is only an one and a half hour drive from Auckland. We visited the Hamilton gardens, Waikato museum and the Hamilton lake domain. After visiting Waikato museum, we walked along Waikato river.
The information below is from Wikipedia
The Waikato River is the longest river in New Zealand, running for 425 kilometres through the North Island. It rises in the eastern slopes of Mount Ruapehu, joining the Tongariro River system and flowing through Lake Taupo, New Zealand's largest lake.

5166 State Highway 4, Taumarunui, Ruapehu, Waikato
5166 State Highway 4, Ongarue, Taumarunui
This well balanced farm is located 19kms north of Taumarunui on State Highway 4 and offers both a 183 ha free hold block and a further 240 ha lease block.
The free hold title comprises 50ha of flats, fenced up with electrics, flowing on to 18ha of rolling country, then to a further 115ha of steeper hills. The majority of the farm faces East with some North facing hills, comprising only 8ha of ineffective grazing land, with hives making the most of this land.
The 47 paddocks are separated with a mix of conventional, 5-wire and some 2-wire electric fences. Easy, all-year access is provided by good 4x4 tracking around the farm, while Koromiko Road runs though the lease block for easy access to the woolshed and yards.
The farm enjoys scattered poplars and native trees for stock shelter and shade. All paddocks, bar 3, have reticulated water. This is possible thanks to a reliable spring that comes from the neighbouring property, along with a number of others originating from dams.
The Ongarue river flows nearby this property and protects it from some of Taumarunui’s winter frosts. A real benefit if maize was to be grown on the flats.
Both the freehold title and the lease have cattle yards, a four stand woolshed at the lease and 3 stand on the freehold title with sheep yards at both. There’s also two half-round hay barns that provide protection for supplement feed and/or implements.
Accomodation is provided by a well maintained and refurbished two-bedroom cottage with two sleep outs and car ports. With the added benefits of solar water heating, insulation in the ceiling and floor and double glazed windows, this is a beuatifully warm and cosy farm house. Schooling needs are also well catered for with Ongarue primary school only 5kms away, or catch the school bus past the gate into town to either primary or secondary school options.
