Preveza, Greece - Epirus
Preveza is a port town on the Ionian sea, part of the region of Epirus. It is known for Ancient Nicopolis, the Acheron River and the Necromanteion (Oracle of the Dead). During summer months, the port of Preveza is full of boats and yachts, while cafes are filled with people. In the picturesque streets of Preveza there are nineteenth century mansions with their remarkable architecture along with houses with insular features. The cobbled alley of Seitan Bazaar with its traditional ouzeri is a famous area in the town. Preveza is adorned with significant Christian temples, such as the churches of Agios Nikolaos and Agios Athanasios, as well as the metropolitan temple of Agios Charalambos with its exceptional paintings and the wooden carved gold-plated iconostasis. Adjacent to the church is the venetian Clock Tower, a landmark of the city, built in 1752. Greek taverns, cafes, and narrow streets portray the typical Mediterranean appearance that you would expect from an old town. The large quay with the beautiful neoclassical buildings creates the perfect setting for relaxing walks. With the combination of the nature and vegetation and the traditional taverns, a very idyllic environment is created. There are many beautiful beaches and other natural sites that one can enjoy while visiting Preveza Prefecture.

Skyros, Greece - Skyros Town - AtlasVisual
Skyros Video Map:
Skyros Town, or Chora, is a spectacular island capital and harbor. White houses are stacked up into the hillside overlooking a picturesque harbor. Winding roads and alleys curve through the town, leading to the center square, Pano Piatsa (Upper Square). There is a castle perched atop the mountain behind the town. A Byzantine fortress and Venetian architecture round out the beauty of the town. The center of the village has many hotels and places to stay, restaurants, bars and cafes. Other places to see in Skyros Town: Agia Triada church; the Monastery of Agios Georgios; the Statue of Immortal Poetry in commemoration of Rupert Brooke, the English poet who died on the island; the 17th century Agios Athanasios church; and Agios Konstantinos church. Also worth seeing: The Folklore Museum and Archaeological Museum. The view from the top of the hill of Skyros Town is breathtaking -- green land, blue sea and the town stretched out below you.

Fthiotida - Main Land - Greece
According to mythology the land of Fthiotida is the birthplace of the Greek civilization. This is where Defkalionas and Pyrra sought refuge after the great flood and gave birth to Protogenia, Amfiktyona and Ellina. This is where the first Amfiktionia was founded and united the prehistoric tribes that later formed the Greek nation. This is where Hercules was worshiped after his triumphs; it is the birthplace of Achilles and many other heroes from Homers Iliad.
This is where Leonidas and his 300 Spartians along with the Thespians and other Greeks fought against the Persians at the Gate of Thermopylae (Hot Gates) in 480BC. Their victory against the unbeaten enemy from this strategic point was sabotaged by Efialtis betrayal leading to their death.
Fthiotida has since then known many battles, such as the battle of Spercheios where Tsar Samuil met the Byzantine army led by Nikephoros Ouranos, the commander of all Balkan territories in the Byzantine Empire. The armies camped on either side of the river and remained there for several days due to the due to the heavy rainfalls. The Tsar was convinced the Byzantines could not cross the swollen river but Nikeforos Ouranos led his army across during the night and attacked. The Tsar and his son managed to escape by hiding among the dead bodies but according to the legend his wounded arm healed during the long journey home at an angle of 140o.
The third great battled took place south of Alamana in Poria during the first year of the Greek Revolution in 1821 against the Turks. Greece had been under Turkish occupation for 400 years and their army of 8000 men led by Omer Vryonis was heading to Moria when they were intercepted by the Athanasios Diakos, Panourgias Panourgias and Yiannis Dyovouniotis with their bands of Armatoloi (a total of perhaps 1,500 men). It was an uneven battle but the Armatoloi faced the enemy on various battlefields only to be defeated in Alamana. Athanasios Diakos was one of the last to fall. He was captured and led to the Turkish headquarters where he refused Vryonis offer to join their side. Vryonis then ordered be impaled on a spit. The fourth great battle of Fthitida belongs to Velouhiotis, Zervas, their men and the British allies. During WWII (24th Nov.1942) by the Forgopotamos bridge the enemy was again close and maybe stronger than in the past.
The German field marshal Erwin Rommel was waiting for war supplies in N. Africa with the intention of transferring them through Greece by rail. The British allies cooperated with the men of Aris Velouhiotis and Napoleon Zervas to stop the arms from reaching the German army. The Greek army blew of the bridge giving the allies time to prepare their attack against the German army.

Visit Macedonia - Polyapton (subtitles)
Visit Macedonia - Polyapton (subtitles)
Polyapton is part of Macedonia: from fragments to pixels, a special exhibition of prototypical interactive systems with subjects drawn from ancient Macedonia, the result of a collaboration between the Archaeological Museum of Thessaloniki (AMTh) and the Institute of Computer Science of the Foundation for Research and Technology -- Hellas (ICS-FORTH), hosted by the AMTh.
Polyapton is a very large interactive screen that can be used by several visitors who wish to explore multifaceted information on a subject at the same time.
Polyapton presents one of the best-preserved ancient Greek paintings. It is a wall painting depicting a symposium, from the Macedonian tomb of Agios Athanasios near Thessaloniki. The tomb is not open to visitors, who have here a rare opportunity to enjoy the painting in its full glory.
The system's special multi-touch screen recognizes the touch of many fingers or hands, but also specific objects, at the same time. Visitors can 'scroll' across the painting and focus on points of interest with multimedia information by touching them, zoom in on details with the use of a paper magnifying lens, while an infrared torch displays a modern rendition of the painting.

Macedonia today is a geographical region of Greece, and the largest of the Greek territory.
It constitutes most of the geographic and historical region of ancient Macedon, a Greek kingdom ruled by the Argeads whose most celebrated members were Alexander the Great and his father Philip II.
In 336 B.C., Alexander the Great became the leader of the Greek kingdom of Macedonia. By the time he died 13 years later, Alexander had built an empire that stretched from Greece all the way to India. That brief but thorough empire-building campaign changed the world: It spread Greek ideas and culture from the Eastern Mediterranean to Asia. Historians call this era the Hellenistic period.
The name Macedonia was later applied to identify various administrative areas in the Roman and Byzantine Empires with widely differing borders.
