Wreath-laying at the Arc de Triomphe 9/17/2014
Place Charles de Gaulle, Paris
17 September 2014
President Benigno S. Aquino III led the laying of the wreath at the center of the Arc de Triomphe where the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier was located.
President Aquino was given full military honors and the national anthems of France and the Philippines were played during the wreath-laying ceremony.
He was accompanied by State Secretary for Foreign Trade, Tourism and French Nationals Overseas Matthias Fekl and Deputy General for Engagement of the Military Governor of Paris Brigadier General Henry Bazin. Ambassador Ma. Theresa Lazaro and some members of the Cabinet were also present.
The Arc de Triomphe is one of the most famous French monuments and was built in 1806 to honor those who fought and died for France in the French revolutionary and the Napoleonic wars. Underneath its vault lies the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier from World War I.
The monument was designed by Jean Chalgrin and was inspired by the Roman Arch of Titus. It has the names of all French victories and generals inscribed on the inner and at the top of the arch.

WNY 20 de Mayo.MP4
West New York's Mayor celebrates the 20th of May, date of the independence of the island of Cuba from Spain. The guest speaker was Rafael Román Martel, whose message was an homage to Rafael Ibarra Roque, the first Cuban to form a political party in Cuba that wasn't part of the Cuban Communist Party. Mr. Ibarra Roque is serving a 30 year prison term for organizing the first political party in Communist Cuba. The current Cuban Communist system has banned all political currents that deviate from the Communist Dictatorship of the Castro Family. Rafael Román Martel underlines how Cubans outside the island celebrate the 20th of May, never forgetting the ones they left behind, and always focussed on the rebirth of the nation, once Castro's family become a dark passage in Cuba's history. Dr. Felix Roque, a hard working Cuban-American who has been elected mayor of West New York, shares the feelings of all freed Cubans: to have a Cuba freed of Communism. Tthe absence of Congressman Albio Sires is noticeable, who is a native of Cuba, and was present the day before at the swear-in ceremony when Governor Chris Christie, and a handful of local professional politicians were in front of the cameras at the first opportunity. At least 75% of the people present at this event were Cuban ex-political prisoners some of them, like the writer and poet, Jorge Valls, were jailed for 21 years under inhuman conditions. The Cuban-American community thanks Dr. Felix Roque for being present on this very important day for all freedom loving Cubans, and for his words of support for the Cuban Community.
Signing of Agreements 9/17/2014
Elysée Palace, Paris
17 September 2014
President Benigno S. Aquino III and French Republic President Francois Hollande witnessed the signing of four agreements after their bilateral talks at Elysée Palace in Paris.
First is the updated Air Services Agreement that will allow direct flights between Manila and Paris. Philippine Secretary of Transportation and Communications Joseph Emilio Abaya and French Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Development Laurent Fabius signed the agreement that will help boost the tourism and economic trade for both countries. The last direct flight between Paris and Manila was in 2004 by AirFrance before its merging with KLM.
Second is the administrative arrangement between the Chairman of the National Commission for Culture and the Arts of the Republic of the Philippines and the Minister of Culture and Communication of the French Republic on the 2014-2016 Executive Program of the Cultural Cooperation Agreement. It was signed by Presidential Communications Operations Office Secretary Herminio Coloma Jr. and Minister of Culture and Communication Fleur Pellerin. This will provide for visiting artists, heritage restoration and conservation and cultural management, among others.
Another is a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the Development Academy of the Philippines (DAP) and the French National School for Administration or Ecole Nationale d’ Administration (ENA). The MOU that will provide for academic exchanges, particularly in the field of the training of public servants was signed by DAP President Antonio Kalaw and ENA Director Nathalie Loiseau.
The last is a commercial agreement between Globe Telecom-Group Ayala and French telecommunications firm Alcatel-Lucent. Globe Telecom Board of Directors Member Fernando Zobel de Ayala and Alcatel –Lucent Shanghai Bell Company President and CEO Michel Combes signed the agreement that will be for the transition of Globe’s network 3G technology to 4G.

