TRITON FOUNTAIN in Valletta Malta (European City Of Culture 2018)
THE TRITON FOUNTAIN IN VALLETTA MALTA (The European City Of Culture 2018). One of Valletta and Malta's most important tourist landmarks, the Triton Fountain sits just outside the walls and ancient city gates of Valletta.
Designed by the sculptor Vincent Apap and the designer Victor Anastasi, the Triton Fountain became fully operational on 16 May 1959.
The Triton Fountain was damaged when the platter collapsed in 1978, and repair works done to the fountain in 1986 did not fit in with its original design.
The Triton fountain deteriorated in subsequent decades, until the bronze figures were dismantled and restored in 2017.
Works were ready by the end of the year, and the Triton fountain and piazza just outside the city gates of Valletta were officially inaugurated on 12 January 2018
A must see tourist attraction if you visit Malta, The Triton Fountain looks majestic whether you visit in the daytime in the heat of the Malta sun, or the night time when the illuminated water and fountain come alive. Definitely one of the must see Malta tourist attractions

ABOUT THE TRITON FOUNTAIN:
The Triton fountain consists of three bronze figures of mythological Tritons holding up a platter.
Two of the Tritons are sitting, while the third one is kneeling, and they are balanced on a seaweed base.
Little known fact - The face of each Triton on the fountain is visible when viewed from Valletta City Gate.
The restored Triton fountain was officially inaugurated on 12 January 2018, by Malta's Prime Minister Joseph Muscat.
The works were completed a week ahead of Valletta taking its position as European Capital of Culture 2018.

The site of the triton fountain was formerly occupied by St. Madeleine's Lunette, a 17th-century lunette that protected the entrance to Valletta.
The lunette was dismantled and its ditch was filled in with rubble in the 19th century, although some parts might have survived beneath the present street level.
The area was eventually used as a bus terminus, and in January 1953 the Ministry for Public Works and Reconstruction launched a competition for designing a fountain in this empty Valletta space.
The competition was open to everyone except for those who worked at the Public Works Department, and the first prize was of £100.
The winning proposal for the fountain was entitled Triton, and it was submitted by the sculptor Vincent Apap.
It was designed in collaboration with the draughtsman and designer Victor Anastasi, who was not mentioned on the proposal since he was employed by the PWD.
Apap worked on the sculpture of three Tritons in stucco at a former dovecote in Palazzo Parisio, which had been made available by his friend, the marquis Joe Scicluna. Meanwhile, Anastasi worked on the technical and architectural elements of the triton fountain, including the hydraulic systems, and costs and supplies of materials to Valletta.

VALLETTA TRITON FOUNTAIN
The Triton Fountain is a fountain located on the periphery of the City Gate of Valletta, Malta. The fountain features three bronze tritons, two of them sitting, one kneeling, all holding up a platter. They are balanced on a seaweed base. The son of Poseidon and Amphitrite, Triton is the messenger of the sea in Greek mythology. These Maltese tritons symbolise Malta’s links with the sea. The base was constructed out of reinforced concrete and clad in 730 tonnes of travertine slabs from Rome. The fountain is one of Malta's most important Modernist landmarks.
The 1959 Triton fountain has been fully-restored and inaugurated by Malta's Prime Minister on 12 January 2018. The new approach to Valletta's entrance features a paved square with trees around it. Where buses once parked, people now walk and the crowning piece Triton fountain, now majestically lies at the entrance of City-Gate of Valletta.

Triton Fountain located right outside the main City Gate of Valletta, three half-humans, half-mermen are one of the first things everyone sees as they enter Malta's historic capital. We start amongst the restaurants and bars of Old Theatre Street before moving into St George's Square.
Following Republic Street, we encounter Republic Square and the Great Siege Monument 1565. We are then welcomed by the bells of St John's Cathedral as we pass into Merchants Street before taking St Lucia's Street. With the stunning view of Sta. Lucija before us, we descend the old steps onto Lvant and the old city walls.
We pass Victoria Gate and gaze out to the harbour before passing the Grand Harbour Hotel and Hotel British before our ascent back up past the Saluting Battery and onto Castille Place and a view of the Auberge Castille.
We continue to the Royal Opera House, past the New Parliament Building and exit through the grand Valletta City gate towards the renovated plaza and the Triton Fountain.
