Levoča (Slovakia) Vacation Travel Video Guide
Travel video about destination Levoča in Slovakia.
In the east of Slovakia is Levoča, formerly, Leutschau. In 1317 the city became a free royal town with numerous privileges. Kaschau Gate is the most beautiful of the three well-preserved city gates and the two and a half kilometre city wall once contained fifteen bastions. Levoča eventually became the capital of the region occupied by the Zipser Saxons. The main square contains forty Renaissance-style buildings once owned by the Bourgeoisie and indicate the former wealth of the inhabitants of this city of trade. Jakob Cathedral is regarded as a national treasure. Mighty buttresses support a beautiful net vault, the result, a mediaeval atmosphere. In the half-light, there are various side altars and many splendid murals. In the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries the city was one of Europe’s most important centres of trade due to the trade routes that crossed here between Hungary and Poland. A mighty ring wall, with only two exits, protected the nearby Spišská Kapitula Church. The Romanesque Martin Basilica is the most important building in the complex which was founded in 1198. Of the former thirteen Gothic altars, five remain. Finally, both Levoča and Spišská Kapitula have managed to survive Turkish invasion, various sieges mounted by the troops of the Habsburgs, and numerous deadly plagues!

Vlkolínec, Slovakia / Slovensko / Słowacja
Vlkolínec, Slovakia, is a picturesque village under the administration of the town of Ružomberok. Historically, however, it was a separate village. The first written mention of the village came from 1376 and after 1882 it became part of Ružomberok. Its name is probably derived from the Slovak word vlk, i. e. wolf.
Vlkolínec has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1993, and is one of ten Slovak villages that have been given the status of a folk architecture reservations. This status was granted because the village is an untouched and complex example of folk countryside architecture of the region of the Northern Carpathians.( )

SUMMARY
=======
The UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) has designated 77 World Heritage Sites in nine countries (also called state parties) of Eastern Europe; defined here to mean the former Eastern Bloc countries not including the Baltic Countries (which are in Northern Europe) or former Yugoslavia and Albania (which are in Southern Europe) or the parts of Germany that once comprised East Germany (which are included in Western Europe): Russia, Belarus, Poland, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Ukraine, Moldova, Romania and Bulgaria. Only the European part of Russia is included here; the Asian part is included in Central Asia. Although they have territory in Eastern Europe, the uniquely positioned Caucasian countries of Armenia, Georgia, and Azerbaijan are not included here but in Western Asia, and Kazakhstan is included in Central Asia.Russia is home to the most inscribed sites with 17 sites, two of which are transborder properties. Seven sites are shared between several countries with some of them located partially in Northern or Western Europe: the Curonian Spit (Lithuania and Russia), Caves of Aggtelek Karst and Slovak Karst (Slovakia and Hungary), Primeval Beech Forests of the Carpathians and Other Regions of Europe (Germany, Slovakia, Ukraine, Albania, Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Italy, Romania, Slovenia, and Spain), Belovezhskaya Pushcha / Białowieża Forest (Poland and Belarus), Fertö / Neusiedlersee Cultural Landscape (Austria and Hungary), Muskauer Park / Park Mużakowski (Germany and Poland) and the Struve Geodetic Arc (ten countries in Northern and Eastern Europe). Moldova has only part of the Struve Geodetic Arc transborder site. The first sites from the region were inscribed in 1978, when Kraków's Historic Centre and the Wieliczka Salt Mine, both in Poland were chosen during the list's conception. Each year, UNESCO's World Heritage Committee may inscribe new sites on the list, or delist sites that no longer meet the criteria. Selection is based on ten criteria: six for cultural heritage (i–vi) and four for natural heritage (vii–x). Some sites, designated mixed sites, represent both cultural and natural heritage. In Eastern Europe, there are 69 cultural, 8 natural, and no mixed sites.The World Heritage Committee may also specify that a site is endangered, citing conditions which threaten the very characteristics for which a property was inscribed on the World Heritage List. None of the sites in Eastern Europe is currently listed as endangered; two sites, Wieliczka Salt Mine and the Srebarna Nature Reserve, have formerly been listed as endangered but lost this status subsequently; possible danger listing has been considered by UNESCO in a number of cases.

Slovakia- Little Big Discovery- Pavol Barabáš (English subtitles)
Trailer to documentary movie of Pavol Barabáš. When huge pyramids were growing up towards the sky on one side of the world, the village of Vlkolínec did not yet exist, the same as the wooden churches crouched below the Carpathians, the large Spiš Castle, the historical centre of Bardejov or charming Banská Štiavnica. And yet, they all have something in common in that they are at present part of the Unesco World Cultural Heritage List. They all belong among the most amazing monuments that mankind has created during its existence on Earth.

Spiss Castle & Levoca Town - UNESCO World Heritage Site
The UNESCO World Heritage site of Spiss Castle (Spissky Hrad) is an enormous ruined castle in central Slovakia, dating from the 12th century and a former residence of the Hungarian kings. There are several distinct phases of buildings - Romanesque, Gothic and Renaissance, though sadly much of the detail has been lost in the fires which destroyed the site. Nearby Levoca town is also fantastic, with a great medieval town square and some beautiful Renaissance buildings.
