Greek Alps: Discover Eurytania Region / Karpenisi, Kremasta Lake, Agrafa
Karpenisi is a town in central Greece. It is the capital of the regional unit of Evrytania. Karpenisi is situated in the valley of the river Karpenisiotis (Καρπενησιώτης), a tributary of the Megdovas, in the southern part of the Pindus Mountains. Mount Tymfristos (2,315 m elevation) lies directly to the north of the town. Karpenisi has a ski resort and is a popular destination, especially during winter. It is called Switzerland of Greece for the resemblance with the mountainous country and its beauty, atypical for a Mediterranean place.
Antiquity
According to Homer, the first known inhabitants of northern Evrytania were the Dolopes, who took part in the campaign against Troy around 1100 BC. The ancient capital of the area was Oechalia, situated close to the city of Karpenisi. Ancient Evrytanians especially honored Artemis, the goddess of hunting and Odysseus for his ability to be cunning and inventive.
During the Byzantine times, the people of Evritania had the rare privileges of self-government and tax exemption. For this reason the northern part of the district was also called Agrafa (unwritten), because the residents were not listed in the Imperial tax registers.
Skiing at Velouhi, après-ski in Karpenisi, touring the monuments, and a majestic landscape
Karpenisi has everything: winter sports, modern comforts, entertainment, magnificent mountains, rushing rivers, beautiful gorges, picturesque villages and historic monasteries. On the slopes of the ski resort in Velouhi, families and friends ski, snowboard and play games in the snow. In the monastery of Panagia Prousiotissa, believers bow to the miraculous icon.
In Koryschades, you’ll walk through alleys admiring the traditional architecture, and in Karpenisi you’ll enjoy lively evenings with generous helpings of food and entertainment. In the traditional guest houses, the warm atmosphere is inviting. In the tavernas, you’ll enjoy the tantalising flavours of the local cooking, whose aromas fill the cosy environs, warmed by the flickering fireplaces. Karpenisi and its surrounding villages are undoubtedly an idyllic winter holiday destination. The magic is captivating.
Velouhi: a quality ski resort
In Central Greece, the Velouhi plateau is home to one of the largest and most challenging ski resorts in Greece. Spread over 5,500 sq m, at an altitude of 1,850 to 2,000 metres, it boasts 11 slopes and has been operating since 1974. Of these, there is one black trail for experienced skiers and snowboarders. Enjoy playing in the snow with family and friends, while you take in the incredible view.
Karpenisi town: welcoming and historic
A vibrant town that stays lively all year round, Karpenisi has great hotels, tavernas, shops and sights. Take a walk around the square to see the monuments, the statues of Antonis Katsantonis and Markos Botsaris (heroes of the 1821 Greek Revolution), the church of Agia Triada, the plane trees and icy mountain-water spring. On the main road, Zinopoulou, you’ll find coffee shops, bars, boutiques and shops selling everything you need, from skis to local products.
Traditional Koryschades
This picturesque traditional village will surpass all your expectations. Walk back in time, through this historic settlement’s stone streets, with their well-preserved old homes. In the main square you’ll see the church of Agios Athanasios, built in 1865, and the historic public school from 1901, which now houses the fascinating Museum of National Resistance. Staying at one of the beautiful traditional guest houses at this beloved winter destination is a special experience.
The Karpenisi Ski Centre eight miles out of town on Mount Velouchi, perched nearly 6,000 feet above sea level at a spot called Diavolotopos – literally, Devil's place. This centre has ten pistes, seven ski lifts, the requisite number of restaurants and first aid facilities, and a stunning view of a good part of the central Greek mountain tops. Karpenisi has become an important ski and outdoor sports center.

Hellenistic painting and frescoes - Macedonian tomb at Agios Athanasios
Hellenistic painting and frescos: the Macedonian tomb of Agios Athanasios, unearthed near the Thessaloniki metropolitan area, dated to the last years of the 4th century BC, shortly after the death of Alexander the Great.
Along the east gradient of the tumulus are two non-pillaged cist graves; their investigation offers interesting evidence on the social rank of the defunct and on the burial habits of the time. At the centre of the enormous tumulus, 12m down its peak, is the small single-chambered Macedonian tomb, robbed but richly decorated with murals preserved in excellent condition featuring surprising colours. This exceptional monument is dated to the last quarter of the fourth century BC.
The face of the tomb is entirely painted. The ornate triangle of the pediment presents mythical griffons with all-golden wings, followed by dark-blue triglyphs and white metopes, while the narrow frieze above the entrance narrates a symposium scene, so familiar in literature or on painted vases, yet for the first time so lively represented before the eyes of the visitors. At the centre, six wreathed symposium participants lying languidly on anaklintra (couches) enjoy delicious dishes, guitar and diaulos music performed by young women, while men on foot and on horseback make haste to join them. Some hoplites in Macedonian costume, relaxing on their spears and the characteristic resplendent bucklers, are watching calmly. A moving representation depicts two full-length young men wrapped in long chlamyses standing sorrowful next to the tomb's entrance, eternal guards of their dead fellow warrior. This is undoubtedly the grave of a renowned Macedonian military, to judge from the remains of real armour found in the burial chamber which was nearly destroyed by antiquity looters.
