The trabucco is an old fishing machine typical of the coast of Abruzzi region and also in the coast of Gargano, where it is protected as historical monuments by the homonym National Park. Spread along the coast of southern Adriatic especially in the Italian provinces of Chieti, Campobasso, and Foggia and also in some parts of the coast of southern Tyrrhenian Sea. A trabucco is a massive construction built from wood, which consists of a platform anchored to the rock by large logs of Aleppo pine, jutting out into the sea, from where two (or more) long arms called antennae stretch out suspended some feet above the water and supporting a huge, narrow-meshed, net (called trabocchetto).
The morphology of the Gargano coast and of Abruzzo determined the presence of two different types of trabucco: the Garganic trabucco is usually anchored to a rocky platform, longitudinally extended to the coastline, from which the antennae depart.
The variant of Abruzzo and Molise, also called bilancia, often insists on shallower coasts and therefore is characterized by the presence of a platform, transversal to the coast, which is connected by a tight bridge made of wooden boards. A bilancia has just one winch, often electrically operating, even when the sea is perfectly calm. Abruzzo bilancia has also a net much smaller than that of Gargano trabucco, another feature that differentiates the two types is the length and number of antennae, more extensive Gargano (also double that of Abruzzo and Molise) in Termoli balances were more than two antennae, Gargano always two or more. According with some historians of Apulia, the trabuccco was invented in the region imported from Phoenicians. The earliest documented existence dates back to 18th century, during which Gargano fishermen, during that period sparsely populated, devised an ingenious technique of fishing which wasn't subject to weather conditions in the area. Trabucchi were built in the most prominent promontories jutting nets out to sea through a system of monumental wooden arms: a trabucco allows to fish without having to be submitted to sea conditions using the morphology of Gargano rocky coast. The trabucco is built with traditional wood Aleppo pine -the typical pine of Gargano and common throughout the South-Western Adriatic- because this material is virtually limitless modeled, elastic, weatherproof and resistant to salt. Some trabucchi have been rebuilt in recent years, thanks to public funds. However, since they lost their economic function in the past centuries when they were the main economical source of entire families of fishermen, trabucchi rose into the role of cultural and architectural symbols and tourist attraction. The fishing technique, quite efficacious, is on sight. It consists of intercepting, with wide nets, the flows of fish moving along the ravines of the coast. Trabucchi are located where the sea is deep enough (at least 6 meters), and are built on rocky peaks generally oriented southeast or north in order to exploit the favorable marine current. The net is lowered into the water through a complex system of winches and, likewise, promptly pulled up to retrieve its catch. At least two men are entrusted with the tough task of operating the winches that maneuver the giant net. Small trabucchi of Abruzzo and Molise Coast are often electrically powered. The trabucco is managed at least by four fishermen called trabuccolanti who share the duties of watching the fish and maneuvering.

On Abruzzo's southern coast, the hilltop town of Vasto has an atmospheric medieval quarter and superb sea views. Much of the centro storico (historic centre) dates from the 15th century, a period in which the city was known as 'the Athens of the Abruzzi'; it's also distinguished as the birthplace of the poet Gabriele Rossetti. Two kilometres downhill is the blowzy resort of Vasto Marina, a strip of hotels, restaurants and campgrounds fronting a long sandy beach. About 5km north of town along the coast is the beautiful Spiaggia di Punta Penna and the Riserva Naturale di Punta Aderci.
In summer the action is on the beach at Vasto Marina. In the old town, interest revolves around the small historic centre, with its landmark Castello Caldoresco, located on Piazza Rossetti, and the low-key Romanesque Cattedrale di San Giuseppe. The Renaissance Palazzo d'Avalos hosts four museums, including the Museo Archeologico. The first thing you will appreciate on arriving in Vasto are the beautiful panoramic views over the Adriatic sea, over the lovely golden beaches and towards the Punta della Penne harbour and lighthouse.
Above the sea, on a hillside, Vasto has a charming medieval old centre whose centre is the marvellous Piazza Rossetti with the impressive Caldoresco Castle. The original parts of the castle date back to the 14th and 15th centuries. The Palazzo d'Avalos is another key sight. You can visit the palace as it is now home to the Museo Civico Archaeologica. Be sure to also visit its pretty Neapolitan-style garden. Not far away is the Cattedrale di San Giuseppe which has a simple Romanesque facade. The rest is newer as it was rebuilt following destruction during a Turkish raid in the 16th century.
