Catalonia, Spain - Sustainable Tourism - Unravel Travel TV
Catalonia has countless rural tourism options, with something for everyone. You will find Catalonia's most rural spots in a careful selection of very special rural accommodation, where authenticity and friendliness are among the most outstanding features. These rural tourism establishments are classified by ears of wheat, a new category comparable to the stars used for hotels. Each ears-of-wheat category establishes a set of features taking account of the specific characteristics of the building, its rooms, furniture and outdoor spaces, not forgetting the services offered to guests and the activities available in the area. Country homes, farmhouses and agro-tourism establishments in isolated rural areas or small villages. Individual accommodation or accommodation shared with the owners and other guests, allowing us to enjoy a wide range of options in our free time and to discover other ways of life connected with nature and the countryside.
Catalonia offers numerous natural areas that are ideal for leisure, adventure and nature watching activities, all while enjoying its varied landscape. From the highest peaks of the Pyrenees to the most well-hidden coves of the Mediterranean, through the valleys of inland Catalonia and the natural sites of the Ebro delta and the Lands of Lleida, active & nature tourism offers a variety of options within everyone's reach. The mild climate allows to take part in various activities throughout the year, such as hiking on an extensive network of long and short routes, cycling through the Greenways and mountain biking in one of Catalonia's 18 MTB centres. You can also interpret nature, observing flora and fauna, exploring the seabed or walking in one of Catalonia's nature spaces.
The secret of Catalan cuisine is in the quality and uniqueness of the products used, plus the combination of what is offered by the land and the sea. Prades potatoes, wines from the Penedès, the ganxet bean, Siurana olive oil, calçots (a type of tender onion) from Valls, rice from the Ebro Delta, sausage from Vic and the cheeses of Alt Urgell, to name but a few of the Catalan products with certification of origin and agri-food quality. Catalan cuisine is internationally renowned for achieving a difficult balance between innovation and tradition, through the work of chefs like Joan Roca, Carme Ruscalleda, Santi Santamaria and, above all, Ferran Adrià, who from the kitchens of El Bulli restaurant revolutionised the world gastronomy scene. Behind the cuisine of Catalonia today lies the story of a country, a land, a way of being and of doing things. That is why it has been nominated for recognition by UNESCO as part of the Intangible Heritage of Humanity. In addition to its many restaurants of all kinds, Catalonia has a network of public markets where product quality is paramount, and a number of groups of restauranteurs dedicated to promoting the cuisine typical of each area, working with the two terms of territory and product. The biodiversity of Catalonia's landscape also allows you to take part in adventure activities like rafting and hydrospeeding on several rivers, sea kayaking, canyoning, hang gliding, paragliding, ballooning, skydiving, horseback riding and climbing.
The Industrial Revolution in the Iberian Peninsula began in Catalonia, which became one of the most industrially dynamic regions of Europe. The new steam-based industry brought changes to manufacturing processes, transportation systems and even to the way workers lived. These changes can be seen in numerous examples of industrial heritage conserved in Catalonia, located around the Llobregat and Ter rivers. In Catalonia, the modernist art movement is closely associated with the Industrial Revolution. The modernist imprint is evident in factories like the Vapor Vell de Sants in Barcelona (one of the first in Catalonia), the Anís del Mono factory in Badalona, and the Freixenet Cava winery in Sant Sadurní d'Anoia. One of the most characteristic elements of Catalan industrial heritage are its textile factory colonies, located in rural areas by the river. Some examples are Colonia Güell in Santa Coloma de Cervelló, the Viladomiu colonies in Gironella, and the Borgonyà colony in Sant Vicenç de Torelló. These small villages have all the services necessary for the workers, dedicated exclusively to the factory and their families. Throughout Catalonia there are examples of this industrial heritage, and of factories still in operation, in the fields of food, design, cars, wine, etc. More information is available from the Catalan Industrial Tourism Network or from the Museum of Science and Technology in Terrassa.

Concurs de Castells, Tarragona, Catalonia, Spain, Europe
A castell is a human tower built traditionally in festivals at many locations within Catalonia. At these festivals, several colles castelleres (group of people who do these towers) often succeed in building and dismantling a tower's structure. On November 16, 2010, castells were declared by UNESCO to be amongst the Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity. The tradition of building castells originated in the Ball dels Valencians in Valls, near the city of Tarragona, first documented in 1712. Over the course of the 18th century, they spread to other towns and cities in the area, including Vilafranca del Penedès and Tarragona, though it wasn't until the last 50 years that the practice of building Castells began to spread to the rest of Catalonia. While in Catalonia, the Ball dels Valencians began to focus more on the acrobatic nature of building ever taller human towers; their more religious and allegorical origins remain in a similar tradition, the muixeranga, which is performed in the Valencian city of Algemesí.
