Endicott Arm Fjord & Dawes Glacier Alaska Tour via Cruise Ship (4K)
We visited the Endicott Arm Fjord & the Dawes Glacier during our 2017 June Alaska cruise. We were supposed to go to the Tracy Arm Fjord and see the Sawyer Glacier instead, but there were still too much ice so the captain of our cruise ship made the decision to visit Endicott instead. It was super-scenic, serene and majestic with numerous water falls, ice chunks in the water plus snow-peaked mountains. The Dawes glacier at the end of the fjord was quite amazing itself, and we were able to capture it calving several times.
It is the beauty of nature such as this that makes Alaska cruises so special. Our cruise ship, the Holland America Amsterdam, actually passed by the Carnival Legend in the Endicott Arm- you can see our video of the encounter here:

Tracy Arm Fjord and Sawyer Glacier - Alaska's Inside Passage
Tracy Arm is a beautiful, 30-mile-long glacier-carved fjord that stretch inland from Holkham Bay along Stephens Passage, part of Alaska's Inside Passage, to North and South Sawyer Glaciers. Some cruise ships sail into Tracy Arm as part of their tours. Other visitors come down here on day trip excursions out of Juneau, 45 miles to the north.
The highlight is South Sawyer Glacier, especially on a sunny day when the sunlight really brings out the blue in the ice.
The Photos (in order)
A14A0616 - The fresh water of Tracy Arm, milky with fine stone powder from glacial run-off, meets the clear, more dense salt water of Holkham Bay, marking the start of Tracy Arm
A14A0671 - Sailing through Tracy Arm
A14A0682 - This side channel of the fjord leads to North Sawyer Glacier; my old 2003 map shows that channel filled with the glacier; but the glacier has retreated, leaving bare rock behind
A14A0688 - South Sawyer Glacier comes into view; larger ships like the one in the photo have to stop here; my smaller ship was able to sail past the island for a much closer look; a pair of kayakers had set up camp on that island
A14A0721 - Spectacular South Sawyer Glacier marks the end of Tracy Arm; in front of the glacier is a tour boat that came down from Juneau; the tour boat is about the size of a small two-story house; the face of the glacier is at least 10 stories tall
A14A0711 - There were a number of smaller chunks of ice breaking off the front of the glacier; then a large 10-story chunk slumped off the face of the glacier and into the sea; this is the before shot
A14A0712 - The left half of that large chunk of glacier in the middle is falling into Tracy Arm
A14A0713 - And that half is gone; all that is left is the splash