Wandering through the narrow alleyways is a pleasure (and offers some relief from the hot sun) and reveals many churches and mansions and also various Roman excavations. After exploring the old centre head for the beach. It is about a 15 to 20 minutes walk downhill from the ancient centre of Vasto and is a welcome spot to cool off in the gorgeous turquoise waters of the Adriatic Sea.
On the coast the Vasto Marina is a popular holiday destination and has lots of hotels and camp sites along the edge of the beach. This is a nice spot to enjoy lunch or to have the almost obligatory afternoon ice-cream. Whilst thronging with people in July and August the marina and beaches are fairly deserted outside of the main season.
Further along the coast is the promontory of the 'Punta d'Erca also known as the Punta Aderci, a beautiful, unspoilt area of rocky coastline popular with divers. The area is a protected nature reserve. You can see the wonderful 'trabocchi' here. These are traditional fishing platforms used for fish and prawn fishing along the coast. Outside of the main season you can enjoy the coastline and trabocchi and barely see another person.
The old part of the town (centro storico) features a number of buildings and churches dating from the 12th-18th centuries, including:
Vasto Cathedral (Cattedrale di San Giuseppe)
Church of Santa Maria Maggiore (it), the largest and oldest (mentioned in a document as early as 1195) church in the town, with a quite tall bell tower. Damaged by the Turks in 1566, and by a fire in 1645, it received a thorough restructuring in 1735 in which it got the current shape. It hosts one of alleged Jesus' crown of thorns (Sacra Spina).

PUNTA ADERCI (Vasto), E' LA TERZA SPIAGGIA PIU' BELLA D'ITALIA.
Ci troviamo a Punta Aderci, una riserva naturale regionale, nei pressi di Vasto (CH) che comprende tutta una serie di spiagge, di tipo sabbioso e ciottoloso circondate da arbusti tipici della macchia mediterranea oltre che un bellissimo trabocco.
La zona è stata eletta terza spiaggia più bella d'Italia da un sondaggio web di Lega ambiente e l'area ha, al suo interno, tre spiagge con caratteristiche e peculiarità differenti.
PUNTA PENNA, è la spiaggia più a sud, è facimente raggiungibile in auto, più sabbiosa che ciottolosa. Vista la comodità logistica questa spiagge è però anche quella più affollata e inoltre, la vista sul porto di Vasto (oltre alla vicinanza psicologica della zona industriale), secondo me, deturpa tantissimo l'insieme mentre nelle altre spiagge il porto non è visibile in quanto nascosto dal promontorio.
Proprio a ridosso del trabocco, sotto il promontorio di PUNTA ADERCI, c'è un'altra piccola spiaggia, che si raggiunge da una strada bianca dal porto.
A Punta Aderci c'è una vista spettacolare si vede il trabocco e la spiaggia di Mottagrossa.
MONTEGROSSA, è la terza spiaggia, dove siamo andate, è quella più estesa e quella più a nord.
Questa è un po' più difficile da raggiungere delle altre.
Come si raggiunge la spiaggia di Mottagrossa?
ITINERARIO Spiaggia Mottagrossa - Punta Aderci
Dall'uscita autostradale della A14/E55 di Vasto nord si gira a destra e poi subito a 200 metri a destra in direzione SS16 sud (ora li stanno costruendo una rotonda quindi troverete una rotonda a breve). Da li percorrete circa 2Km e raggiungete la successiva rotonda in cui prendete la terza uscita seguendo il cartello Casa Circodariale. A questo punto dopo meno di un Km trovate sulla destra una strada bianca con un cartello Villa Marianna. Sempre dritto supererete la ferrovia adriatica e, dopo un po' arriverete al mare.
Non vi aspettate comodità. E' tutta spiaggia libera, non ci sono chalet o altro.
Ma sarete circondati da un mare stupendo e da una natura incontaminata.
Date un'occhiata a tutte le altre foto che ho fatto durante la giornata per farvi un'idea dei luoghi incantati che abbiamo visto.
