Trinity Hill Homage 2015 Launch
New Zealand's finest Syrah is only made in years when the grapes are at their best. Hence why in 15 years there has only been 8 vintages. I had the privilege of being one of a select group of wine adorers who flew down to the Hawkes Bay to taste the latest (2015) vintage.
Beyond Sauvignon Blanc...Trinity Hill
New Zealand is known world wide for its wonderful Sauvignon Blanc. Especially in the Canadian market, this varietal is the one that fills our New Zealand sections in the wine stores. But, as part of a series called Beyond Sauvignon Blanc we look at what else New Zealand has to offer our market and others.
A stop at Trinity Hill in Hastings on the north Island was a wonderful highlight on our tour of various wineries on the north and south islands of New Zealand. John Hancock and Warren Gibson, plus the rest of team at Trinity Hill, made the visit a purely enjoyable and informative. It was truly an honour to meet and spend time with them. Felt right at home.
***Sorry for the popping noise in the first few minutes of the video. It was both the guns going off at the Army Training facility and the pops set off to scare birds away from the vines.
Watch for our other videos as part of the Beyond Sauvignon Blanc series in the coming weeks.

Stuart MacGill wines about Trinity Hill
I'd never met John Hancock from Trinity Hill before this visit to his winery. I reckon within 10 minutes he'd made me feel as though we'd been mates for years. I've seen him several times since, and every time he's been equally warm and genuinely interested in catching up. He's a great bloke, and I'm look forward to sharing a bottle again with him someday.
I forgot to tell you that he makes sensational wine!

Gimblett Gravels, Hawkes Bay, New Zealand
In the 1860’s, huge floods dominated New Zealand’s region of Hawkes Bay, turning many rivers into land. After the floods subsided the Ngaruroro River had changed its course and a vista of gravel was left. Made up of red metal, alluvial soils, gravel and stone terraces, these vineyards provide excellent free draining soils while the gravels hold the heat allowing many late ripening grape varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah to develop complex, powerful flavours while the cool nights allow the fruit to retain fresh, crisp elegance.

Craggy Range Syrah Block 14
Deep ruby with crimson highlights. A complex array of lavender, raspberry, black cherry, sandalwood, and liquorice combine for an intense and complex bouquet. Ripe berry fruit balance with exotic spice flavours through the palate. Sensuous texture and a persistent length of flavour, the hallmarks of this vineyard.
Interview with Claire Mulholland of Burn Cottage (Central Otago, New Zealand)
At a recent Cellarhand wine tasting day, we grabbed the reluctant Claire Mulholland of Burn Cottage wines, to have a quick chat with us about how things are progressive at this new & exciting Central Otago project.
The Pinot, despite being already sold out, is very, very impressive indeed and well worth seeking out (if you can find it).
Thanks for chatting with us Claire, we know you hate the camera!
