CHANDLER AZ TUMBLEWEED RECREATION CENTER
If you live in or around the Chandler area and have not been to the Tumbleweed Recreation Center you must go! The Chandler Tumbleweed Recreation Center is located at 745 East Germann Road, Chandler, Arizona 85286 just west of McQueen Road. This place had something for everyone even if they didn't know they needed it! Some of the amenities are a gymnasium, a 6,000 square foot fitness area, racquetball courts, an indoor track, class rooms, ceramic studio, art studio, a lounge, catering & teaching kitchen, computer lab, teen lounge, multi-purpose rooms, game room, dance studio, group exercise studio, locker rooms with showers, shaded courtyard, meeting rooms and a child watch area while you're busy doing one of the activities.
The fitness area has approximately 50 pieces of cardiovascular equipment which includes treadmills, bikes, cross trainers, elliptical machines and strength training equipment that is truly state of the art. The indoor track is 1/10th of a mile and has great views of the facility and views of the outside through the partially glassed 2nd floor. The gymnasium is available 7 days a week for basketball and volleyball. If you'd like to work out and have children between the ages of 1-7, The Tree House will provide supervised activities such as crafts, reading and climbing for up to 2 hours for participants Monday-Friday 8am-12pm, 4pm-9pm and Saturday from 8am-1pm.
If you're interested in cardio, strength training, fitness classes such as pilates or yoga, computer programs, teen programs, active adult programs, birthday parties, wellness programs, special interest classes, intersession programs, fine arts or a wedding, the Tumbleweed Recreation Center has just about everything.
One of the things that I find very positive is the fees. Unlike traditional gyms that require that you authorize them to automatically charge your debit or credit card monthly and then require a minimum 30 day fee after you cancel, the Tumbleweed Recreation Center is probably one of the most flexible places to work out. An adult pass for residents ages 20-54 runs $30 per month, non-residents are $41 while the same age range for a daily pass runs $4 per day for residents and $6 per day for non-residents. They also have annual and punch passes so contact them at (480) 782.2900.
I have not even started with the outdoor facilities which will be more useful now that we're coming upon our prime time of year for those types of activities. There are so many programs and activities at Tumbleweed Recreation Center that I encourage you to check out their website at Tumbleweed Recreation Center or call them at (480) 782.2900.
Chandler, AZ Tumbleweed Tree
About 1,000 tumbleweeds are assembled into a 30-foot wire frame covered with 25 gallons of white paint. The weeds are sprayed with 20 gallons of flame retardant, 65 pounds of glitter and wear about 1,200 lights. Chandler is the only city in the southwestern United States to have a tumbleweed Christmas tree.
A Chandler Tradition: The Tumbleweed Tree
Every Christmas holiday season since 1957, Downtown Chandler has been home to one of the most unique traditions in the southwest, the Tumbleweed Tree. When city leaders were looking for new holiday decoration ideas, Chandler resident Earl Barnum raised the idea of a tumbleweed tree after he saw a similar one in Indiana built out of cone-shaped chicken wire with pine boughs stuck in the holes. Many members of the community helped create the first tree in Chandler using tumbleweeds that they gathered from around town.
How is it made, you ask?
First, members of the City's Park Operations Division gather hard-to-find tumbleweeds from the outskirts of the city. Between 1,000-1,200 tumbling tumbleweeds are collected each year and are used to adorn a 25-foot tall wire frame. Then, the tumbleweeds are sprayed with 25 gallons of white paint, 20 gallons of flame retardant and dusted with 65 pounds of glitter. The tree is later adorned with approximately 1,200 holiday lights that give it a spectacular look, day or night. The lighting of the Tumbleweed Tree draws a large crowd to watch the Mayor and members of the City Council flip the switch to light this magnificent sight. The Tumbleweed Tree Lighting Ceremony and the Parade of Lights help to bring our community together to kick-off the holidays.

Overview of Chandler, Arizona
In 1891, Dr. Alexander Chandler, the first veterinary surgeon in the Arizona Territory, settled on a ranch south of Mesa, studying irrigation engineering. By 1900, he had acquired 18,000 acres of land, and began drawing up plans for a townsite on what was then known as the Chandler Ranch. The townsite office opened on May 17, 1912, the same year that Chandler High School was established. By 1913, a town center was established, featuring the Hotel San Marcos, the first golf resort in the state. Chandler has a total area of 58 square miles and has reached its physical limits, with the exception of some remaining county islands. It can no longer expand because it is land-locked by the Gila River Indian Community, Tempe, Mesa, Gilbert, and Phoenix.
Throughout Chandler you'll find fabulous parks, waterparks and great schools. An anchor of the downtown area is still the San Marcos Golf Resort. Consisting of the Crowne Plaza and all the modern amenities you can imagine plus world class golf, it is still a premier destination in the Valley. The Ocotillo area is very popular with many shops and restaurants, fabulous golf and a country club. Chandler Fashion Center is an upscale mall where you'll find stores such as Nordstrom, Macy's and Pottery Barn. Many other stores and strip malls surround the mall area creating a shopping mecca that can rival any in the country. The downtown area has been developed into a popular attraction with shopping, restaurants and even a improv club. There are many amazing restaurants downtown and you'll find everything from Italian, Thai, a steak house and even an ice cream sandwich shop!
Once a month the city holds a downtown art walk with local artists and live music. Every Thursday from October through April you'll be able to visit the weekly farmers market featuring over 30 vendors. And of course, there is the annual Tumbleweed Tree Lighting and Parade of Lights with dancers, stage performers and Santa's Workshop. The tumbleweed tree is definitely a unique way for the city to display it's ingenuity.
From waterslides to any kind of restaurant you can imagine, farmers markets to high end shopping, you'll find what you're looking for in Chandler. With it's great location, access to freeways and great schools, you're going to want to visit Chandler.....and you might want to put down roots here!

A Christmas tree made of tumbleweeds rises again in Chandler
Putting up the tree takes on new meaning for Chandler city employees, who have been working for months to assemble a beautiful white Christmas tree out of tumbleweeds. Building the two-story tree in the center of town is a hard, but rewarding, job. Cronkite News' Clarissa Tapia reports.