Far-right presidential candidate opponents hold rally
(19 May 2016) European political parties of all stripes are focusing this weekend on Austrian elections that have significance far beyond the small EU nation's borders.
In a scenario that was unthinkable just a few years ago, a right-wing, Eurosceptic candidate is favoured to become president.
Freedom Party candidate Norbert Hofer is leading in polls for Sunday's presidential election runoff against a Greens Party rival running as an independent.
The presidency has been held by either Social Democratic or People's Party nominees since World War II, but those parties' candidates were drubbed and eliminated in the first round.
Such a development would be the latest sign of political upheaval in a country that until recently appeared to be solidly in the pro-European Union camp.
Beyond that, it would reverberate throughout the 27-nation EU zone as new evidence that Europe's right-wing is gaining strength amid a citizenry disillusioned both with national establishment parties and the growingly distrustful of the European Union's ability to solve worries over stagnating economies, joblessness and the migrant crisis.
Many residents believe that confusion and lack of firm decision have led the people to vote to right wing candidate at the first round of elections.
Put forward by the populist anti-EU Freedom Party, the 47-year old Hofer is the front-runner in polls just days before the vote.
Running as an independent, his rival Alexander van der Bellen, a professorial 72-year old Green Party member, has said he would not swear in any Freedom Party politician as chancellor even if that party comes in first in elections due at the latest in two years.
That, too, could create political upheaval and uncertainty unrivalled in post-war Austria.
Most past Austrian elections were pretty well ignored outside the country, but not this time.
Hofer's first round victory is the latest evidence of the growing strength of Eurosceptic, anti-establishment parties across the European Union.
For pro-European politicians, the trend — and the strength of similar parties elsewhere — is a worrying sign of what could happen in the country's next general election, and elections elsewhere within the European Union.
Just days before the elections, an Austrian leftist organisation staged a protest against Freedom party and Hofer.
Several hundred people showed up for the peaceful demo, carrying banners against the right wing party.

Will France React To US Spy Claims Like Germany Reacted?
Leaked documents allegedly show the U.S. tapped French leaders' phones. Similar leaks in 2013 lead to a rough patch between the U.S. and Germany.

Transcript:
Tuesday morning, WikiLeaks published NSA documents containing “top secret” proof that French presidents’ phones were tapped and their conversations were catalogued by the U.S.
In response, current French President François Hollande called a meeting with his country’s defense council, meaning the U.S. and France could be headed for a rough patch.
This feels familiar. In late 2013, similar documents were leaked saying German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s phone, and the phones of other German leaders, had been tapped by the U.S. (Video via BBC)
A phone call from President Obama insisting the U.S. had not tapped the leader’s phone didn’t stop Merkel from launching an investigation into the alleged act of espionage.
Eventually, after German investigators said they found proof of the taps, Merkel ordered the CIA’s top officer — who was in Berlin at the time — to leave the country. Since then, relations between the U.S. and Germany have relaxed.
This new WikiLeak scandal is definitely similar — once again, the U.S. is portrayed as targeting an ally — but this one seems a bit more personal.
The new round of leaks claims information from phone taps was being collected in a document titled “Espionnage Elysée.” The leak says Hollande and the two French presidents before him were being tapped as far back as 2006 and as recently as 2012.
WikiLeaks wrote that Elysée summarized “conversations between French government officials concerning some of the most pressing issues facing France and the international community, including the global financial crisis, the Greek debt crisis, the leadership and future of the European Union” and more.
The Guardian reports former French president Nicolas Sarkozy told journalists the spying was 'unacceptable as a general rule and even more so among allies.'
We'll find out soon enough whether Hollande agrees with him. An NSA spokesperson says the agency will not comment on specific intelligence allegations.
