A Hidden Restaurant Inside an NYC Russian Bathhouse
The Russian & Turkish Bath House in NYC’s East Village has been around since 1892 – longer than The Empire State Building. But most people don’t know that it houses a restaurant with a lengthy menu featuring Russian delicacies.
The bath house is part owned by Dasha and her husband Chris, who are part of the third generation of owners. With their staff, the couple details the traditional and sometimes quirky spa experience at the Russian & Turkish Baths, including the shvitz rooms, the ice-cold pool, Dead Sea mud massage, and the platza (oak leaf) healing therapy. In the restaurant kitchen, Chef Leon prepares classic Russian dishes like blini, borscht, Siberian pelmeni (beef dumplings), beef stroganoff, traditional Russian breakfast, much more.

9. SOUNDBITE (English) Jean-Paul Gaultier/Designer: When I did my last collection for women, inspired with the different ethnic mixed together, you know, Chinese, with African with Moroccan, et cetera. At some moment I was doing the turban, you know in silver, and I was saying, 'Ah that is a little inspired by Yves Saint Laurent in Marrakesh. And after I said, why not, for men, Saint Laurent in Marrakesh, you know, like that. So it's an inspiration, an eternal inspiration. He invents the code of the 20th century and maybe 21 century. So I thought about it and I did that collection.

11. SOUNDBITE (English) of Jean-Paul Gaultier And also in that period, in the 70's, there were also psychedelism and I thought that maybe the three dimensional is the psychedelism of today, so why not put some prints that should be in 3-D. So you have to put your glasses on and after you can see it's 3-D.

JEAN-PAUL GAULTIER BRINGS FASHION INTO THE THIRD DIMENSION
Set in a Moroccan steam bath, Jean Paul Gaultier's spring-summer 2011 menswear collection opened Thursday (24 JUNE 2010) in Paris with Chippendale models lounging in a mock Turkish bath, dousing each other with water and giving one another deep tissue back massages. It was a lascivious start to a show that dripped with retro sensuality.
Kaftans with Gaultier's signature transparent paneling were paired with harem pants, while kinky, lace-front tunics were worn with minuscule Speedos in X-rated, see-through tulle that got downgraded to R thanks to strategically placed opaque patches.
Gaultier said the collection was inspired by the late, great French couturier Yves Saint Laurent, who lived in Marrakech and adopted traditional Moroccan dress into his androgynous style.
When I did my last collection for women, inspired with the different ethnic mixed together, you know, Chinese, with African with Moroccan, et cetera, at some moment I was doing the turban, you know in silver, and I was saying, 'Ah that is a little inspired by Yves Saint Laurent in Marrakesh, said Gaultier after the runway show. And after I said, why not, for men, Saint Laurent in Marrakesh, you know, like that. So it's an inspiration, an eternal inspiration. He invents the code of the 20th century and maybe 21 century. So I thought about it and I did that collection.
Special 3-D glasses were needed to fully appreciate the wacky prints on the silk robes and pajama pants that closed the show, and the audience of fashion insiders donned the least chic possible accessory -- paper glasses with one blue eye and one red eye that doubled as the show invitations -- to take in the fluttering garments in all their vaguely three-dimensional glory.
Despite its languid, steam-clouded start, the show ended with a theatrical bang, with the bathing-suit clad models soaking one another -- and Gaultier -- ahead of their final lap down the runway. One, appropriately playing the part of the traditional water bearer, took a spill on the slick catwalk.

INGRES TURKISH BATH 1863.mov
JEAN AUGUSTE DOMINIQUE INGRES PAINTED THE TURKISH BATH FIRST IN 1859 IN A RECTANGULAR FORMAT. THIS WAS REJECTED BY PRINCESS CLOTILDE FOR EXCESS NUDITY, IRITATED HE CHANGED IT TO A ROUND FORMAT IN 1863. INGRES HAD NEVER BEEN TO TURKEY BUT LADY MONTAGU'S LETTERS FROM THE BATHS OF SOFIA STIRRED HIS LOVE FOR THE FEMALE FORM. MOST OF INGRES WORKS ARE LIMITED TO PORTRAITS OF ONE OR TWO FIGURES WHEREAS THIS MASTERPIECE PRESENTS OVER TWENTY WONDERFULLY RELAXED HAPPY FEMALE PULCHRITUDE, MRS J.A.D.INGRES IS PRESENT IN THE LOWER RIGHT STARING AT THE PAINTER ENJOYING HIS PLEASURE.
AFTER CRITICISM BY HIS NEMESIS DELACROIX, INGRES SAID THAT HE WAS A CONSERVATOR OF GOOD DOCTRINE AND NOT AN INNOVATOR. HIS EXPRESSIVE DISTORTIONS OF FORM AND SPACE MAKE HIM AN IMPORTANT PRECURSOR OF MODERN ART. AFTER A CONTEMPOARY SAID HE MADE COLD LIKENESSES OUT OF ZINC , DEGAS CRIED PERHAPS! BUT THEN HE IS A ZINC-SMITH OF GENIUS.

The Turkish Bath
Last week, we talked about Tamara de Lempicka and, this week, we're looking at one of the sources of her inspiration: Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres. The Turkish Bath is one of his last paintings and, according to Ingres himself, his best. In an unconventional circular shape, this painting is an example of orientalism by the depiction of eastern subjects.
