TRAIN PARK in Kalamata!
Trains, activities, and a unique spot to chill at the Kalamata Municipal Railway Park.
Close to Kalamata's port, you'll find the Kalamata Municipal Railway Park. Once home to a coal cellar and the Kalamata-Limin station, the area is now a unique green space within the city, with locomotives, carriages, and wagons on display.
However the park is more than just these wonderful trains. With basketball, volleyball, fitness equipment, playgrounds, and a cafe, the park is a unique recreation spot and a lovely place to just chill.

Greece, Stoupa walk along beach May 2016 part 1
Filmed in Stoupa May 2016.
Posted a few videos just so anyone looking to go to Stoupa for first time can get a feel of where all the hotels & apartments are located in relation to beach. Most of you viewing will have been To Stoupa several times before so it will be boring!!!
You will find the sea front has hardly changed at all in 10 years or so, maybe 2 tavernas have changed hands and the butcher doesn't have his pig roast place now. There are a number of holiday appartments been built towards the main road, again over the last 10 years, but nothing over 2 floors high in keeping with the rest of Stoupa. Kalamata airport now has UK flights on Tuesdays. Thursdays, Saturday and Sunday rather than just Sundays. A new road link between Kalamata Airport & the new Athens to Kalamata highway opened in March 2017 so the transfer from the airport goes around Kalamata cutting about 20 minutes off the transfer time but you still get the same stunning views as you pass through the Taygetos Mountains.
Katafygi Selinitsas 23/03/2013 - Part 1 of 4
Drakos-Selinitsa-System
At the western shores of Messinian Mani peninsula, in south Greece, 49km to south-east of Kalamata city and south of Agios Dimitrios village, an impressive, composite karstic system is developed below and above sea-level (Papadopoulou, 1999). It comprises ''Selinitsa'' Cave and ''Drakos'' underground river, which are located on the shoreline and in + 8m a.s.l. and -10m, respectively. This karstic system is over 4km in length, comprising the fourth longest cave system in Greece. It is developed in limestone benches of Plattenkalk unit tilted at 10o, which are characteristic in the wider area.
''Selinitsa'' Cave has about 3.000m of mapped passages, of which most of passages (about 2.000m) are terrestrial. The cave passages are vadose and phreatic. The cave presents rich speleothemic decorations and has the largest in Hellenic region single collapse chamber of 250x200m in cross dimensions.
''Drakos'' underground river has 1.232m in length and is developed entirely below the sea level. Its entrance lies at depth of 10m but cave passages are developed in three levels, with the deepest parts at -48m. In the third level and at -28m depth, ''Drakos'' is connected with ''Selinitsa'' Cave through a chimney-shaped passage of 28m length. The presence of a big chamber of 50x100m of cross dimensions and of a big stalagmite in the eastern entrance, is notable, too. Generally, speleothermic decoration in ''Drakos'' is poor. Passages are exclusive phreatic and siphons act as lifting tubes, transferring water drained from ''Selinitsa'', underwater from -28m to -10m.
(Kyriaki Papadopoulou-Vrynioti and Isidoros Kampolis, Formation and development of a karstic system below and above sea level in Messinian Mani Peninsula (S. Greece), p. 17-21, Speleogenesis and Evolution of Karst Aquifers, Issue 12, 2012)
Since we were kids, my brother and I were always fascinated by the stories of the elder people regarding the cave of Katafygi Selinitsas! The cave was supposedly so long that it reached the outskirts of Sparta, countless people would have been lost inside, there would be bottomless chasms that split the floor in two etc. etc.! You can guess what a child's imagination would create, fuelled by such stories!
Anyway, because of this way of thinking, Katafygi remained for us for decades something that made a good story, but that was also out of limits for the common people. It was only shortly after our visit to Katafygio Vatsinidi on 08/09/2012 (see links:
and
)
that the idea formed in our minds to try to organize an expedition to explore and wander inside Katafygi Selinitsas!
This series of 4 videos is the result of our expedition; in 55 minutes it describes in brief our 5,5 hours of adventure into the depths of the underworld, as well as the 6-month preparation period we had for this journey! I hope you enjoy watching them as much as we enjoyed making them!
Our group comprised of four people, that is Nora Kouzoumi, Andreas Toumeleas, Christos E. Tsoumeleas and myself. These are the people I would like to thank most for cooperating in such an effective way, for safeguarding the safety of everyone in the group and for sharing this tremendous experience with me!
Also, I would like to thank Thomas and Alfie for their invaluable help by providing first-hand information about the cave. Their advice and directions certainly kept us out of harm's way and on the safe path throughout our visit to Katafygi!
Additionally, I'd like to acknowledge the information we gathered via the websites of the Hellenic Speleological Society and the Società Speleologica Italiana through the countless .pdf files available to the public. The information regarding safety, in particular, was of the utmost importance for us in order to complete our visit in a safe way. Also, the caving motto that we first read about in these websites: Take nothing but pictures, leave nothing but footprints, kill nothing but time set us in the right state of mind for the task at hand.
Last, but not least, I'd like to copy a small text from Thomas's website that I have found extremely important:
To every inexperienced would-be-speleologist who finds the entrance, a SERIOUS WARNING : Never enter Katafygi further than to the White table - appox. 40m from the entrance - without an experienced companion. Even exploring that short distance can be dangerous if there are any problems with your light source, you might bang your head on the ceiling or you might slip and fall at the steep and slippery entrance.

