Devils Tower Tower Trail
The loop trail is 1.3 miles and paved. There are a few elevation changes; but, overall an easy hike. The views are great, and the columns of the tower are huge. You will see a few on the ground during the hike.
Devils Tower, Wyoming Virtual Hike - Episode 1 Hike With Mike
I am starting this #hikewithmike series to help those that would like to see what they are getting into before going. Also I want to help others that can't go to a hiking location due to physical or financial limitations. So enjoy the journey with me as I try to provide 4k video raw and uncut!
This is a hike around the base of Devils Tower National Monument in Wyoming. This location grew in popularity from the release of the 1977 movie Close Encounters of the Third Kind.
The magma which formed Devils Tower cooled and crystallized into a rock type known as phonolite porphyry. It is a light to dark-gray or greenish-gray igneous rock with conspicuous crystals of white feldspar. Hot molten magma is less dense and occupies more volume than cool hardened rock.
The trail at the bottom of Devils tower is relatively flat and easy. It's nicely paved and a 1.3 mile (2km) loop around the whole tower providing beautiful views at different angles!
Video was filmed with a gopro hero 4 black in 4k on a Feiyu G4 stabalizer hand held.

Hiking Around Devils Tower National Monument & Exploring Gillette Wyoming
On this Airstream Life vLog, we take a 2-hour drive from Buffalo to Devils Tower National Monument. This is the 1st National Monument in the USA. It is impressive to see in person. Why is it called Devi's Tower? It was a misinterpretation of the Native American name which was Bear's Tower (they heard Bad God's Tower). The legend has it two girls were running away from 2 giant bears. They got on top of a rock and prayed to the Creator to help them. The rock then raised up into the air with the two bears clawing at it trying to get up. This created the tower!
After seeing the tower and the prairie dog colony we head back to Gillette Wyoming where we have some delicious Mexican food for lunch and check out the town.

The Spectacular Draw of Devils Tower National Monument
In the wilderness of Wyoming, there's a magnificent pillar of ancient lava so unique, that even geologists are at odds on exactly how it was formed.

Sacred Devil's Tower - Wyoming Travel
See the Devil's Tower in Wyoming.
The United States is full of natural wonders. Among them is the Devil's Tower, which resides in Wyoming.
Set in the Black Hills, it is essentially a rock monument which stems from a rolling prairie.
The tower is thought to be sacred to tribes who frequent the area. There are hundreds of depressions or lines in the side of Devil's Tower which make it a perfect crack climbing area.
There is also a 1.3 mile paved trail that circles the tower, allowing visitors to experience the true size.
It stands more than 1,200 feet above the surrounding land and the summit rises over 5,000 feet above sea level.
The boundary of Devil's Tower encloses more than 1,300 acres.
In 1906, the beautiful site was declared a United States National Monument by President Theodore Roosevelt.
Geologists aren't quite sure how it came about; however some believe the tower is a volcanic plug or the neck of an extinct volcano.
The rock at the monument is estimated to be 40 million years old.
Hiking Around Devil's Tower
(A little correction in my narrative : Terry Garr played the wife of the man haunted by his UFO sighting - Richard Dreyfuss. The mother of the little boy who was abducted into the spaceship was played by Melinda Dillon.)
Devil's Tower, WY is the very first declared national monument in the US - by Pres Theodore Roosevelt in 1906.
I didn't encounter any ET's or UFOs, but the gift shop has a whole lot of movie souvenirs. The trail circling the Tower is 1.3 miles long. My hike was early enough on a Sunday morning to avoid the large crowds, however the low sun also made the bright glare unavoidable. This is a very popular tourist destination even though it is 35 miles from I-90. At 10:00 AM the large parking lot was full!

Special Update from the Devil's Tower in Wyoming
Lots of winter weather in Ontario means another update is needed. Some logging on D101B will mean a detour for a short time. Enjoy a ride around Trail 65.
Devils Tower 2014 - Day Hike with the Family
Located right next to Hulett, Wyoming is the enigmatic Devils Tower jetting up from the black hills. It had been a couple years since we visited so we went on a Sunday drive...and brought the camera. LOL.
Today we decided to just hike the Tower Trail as I'm still recovering from some injuries sustained from my backpacking trip on the French Creek. Otherwise, there is an awesome 1.3 mile trail the Red Beds trail that takes you out on a wider perimeter view of this beautiful rock formation. Watch out for snakes. No pets allowed on this trail so unfortunately Phoebe had to stay home.
Along the way we saw prairie dogs, deer, long horn cattle and a buffalo. Once we got to the trail it was a relatively easy hike around the tower on a paved walk way. Please remember that this is a sacred place to the local Native Americans so please stay on trail and don't disturb prayer bundles.
Climbing is allowed. As always we of course spotted about 6 people climbing the Tower and they were about half way up when we arrived.
If your planning on visiting Wyoming or the black hills area don't forget to check out Devils Tower. With plenty of facilities, picnic areas, campground a Visitor Center and Amphitheater, there's plenty to see and do when you're done hiking the trails. Also, check out the small town nearby for some great ice cream.

Devils Tower, Wyoming - Devils Tower National Monument - Full Tour (2019)
Devils Tower (also known as Bear Lodge Butte) is a butte, possibly laccolithic, composed of igneous rock in the Bear Lodge Ranger District of the Black Hills, near Hulett and Sundance in Crook County, northeastern Wyoming, above the Belle Fourche River. It rises 1,267 feet (386 m) above the Belle Fourche River, standing 867 feet (265 m) from summit to base. The summit is 5,112 feet (1,559 m) above sea level.
Devils Tower was the first United States National Monument, established on September 24, 1906, by President Theodore Roosevelt. The monument's boundary encloses an area of 1,347 acres (545 ha).
In recent years, about 1% of the monument's 400,000 annual visitors climbed Devils Tower, mostly using traditional climbing techniques.
The 1977 movie Close Encounters of the Third Kind used the formation as a plot element and as the location of its climactic scenes. Its release was the cause of a large increase in visitors and climbers to the monument.
Similarly, the 2011 movie Paul, used the formation at the film's climax as an homage to Close Encounters of the Third Kind.
The Devils Tower National Monument in Wyoming, USA

Devils Tower National Monument, Wyoming - RV Living
We make a little detour into Wyoming to visit the Devils Tower National Monument. With plans to stay in the first-come-first-served Belle Fourche Campground, we get a little nervous waiting in line to get into the park with multiple RVs ahead of us. Once in and settled, we start exploring Devils Tower, hiking the Red Beds Trail to the Tower Trail the circles the base of the tower. One of the parks slogans is Half the Park is after dark, so we make a point to drive to an overlook for sunset, but the stormy Wyoming skies have a different idea. We enjoy learning about the mysterious geological history of Devils Tower and share an interesting story before moving on to our next adventure!
