Mendicant
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The term mendicant (from Latin: mendicans, begging) refers to begging or relying on charitable donations, and is most widely used for religious followers or ascetics who rely exclusively on charity to survive.
In principle, mendicant orders or followers do not own property, either individually or collectively, and have taken a vow of poverty, in order that all their time and energy could be expended on practising or preaching their religion or way of life and serving the poor.
Many religious orders adhere to a mendicant way of life, including the Catholic mendicant orders, Hindu ascetics, some dervishes of Sufi Islam, and the monastic orders of Jainism and Buddhism. In the Catholic Church, followers of Saint Francis of Assisi and Saint Dominic became known as mendicants, as they would beg for food while they preached to the villages.
While mendicants are the original type of monks in Buddhism and have a long history in Indian Hinduism and the countries which adapted Indian religious traditions, they didn't become widespread in Christianity until the High Middle Ages. The Way of a Pilgrim depicts the life of an Eastern Christian mendicant.
Ginza
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Ginza (銀座) is a district of Chūō, Tokyo, located south of Yaesu and Kyōbashi, west of Tsukiji, east of Yūrakuchō and Uchisaiwaichō, and north of Shinbashi.
It is known as an upscale area of Tokyo with numerous department stores, boutiques, restaurants and coffeehouses. Ginza is recognized as one of the most luxurious shopping districts in the world. Many upscale fashion clothing flagship stores are located here, being also recognized as having the highest concentration of western shops in Tokyo. Prominent are Chanel, Dior, Gucci, and Louis Vuitton.
Flagship electronic retail stores like the Sony showroom and the Apple Store are also here.
History
Ginza is named after the silver-coin mint established there in 1612 during the Edo period.
After the Tsukiji area burnt to the ground in 1872, the Meiji government designated the Ginza area as model of modernisation. The government planned the construction of fireproof brick buildings, and larger, better streets connecting the Shimbashi Station and the foreign concession in Tsukiji, as well as to important government buildings. Designs for the area were provided by the Irish-born architect Thomas Waters; the Bureau of Construction of the Ministry of Finance was in charge of construction. In the following year, a Western-style shopping promenade on the street from the Shinbashi bridge to the Kyōbashi bridge in the southwestern part of Chūō with two- and three-story Georgian brick buildings was completed.
Bricktown buildings were initially offered for sale, later they were leased, but the high rent meant that many remained unoccupied. Nevertheless, the area flourished as a symbol of civilisation and enlightenment, thanks to the presence of newspapers and magazine companies, who led the trends of the day. The area was also known for its window displays, an example of modern marketing techniques.
Most of these European-style buildings disappeared, but some older buildings still remain, most famously the Wakō building with the now-iconic Hattori Clock Tower. The building and clock tower were originally built by Kintarō Hattori, the founder of Seiko.
Its recent history has seen it as a promiment outpost of western luxury shops. Ginza is a popular destination on weekends, when the main north-south artery is closed to traffic. The traffic blockade began in the 1960s under governor Ryokichi Minobe.
Meeting the descendants of Japan's 'hidden Christians'
As Pope Francis wraps up a four-day visit to Japan, we meet some of the country's few Christians. There are some 400,000 of them in the archipelago, making up less than 0.5 percent of the population. Christianity has a troubled history in Japan as it was banned for several centuries. Some early converts refused to abandon their faith and practiced it in secret. Our team in Nagasaki meets some of the descendants of Japan's earliest Christians.

Bonenkai in Shimabara, Japan
This was my high schools bonenkai held in Shimabara. The cost was around ¥5000, or ¥2500 if you part of the teacher union, and was optional to attend. This one was mainly seafood and I ate so much the alcohol had no affect on me :P
Also, I won the second round of bingo and walked away with a ¥2000 gift certificate to Tsutaya (a Japanese bookstore place).
Wikipedia: A bōnenkai (忘年会 literally forget the year gathering?) is a Japanese drinking party that takes place at the end of the year, and is generally held among groups of co-workers or friends. The purpose of the party, as its name implies, is to forget the woes and troubles of the past year, and hopefully look to the new year, usually by consumption of large amounts of alcohol. A bōnenkai does not take place on any specific day, but they are usually held in December.
I felt strange recording this, so sorry about the cuts and shaky video.

Tsuwano Japan's most beautiful Town with a hidden inari shrine
#Japan #rural #travel
Tsuwano is a town located in Shimane Prefecture, Japan. Tsuwano is also know as Little Kyoto of San-In.
Famous for its beautiful traditional Japanese streets and fish that live in the side water gutters. Unusually, Tsuwano is somewhat home to two Catholic churches. The Catholic church in Tsuwano itself is dedicated to Saint Francis Xavier, who visited Japan as a missionary in 1549–50,
In this video I explore the incredibly beautiful Tsuwano town, check out it's famous fishy residents, explore an unusual Catholic church and find an extraordinary set of Tori steps that led me to one of the best shrines I've ever explored.

About 100 Japanese people gathered in a church western city of Toyama on Saturday to attend a Catholic mass to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the assassination of US President John F. Kennedy. Duration: 01:51
Japanese Catholics delighted by Pope's visit
(24 Nov 2019) Pope Francis brought his peace message to Nagasaki and Hiroshima on his first full day in Japan, paying homage to the victims of the U.S. atomic bombings and demanding an end to the stockpiling and use of nuclear weapons.
Shortly after arriving in Nagasaki, he laid a wreath in heavy rain at an outdoor memorial to bombing victims at ground zero.
Japanese Catholics and others braved the rain in plastic raincoats, some queued up for hours to secure a spot for Francis’ Mass in the baseball stadium due later.