In 2015 the coordinating body of the Castellers hosted 99 groups such as Castellers de les Gavarres, Castellers de Vilafranca, Jove de Barcelona, and Minyons de Terrassa who were able to construct the best human tower to date 4 de 10, 10 levels of people with four in each level. In Catalan, the word castell means castle. A castell is considered a success when stages of its assembling and disassembling, can be done in complete succession. The assembly is complete once all castellers have climbed into their designated places, and the enxaneta climbs into place at the top and raises one hand with four fingers erect, in a gesture said to symbolize the stripes of the Catalan flag. The enxaneta then climbs down the other side of the castell, after which the remaining levels of castellers descend in highest-to-lowest order until all have reached safety. Aside from the people who climb to form the upper parts of the tower, others are needed to form the pinya, or bottom base of the castell, to sustain its weight. Members of the pinya (most often men) also act as a 'safety net' if the tower structure collapses, cushioning the fall of people from the upper levels. It is not uncommon when not in competitions for other colles to assist in the pinya when a small colla is attempting a specially demanding structure in terms of people needed. The castell is built in two phases. First, the pinya the base of the tower is formed. People forming higher levels of the tower move to a position from which they can easily get to their place in the tower. This is done slowly and carefully, and as subsequent base levels are completed the castellers in the pinya determine if their base is solid enough for construction to continue. Then, when the signal to proceed is given, bands begin to play the traditional Toc de Castells music as a hush comes over spectators of the event. The upper layers of the tower are built as quickly as possible in order to put minimal strain on the lower castellers, who bear most of the weight of the castell. The disassembly of the castell, done amidst the cheering of the crowd, is often the most treacherous stage of the event. There is a form of the Castell, generally referred to as 'rising', in which each successive layer is added from the bottom by lifting the castell into the air, stage by stage. It is held that this form takes even more skill and strength and a great deal of practice. Typically castellers wear white trousers, a black sash, a bandana and a coloured shirt often bearing the team's emblem. A differently coloured shirt indicates which team a participant is in. For instance, Castellers de Barcelona team wear red shirts while Castellers de Vilafranca wear green shirts. The sash (faixa) is the most important part of their outfit, since it supports the lower back and is used by other castellers in the team as a foothold or handhold when climbing up the tower. This tasselled piece of cloth varies in length and width and depends on the casteller's position inside the tower and also on choice. The length of the sash ranges from 1.5 to 12 m, and usually is shorter for those higher up in the castell. Performing castellers usually go barefoot as to minimise injuries upon each other as they climb to their position and also for sensitivity when balancing and to have better feel and hold each other. Accidents are rare during the construction of a castell; however, as in every other crowded cultural event, ambulances are stationed nearby in case a person needs immediate attention. Fatal accidents do occur, such as on July 23, 2006, in Mataró a young casteller fell off the formation of a castell and died. Prior to this, the previous death of a participant was in 1983 in Torredembarra.

Catalonia, Spain Travel Guide: Must see the human towers (Castellers) Catalonia, Spain Travel
Barcelona, Spain Travel Guide: Must see the Human towers, know as (Castellers) If you travel to Barcelona anytime from June to November, here is something you cannot miss. Human towers, known as Castellers, is a tradition that was born in a town called Valls, near the city of Tarragona, in the southern part of Catalonia towards the end of the 18th century. The individual groups (colles) started to compete in sporting events. Thus, not only the building itself was invented, but also the competition.
A castell is considered a success when stages of its assembling and disassembling, can be done in complete succession. Traditionally, the castellers perform their tower building during the main parts of larger festivals. Usually, three colles come together and build their human edifices.
The Castellers de Barcelona kept on refining their technique and the towers became higher and higher. Castle building requires an ample supply of strong, healthy people of different ages and sizes.
The musical element of castle building is more than mere entertainment. When buried deep inside the pinya, it is almost impossible to know what is going on above. Therefore, the musicians, flautists) and percussionist, play at very specific stages and giving clues of the building process, and letting everyone know when the dismantling of the castle has commenced.
