Places to see in ( Zaragoza - Spain ) Torreon de la Zuda
The tower of the Zuda of Saragossa is the tower that is in standing of the old palace of the Zuda , Azuda or Sudda, Muslim alcázar located inside the city in which the government was. Its present form is of the second half of century XVI . It is located at the western end of the Plaza del Pilar , behind the Fuente de la Hispanidad and next to the church of San Juan de los Panetes . After the archaeological excavation and the restoration finished in 2001, it shelters a municipal office of tourism.
The tower is in the middle of an area of great archaeological wealth, on the remains of the Roman walls of the city. The walls, more than 7 m thick at some points, with more than 120 towers - some more than 8 m in diameter - and of a length of 3 km, protected a virtually square city. The Zuda was in the northwest corner, next to the river Ebro .
From 714 to 1118 , Saragossa was a Muslim city named Saraqusta . Of privileged position and with a defensive wall famous in the Muslim world; was an important border town, having its own kingdom, taifa de Saraqusta .
The Muslims built close to the wall of the city the stronghold that served as a residence to the governor of the city and was later used by the Taifa king as a winter residence. The tower of La Zuda, corresponds to the tower of the homage of the palace that was built on one of the towers of the wall.
After the Christian takeover of the city in 1118 by the troops of Alfonso I the Battaler , symbolized by the capture of the keep, the building became the royal palace and seat of the kings of Aragon . It was until the thirteenth century , when the palace of the Aljafería was begun .
In 1180 King Alfonso II of Aragon donated the building to the Hospital Order of San Juan de Jerusalén , although maintaining as its own the southern part of the building, next to the old door of Toledo. From that moment it will become a hospital, known as Zuda del Hospital, where the gentlemen welcomed the poor and the sick. Hospitallers would also build a church dedicated to Saint John the Baptist that is not preserved.
From the fourteenth century , the building, which until then was the center of the order in the region of Zaragoza, will become the headquarters of Castellán de Amposta , the highest authority of the order in Aragon . The building also served sporadically to shelter the kings of Aragon, as is the case of Jaime I and his wife Dona Leonor , who were arrested here in 1224 after an uprising of the Aragonese nobles.
In the following centuries the building would undergo several modifications most of which are not documented. The current church of San Juan de los Panetes, built by order of the great Castellán Vicente de Oña , was completed in 1725 and replaced the old medieval church. The tower, which is slightly inclined, is from the 16th century .

Cathedral of the Savior of Zaragoza, Zaragoza, Aragon, Spain, Europe
The Cathedral of the Savior or La Seo de Zaragoza is a Roman Catholic cathedral in Zaragoza, in Aragon, Spain. It is part of the World Heritage Site Mudéjar Architecture of Aragon. The cathedral is located on the Plaza de la Seo and is commonly known as La Seo (Spanish for see) to distinguish it from the nearby El Pilar, whose name (pillar) is a reference to an apparition of Mary in Zaragoza (also known as Saragossa). They both share co-cathedral status in metropolitan Zaragoza. Hanas ben Abdallah as San'ani (? – 718), a disciple of someone close to Mohammed, built the main mosque of Saraqusta al Baida, Zaragoza la Blanca, according to al-Humauydí (1029–1095). The main mosque is certainly one of the oldest of Al-Andalus. The edifice underwent two additions, one in the 9th century and one in the 11th century, under the Taifa king of Zaragoza, Mundir I. During the restoration completed in 1999, a number of remains were discovered, such as the impression of the minaret on the external walls, and the floor of the ancient structure. In addition, the entrance was located in the same place as that of the current cathedral. The arrival in Zaragoza in 1118 of Alfonso I, the Battler did not lead to the immediate demolition of the mosque. He gave the Muslims one year to move out of the town, and on October 4, 1121, the building was consecrated under the name San Salvador, and the necessary renovations were made to allow the building to be used for Christian purposes. The long-standing rivalry between the canons of El Pilar and of La Seo was well known in the 17th century. The cathedral chapter of El Pilar even brought a suit to win the episcopal seat, a suit that was decided by Philip IV in favor of La Seo. The disputes would not be resolved until, in 1676, Pope Clement X made the Solomon-like decision to merge the two chapters via the Bull of Union. Six prebendaries and 15 canons would reside in La Seo, and the same in El Pilar, and the dean would live six months in each one. Also during the 17th century, the old and decrepit Mudéjar tower was pulled down, and in 1686 construction was begun on a new one. The new tower, which was designed in Rome in 1683 by Juan Bautista Contini in the Baroque style, was started in 1686 and finished in 1704 with the placement of the spire. The front was constructed in the 18th century in an Italian-Baroque style that was clearly of a neoclassic aspect. It was entrusted by the Archbishop Añoa to Julian Yarza, a disciple of Ventura Rodríguez. La Seo was built on the site of the ancient Roman forum of Augustus and of the main mosque of the Moorish city of Saraqusta, elements of whose minaret form part of the current tower. The construction began in the 12th century in the Romanesque style, and underwent many alterations and expansions until 1704, when the Baroque spire completed the tower. The cathedral is a mixture of styles, from the Romanesque apse (12th century) to the Baroque tower and Neo-Classical main door (18th century), passing through Mudéjar and Gothic.

