TUATARA BREWERY TOUR & TASTINGS REDUX
TUATARA BREWERY TOUR & TASTINGS REDUX.
Tuatara Brewery is one of those breweries which began as a backyard operation in the hills above Waikanae. It was founded by Carl Vasta, an engineer with the taste buds of a wine critic and with kiwi ingenuity. Carl is the living, breathing epitome of that noble philosophy. If he needed a shed or a bottler or a tank, he'd just go ahead and build one. Carl managed to brew a superb range of Ales, Porters and Pilsners under the name Tuatara.
The Tuatara brewing scheme is not difficult for the uninitiated to grasp. The brew is true to style, so wherever possible we go direct to the source and use the ingredients that have made that style famous.
Tuatara Brewery is one of the leading lights of New Zealand's world-beating craft beer scene and this is the perfect place to peek behind the curtain and find out where all those amazing Beers are made.
On the Tuatara Brewery Tour you'll see and do on a reconnaissance of the brand new secret headquarters in Paraparaumu, just North of Wellington's, Craft Beer Capital:
- The tour is led by either a production manager or master brewer.
- A comprehensive introduction to the brewing process.
- A close-up look at the raw ingredients
- On special days watch brews getting put together from grain to beer
- As well as a Complimentary selection of Tuatara brews with tasting tips from your all-knowing Zen beer master
It's a must for the beer fanatic or just the beer curious. Tuatara Brewing Company - 2015 Conehead (Air-Hopped IPA) 6%
Brewed by Tuatara Brewing Company
Style: American Pale Ale
Paraparaumu, New Zealand
Serve in Lager glass, Shaker, Tulip
COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
2013 version - Throwing hops straight from the vine into the brew, undisciplined by kiln drying or other modes of professional behaviour, is called green hopping. In Conehead’s case, that means massive amounts of Nelson Sauvin in the hopback and Citra and Amarillo in the boil. Voodoo like this may sound a little random, but judging by the heady aroma of lychees, gooseberry, passionfruit and citrus balances with an appropriate bitterness, it seems somebody’s been doing their homework. - 5.8%
2012 version - Brewed with new season Riwaka and Motueka cones hops and shed load of freshly picked whole Green Nelson Sauvin hops in the hopback. - 5.5%
The hops are always greener on the other side, in this case the other side of Cook Strait. There’s only one way to get those cones to the North Island in prime condition and that’s to scramble the jets. OK, it’s to scramble a single engine prop plane with the seats taken out, but be assured that the 800kg of green hops that went into Conehead 2015 were flown direct from Nelson to Paraparaumu in an actual plane, touching down right next door to the Tuatara Brewery. One short hop for a brewer, one giant green-hopping for mankind.
Style: Green-hopped IPA
Tasting Notes: Enjoy vibrant notes of passionfruit, gooseberry and
grapefruit that only the freshest Sauvin hops can provide.
Look: Golden Pale Ale
Aroma: Tropical fruits, passionfruit, gooseberry, mango and spicy grapefruit.
Try With: Szechaun Roast Duck, Braised Rabbit, and good continental sausage.
Ingredients:
Malt: Crystal and light crystal
Hops: Nelson Sauvin

Beer Tasting Tuatara Bohemian Pilsner
Got a few beers from the International section of our local bottlo (Australian slang for an establishment which sells alcohol).
We decided to film our trials and/or errors of the beers we picked and hopefully capture some funniness as we got further through the bottle.
This week we tried 'Tuatara Bohemian Pilsner' a Pilsner from Paraparaumu, New Zealand. It costs around $5-6 per 330ml bottle and is 5%.

Mojo Coffee has been keeping Wellingtonians on high alert for almost as long as Tuatara has been chilling them out, so a collaboration seemed well overdue. Tuatara’s new BLACK series provided the perfect excuse. Introducing coffee into our toasted malt stout has given it a delicious burnt fruit tartness and gateaux texture with a building bitterness more than reminiscent of a good espresso. Dignified aging is on the cards, but in the meantime you have the perfect excuse to bracket both ends of your day with a Mojo hit.

If you’re going to do a collaboration with a chocolate company, it needs to taste like real chocolate and have chocolate in it. That was the fighting talk from Rochelle and Gabe at the Wellington Chocolate Factory when we asked them to collaborate with us on a stout that would deliver the kind of sensory cocoa walloping you get from one of their own fabulous hot chocolates. After a lot of tasting we’ve settled on 100% organic Fair Trade cacao nibs and chocolate from the Dominican Republic, resulting in an beguilingly smooth stout lovingly wrapped in rich, dark chocolate. Hops: Pacific Jade, Chinook, Amarillo Malt: Dark kilned and roasted malts
