Tucson, Arizona Downtown and Camping at Tucson Mountain Park
Tucson Mountain Park is 2 miles west of town on Route 86. There is no hunting allowed. Other than that there are no restrictions. BEAUTIFUL views of Tucson from the high ground (especially at night), saguaros all over the place, good place to camp if you can find level ground. Very rocky (sharp rocks of every size).
Driving through Tucson Mountain Park and into Tucson, AZ - 6/9/2015
Title says it all. We were coming from Saguaro National Park/ North Kinney Road, heading into Tucson through Tucson Mountain Park. We stopped in the park for the sunset. Here's a video from the park and the sunset:
I definitely recommend Tucson Mountain Park to anyone on vacation in the Tucson area. Please pay attention to wildlife as even turtles cross streets in and near the park.
At first, I recommend you to open a new tab and play some music you like (more about music below). And here's a general advise, you can set the speed of the video, just open the options menu on the lower right of the video player and you can e.g. double the speed of the video.
Back to the music. I muted the audio to keep this video available in all countries and due to copyright. If you don't have any music I would recommend you Tom Petty - running down a dream; Tom Cochrane - life is a highway; Morris Day And - Jungle love; 4 Non Blondes - What's up; The Romantics - what I like about you; Depeche Mode - enjoy the silence; various Michael Jackson songs such as black or white and don't stop 'til you get enough, ......
Those were some songs I listed to while driving in the area and they really fit to it. But everyone likes different music ;) ps XM radio is awesome!! :)

Scenic Gates Pass Road in Tucson Mountain Park - February 15, 2013
One of the most scenic drives in Tucson, Arizona, Gates Pass Road is where you can observe a great desert landscape populated by saguaros on steep mountain slopes and see truly spectacular sunsets. I made sure to stop at the popular Gates Pass Road overlook around sunset so I could snap a few photos. I've included them near the end of this video.
Hiking Tucson Mountain Park - Golden Gate Mountain Summit
This video describes the climb up Golden Gate Mountain in Tucson Mountain Park the way it was on 12-27-2017. The 3.5 mile hike gained 1600 feet in elevation and took us about 4 hours to complete. We started and ended at the Yetman Trail head near Gates Pass. We started by going west on the Golgen Gate Trail and then scrambled up the west side of the mountain. While at the top we discovered a cairned use trail that we took down the northeast side of the mountain that connected up to the Yetman Trail .6 of a mile east of Yetman Trailhead. It is a fun and fairly difficult climbwith good views from the top.

Desert Hike To Old Tucson
This hike starts out in the back of the Desert Trails RV park in Tucson, Arizona on BLM land, then through part of the Tucson Mountain Park. The 8½ mile hike is flat and winds through some beautiful desert areas filled with several varieties of cacti and surrounded with great mountain views.
Old Tucson was a movie studio that is now an entertainment park. We didn't go through the park proper we just hiked through a small part of it that has a mock up of an old west town.
Golden Gate mountain is prominent during many parts of this hike and we climbed it shortly after we did this hike.

All Souls Procession Weekend
Day of the Dead float, Pima County Public Library, 2017 procession
The All Souls Procession, held in early November, is one of the largest festivals in Tucson. Modeled on the Mexican holiday Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead), it combines aspects of many different cultural traditions. The first All Souls Procession was organized by local artist Susan Kay Johnson in 1982 and involved 78 participants; by 2017, participation was estimated at 142,000.
The Procession, held at sundown, consists of a non-motorized parade through downtown Tucson featuring many floats, sculptures, and memorials, in which the community is encouraged to participate. The parade is followed by performances on an outdoor stage, culminating in the burning of an urn in which written prayers have been collected from participants and spectators. The event is organized and funded by the non-profit arts organization Many Mouths One Stomach, with the assistance of many volunteers and donations from the public and local businesses.
A 19th-century adobe house in the Armory Park neighborhood
Similar to many other cities in the Western U.S., Tucson was developed on a grid plan starting in the late 19th century, with the city center at Stone Avenue and Broadway Boulevard. While this intersection was initially near the geographic center of Tucson, that center has shifted as the city has expanded far to the east, development to the west being effectively blocked by the Tucson Mountains. An expansive city covering substantial area, Tucson has many distinct neighborhoods.
Tucson's earliest neighborhoods, some of which are now covered by the Tucson Convention Center, or TCC, include:
El Presidio, Tucson's oldest neighborhood
Barrio Histórico, also known as Barrio Libre
Armory Park, directly south of downtown
Barrio Anita, named for an early settler and located between Granada Avenue and Interstate 10
Barrio Tiburón, now known as the Fourth Avenue arts district − designated in territorial times as a red-light district
Barrio El Jardín, named for an early recreational site, Levin's Gardens
Barrio El Hoyo, named for a lake that was part of the gardens. Before the TCC was built, El Hoyo (Spanish for pit or hole) referred to this part of the city, which was inhabited mainly by Mexican-American citizens and Mexican immigrants.
Barrio Santa Rosa, dating from the 1890s, now listed as a historic district on the National Register of Historic Places
Other historical neighborhoods near downtown include:
Iron Horse, east of Fourth Avenue and north of the railroad tracks, named for its proximity
West University, between the University of Arizona and downtown
Dunbar Spring, west of West University
Pie Allen, west and south of the university near Tucson High School and named for John Brackett Pie Allen, a local entrepreneur and early mayor of Tucson
Sam Hughes, east of the University of Arizona, named after a Tucson pioneer
Bikes along Congress Street near Fifth Avenue
At the end of the first decade of the 21st century, downtown Tucson underwent a revitalization effort by city planners and the business community. The primary project was Rio Nuevo, a large retail and community center that has been stalled in planning for more than ten years. Downtown is generally regarded as the area bordered by 17th Street to the south, I-10 to the west, and 6th Street to the north, and Toole Avenue and the Union Pacific (formerly Southern Pacific) railroad tracks, site of the historic train depot and Locomotive #1673, built in 1900. Downtown is divided into the Presidio District, the Barrio Viejo, and the Congress Street Arts and Entertainment District. Some authorities include the 4th Avenue shopping district, which is set just northeast of the rest of downtown and connected by an underpass beneath the UPRR tracks.

Sonoran Desert Weedwackers at Tucson Mountain Park
The Sonoran Desert Weedwackers have been removing invasive grasses from Tucson Mountain Park since 2000. They work every third Saturday of the month year-round for about three hours. A smaller group also works on the second and fourth Wednesdays of the month for about four hours.
Pima County staff provides the equipment and transportation to the site. The activity on Saturdays is moderate exertion whereas the Wednesday projects require a bit more stamina. The Weedwackers work year-round starting earlier (6:00am) during the summer and later (8:00am) in the winter.