GREECE 2019 - Mr. Thomas H. Ahrens CEO of COMPO EXPERT Group on COMPO EXPERT & Keys My Crops
THOMAS H AHRENS
For me it's a great pleasure to be here in Greece, today, here in the Kalamata area in front of an Olive tree which is probably more than 200 years old (!!!) which leads me to update you on the vision of COMPO EXPERT.
“We want to be the BEST Specialty Fertilisers Company in the World”
that is linked to the special fertilization of crops such as the Olive crop we have here and is one of the “key crops” for us.
How can we achieve it?
We want to achieve it through our “crop approach”, that is a very crop specific and customer centric approach and we are just applying it here directly in Kalamata in olive oil manufacturer (Pertina Agricultural Union).
Our name is COMPO EXPERT but what does it mean?
For me “Expert” means that we identify opportunities in the market and along with our customers we deploy them.
We want to understand the business and the needs of our customer and we want to help our customers to solve the crop problems they have.
Because if you can show that you can solve their problems, they really regard you as an EXPERT which is what we want to be, the expert in the crop business.
Moreover, we want to design specific solutions for our customers and here our crop approach comes really into place. We are developing solutions for our customers and let's take an example here we are in the olive groves in the Kalamata area, here we are helping our customers to solve their problems and we will repeat and transfer this whole thing to other application areas, such as areas in Chile where you have very big olive trees manufacturers. One is for example ‘ACT Solutions” who is a customer of ours and this is an example of how we put our crop approach in action.
Last but not least you know that we have implemented a couple of years ago a special approach, we call it “KEYS My CROPS” which is a crop program and this is really an intercultural change process moving away from product lines, for example having only water soluble salts or having only NPK. Here now we want to give crop programs for our customers.
We do it by defining our target crops, so we have defined 10 target crops and on this target crops we are sharing the program solution, first within a region here in a EMEA and then we are extending this entire approach in other regions such as Asia and Latin America.
So now we have started in Europe because Europe is the spine of our business and we are rolling this “Keys My Crops’ approach out globally and I am personally particularly proud of what we have achieved so far, that a lot of examples what we were successful, we will continue with this approach and I am absolutely sure that we will strengthen our company our culture our values and this is where we stand for as COMPO EXPERT.
Greek-Style Mushroom & Leek Spirals: Manitaropita
Print this recipe here:
Makes 12 spirals:
1-pound (country style) phyllo pastry, thawed and at room temperature
8 ounces unsalted butter, melted
For the filling:
• 2 pounds mushrooms, sliced
• 2 garlic cloves, grated
• ¼ cup olive oil
• 2 leeks, thinly sliced into half moons
• 6 scallions, thinly sliced
• 2 roasted red peppers
• Salt and freshly ground black pepper
• 8 ounces feta cheese
• ¼ cup chopped parsley
• 1 teaspoon dried oregano
• 1 tablespoon finely chopped mint
• 2 eggs, beaten
Optional:
• Kalamata olives, pitted and sliced
• Sundried tomatoes, sliced
• Gouda cheese, grated
Preheat the oven to 400 °F, 200 °C.
Note: You may use regular, #4 phyllo for this recipe. Those pastry sheets are much thicker than the country phyllo and should be doubled per spiral. You will need at least 24 sheets of phyllo. Plus a few extra, in case some sheets are damaged/ripped.
Make the filling:
Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat and add the oil with the mushrooms. Cook 8-10 minutes or until juices are released and dried and the mushrooms are golden. Add the grated garlic, season with salt and pepper, and oregano. Cook for 1 minute more and remove from the heat. Transfer to a large mixing bowl.
Add the leeks to the pan with 1-2 tablespoons olive oil and season with a pinch of salt. Cook until soft. About 5-6 minutes. Add the scallions and cook 3-4 minutes or until softened. Transfer to mixing bowl with the mushrooms.
Add the red peppers, feta cheese, and olives. Mix until combined and taste. Adjust seasoning if needed.
Fold in the beaten eggs along with the herbs.
To form the phyllo spirals:
Remove the phyllo pastry from packaging and place it on your work surface. Work with it quickly so it does not dry out and begin to crumble. You can keep it from drying out by placing a dry kitchen on top of the phyllo then a slightly damp kitchen towel over it.
Take one phyllo sheet and drizzle with some melted butter.
Note: If using #4 phyllo, top with another phyllo sheet and drizzle with some more butter.
Spread 1-2 tablespoons of the mushroom filling along the widest side of the sheet. Fold it upward to form a log. Roll from the edges inward to form a spiral shape.
Place on a baking tray lined with parchment paper.
Brush the spirals with the remaining melted butter.
Bake in the center rack of the oven until golden. About 35-40 minutes.
Allow to cool 15 minutes before serving. Enjoy!
Make Ahead Instructions:
• Assemble the pastries and chill in the freezer (unbaked) until firm.
• Wrap in plastic wrap and keep frozen up to 3 weeks.
• When ready to bake, remove plastic and bake until golden.

How to make a Greek Salad
This is how you make a basic Greek salad. This recipe is covering the basic ingredients. You can add Feta, olives or any other delicious additions to it. It is one very healthy yet a delicious salad that balance out the grilled meats that are very popular in Greece.
Equipment used to produce this video:
- “Flagship killer” smartphone Oneplus 2 as camera.
- Low budget tripod with flexible standard.
- Software used to edit video footage used is Lightworks.
- I will transfer at least 1 video per week from my custom build computerdesk with integrated computer to Youtube. At least I will try to.
Some people claim that it is easier to cook with electricity, like a ceramic hob, and that it is cheaper. I solely cook with gas since I have no other choice. Also most Chinese dishes are only cooked with fire instead of electricity.

Trading in subs is not accepted by me and against my believes to truly grow. So requests will not be replied on.
And I’m sorry that I have to say I do not have time to give cooking classes since I have a fulltime job beside my Youtube video making. But I might try to make some hosting videos in the future of how to cook.
Please feel free to leave any comment, positive or negative, behind. Since I am also a normal human bad treatment will not be appreciated.