Iglesia de San Juan de los Panetes, Zaragoza, Aragon, Spain, Europe
The Church of San Juan de los Panetes is a church of Catholic cult of baroque style located in Zaragoza, Aragon, Spain. It is located next to the Plaza del Pilar - or Plaza de las Catedrales - and to the Fuente de la Hispanidad. It is also very close to Torreón de la Zuda. It is of Cultural Interest and National Monument. Its construction was completed in 1725, coinciding with the emergence of the baroque in the city and the spirit of improving the already decadent samples of other styles - Gothic and Mudejar -, which led to the renovation of the cathedrals of Seo and Pilar. The main reason for the renovation was to replace the destroyed church of the Order of St. John of Jerusalem. In 2013 an ambitious process of reform in the surroundings of the temple and of the zone of the Roman Walls, initiated by the Trams of Saragossa and coinciding with the construction of the Line 1 of said means of transport begins. The consulting firm IDOM / ACTX carries out the initial project, on a proposal of SEM Los Tranvías de Zaragoza and in its conception there is a process of citizen participation through 2,700 contributions. In the church of San Juan de los Panetes, after the authorization of the Department of Heritage, the staircase is renewed, enlarging its dimensions from side to side of the church, with stone of the Puebla de Albortón, reaffirming a wide stand oriented north, In a work executed by Ideconsa. It has a more open fan shape slightly from the west side, towards the Walls. Along with the reform of lighting, the church and all its area has enjoyed a great improvement and urban presence. The space renewed, contains a memory for the victims of the terrorist attack ETA in this place, with the inscription: In this place attempted terrorism against civilians and military of the General Military Academy -30 January 1987- Zaragoza guard Here shaken permanent memory of the victims. San Juan de los Panetes has an octagonal tower made of brick, with a slight inclination towards the Plaza del Pilar. The tower was built in the 16th century, being one of the first elements to be built. Its influence is mainly Mudejar Aragonese with a renaissance touch. It is topped by a bulbous spire. It has a baroque cover of two bodies. In the first one is a niche with the image of the patron saint of the church, Juan Bautista, of baroque stature. The second body of the frontispiece consists of a simple arch of half a point, pilasters on the sides. Finally it is finished off by a straight pediment with oculus. In the interior the temple is articulated in three ships of equal size and height, with no trace of Romanesque. Its vaults are decorated in the Baroque style of the 17th century, with the shape of lunettes. The dome is on the cruiser and on the ground are scattered several crosses of Malta, in clear allusion to the maltesque origin of this church because it was the Order of St. John of Jerusalem - a subsidiary of that of Malta - patrons of its primitive construction. The implicit verticality of San Juan de los Panetes is demonstrated in the large pilasters of exposed brick on the façade. Of classic architecture, they constitute an exquisite sample of the classic art in Aragon.

Places to see in ( Zaragoza - Spain ) Arco del Dean
The House of the Deán (Arco del Dean) is a building formed by two blocks of room - one of them annexed to the Cathedral or Seo of Saragossa -, united by a corridor on a pointed arch in the street of the Dean of Saragossa and constructed like residence of the prior or dean of the cathedral chapel in the thirteenth century.
Arco del Dean was renovated in the sixteenth century in Plateresque style - Mudéjar , although its graceful gazebo of arquillos was soon covered by ecclesiastical decision of the Cathedral. After the War of Independence and the Sites of Saragossa of 1808, property suffered serious damages, being located next to the General Headquarters of Palafox , with which after its abandonment in 1853, it arrived at the state of ruin. In 1951 it undertook its complete remodeling, that maintained the spirit of the state in which was in 1587.
The Gothic work was culminated in 1293. One of the spaces is attached to the Cathedral or Seo of Zaragoza and communicates by means of an arch with the space of the enlargement of the new house. Initially it was built with the usual Aragonese construction system to include an open market in the larger block. This was the aspect that maintained until the new reform of the XVI century.

Lovely Zaragoza
Lovely Zaragoza
Chabier Aparizio, 4-1-2013
Going by tram, going by bus,
Going on foot, riding a bike,
Zaragoza Is lovely and nice.
I'm at Saint Francisco square,
and I'm going to the Labordeta park.
I can see next to me the campus university.
But now I'm waiting for the tram.
Because I'm tired after walking all the day,
through the places and the streets of the city.
I saw the Ebro river and I saw the Stone Bridge,
and I explored the range of its interesting buildings.
Going by tram, going by bus....
I saw the Zuda tower. I saw the roman walls.
I saw the Goya's paintings
and the Lonja and City Halls.
I saw the Independence avenue,
The Juan de Lanuza statue,
The Aljaferia palace and the Carmen Door.
And I saw the museums of art and folklore.
Going by tram, going by bus...

