(8 Jul 1978) The Malaysian general elections, the fifth since Malaysia gained independence from the british in 1957, were the quietest ever. Campaign rallies had been banned for security reasons. The police had also banned victory parades to prevent a recurrence of the excesses of the 1969 elections which had erupted into a racial war between the Malays and the Chinese. Malaysia still focused on retrieval of remains at MH17 crash site, defence minister says
A Malaysian official said on Thursday his country was still focused on the retrieval of any remains from the crash site of flight MH17 in eastern Ukraine.
Defence Minister Hishammuddin Hussein made his comment following a special meeting in Kuala Lumpur where a number of ministers, including Transport Minister Liow Tiong Lai discussed the repatriation of the Malaysian dead from the tragedy.
At the news conference afterwards, Tiong Lai also said a preliminary report on the incident should be ready by next week.
Flight 17 was shot down in Eastern Ukraine on July 17, killing all 298 on board.
44 were Malaysian citizens.