Places to see in ( Zaragoza - Spain ) Church of San Pablo
San Pablo is a church in Zaragoza, Spain. Its original Gothic-Mudéjar building dates to the late 13th/early 14th-century; later it was enlarged and modified several times. The original 14th-century edifice had a single nave with four bays with vaults and flying buttresses, with chapels, ending with a transept and a pentagonal apse.
In 1343 a Mudéjar tower was added, originally near the entrance, but now enclosed in the main body of the building. In the 15th century, two aisles were built. Later, until the 18th century, several chapels were opened on the right side, the front and the back of the church.
The Gothic portal (15th century) has a varied sculptural decoration, featuring images of Saint Peter and Saint Paul on the jambs, and of Christ seated between the Virgin, Saint John and Saint Blaise on the tympanum.
The tower has an octagonal plan, and, like the church, is made in brickwork, part of which are decorated. The lower section is not visible from the exterior, as it is currently embedded within the church: it has an Arab-style frieze. The upper floors have Mudéjar-style decorations, mullioned windows and small arcades. At the top is a pyramidal spire. The reredos (retablo) of the main altar, in gilded and polychrome wood, was executed by Damián Forment (1515–1518).

Lonja de Zaragoza, Zaragoza, Aragon, Spain, Europe
The Lonja de Zaragoza is a civil building of Renaissance style built in the first half of the sixteenth century in Zaragoza (1541-1551) as an enclosure for economic activities. Today it is the exhibition hall of the City Hall. The architect or master of works of La Lonja was Juan de Sariñena, in charge of this initiative of the city council and sponsored by the archbishop of the city, Hernando de Aragón. This is the most important Renaissance building in Aragon. It was also the first to adopt this style, influenced by the Florentine palace of the Italian quattrocento, although with the nuances of the Aragonese Mudejar that we can observe in the decoration of portraits of polychrome plaster. The building material is brick, which is common in Aragonese architecture, where it is not considered as poor material thanks to the influence of Islamic art (which we can observe in La Aljafería) and the Mudejar. Of rectangular plan, it is structured in its facades in three heights, that do not reflect the interior volume, of a unique floor, plus an attic or false that served as a store of arms. In height there is a gallery of semicircular arches. On February 18, 1541, the municipality of Zaragoza, in response to the requests of the merchants of the city and Archbishop Hernando de Aragon, decided to construct a civil building for commercial exchanges, which until that time had been carried out in La Seo and other churches. The work was awarded to the project of Juan de Sariñena, master of works of the city and the Diputación del Reino, which had already intervened in buildings such as the New Tower or the Seo de Barbastro. In 1546 the construction was very advanced, only in absence of the roof that, according to the design of Sariñena, included a tower like lantern like central shot. This structure posed great problems to the masters of Zaragoza works of that time - among them Alonso de Leznes, Gil Morlanes the Young man and the mason master Juan de Segura -, and to the difficulties was added the death the previous year of the architect Juan Of Sariñena. Finally, in 1549, it was decided to eliminate the tower and cover the work with a simple roof to four waters. The first of November of 1551 La Lonja had been officially finished. The functional necessity of a civil building destined to the commerce determined the approach of the market as a diaphanous interior space of three naves and five sections of the same height, with eight columns ringed to 2/3 that support fifteen vaults of crucería starry and very lowered . The columns are of Renaissance inspiration, but the cover maintains the complex crucería structures of the final gothic. The walls are raised with the technique of rejola and aljez (brick with plaster mortar), in the style of the Mudejar alarms tradition, bearing in mind that stone is a scarce material in the city. However, the ornamental weaves typical of the religious constructions of the Aragonese Mudejar were replaced in the Lonja by a band of depressed vertical rectangles, that divide in two the height of the facade to the outside, supported in a molding of imposta or cornice, adorned with Denticles. In the upper floor of the outer walls, there is an airy gallery of double arches that houses twin windows - from their origin closed with glass of small plated pieces (something unusual until the 18th century), although now restored with separate alabaster plates By a simple pillar. In the tympanum that form the double arches, a polychrome ceramic medallion with ornamental portraits is placed, as well as under the windows and between the spaces of the viewpoint of the upper part of the cloths. The facade has a wide eaves carved in wood and four small lanterns, with mudéjar decoration of tiles, in the angles of the building. In the lower floor three large doors open in the central sections of the ground floor, with arches of flared point in an arrangement that imitates the archivolts and framed in the reinterpretation of a highlighted alfiz in the brick. All the elements of the brick stand are sober and collaborate in the rhythmic arrangement of a harmonious facade and new design, which reinterprets the Italian Renaissance palaces.
