TOP 21 TURKISH FOODS | Istanbul Food Guide
What is food in Turkey like? This is by all means, not a cumulative list of Turkish cuisine. I recommend all travelers to explore Turkish food on their own-- Turkey has a fascinating Ottoman history and culture of farming, fishing and livestock and you will find this reflected in their food as well.
Note: My diet was limited to Turkish vegetarian foods . I didn't document my experiences with mezzes (side dishes, which occasionally can be vegetable based)

ISTANBUL STREET FOOD will BLOW YOU AWAY!! Turkish Street Food HEAVEN - Adana Kebab + Pickle Juice!
Kemeraltı Bazaar in Izmir:
Iskender Kebab in Bursa :
Amazing street food can be found all around Istanbul! Join us as we continue our Street Food in Turkey tour! Today we are going to be trying some unique foods you’ve never heard of!
For breakfast, we are having a RARE type of turşu suyu, which is pickle juice. We ordered the “mixed” version - with cabbage, carrots, cucumbers and beets. And of course, the pickle juice is SPICY! (5 TRY / 0.86 USD)
Next, we’re visiting a weekly fresh market called Tarlabaşi Pazari which is only open on Sundays. In the summer, apricots are in season, and they are worth trying fresh at this traditional market!
In Istanbul, you can sample delicious cuisine that comes from all over Turkey. This time, we decided on Adana cuisine. Adana kebab is made from hand-minced lamb meat cooked over charcoal. That smokey flavour and juicy lamb is HEAVEN! (35 TRY / 6.02 USD)
If you’ve never tried traditional Turkish ice cream, you are missing out! We head to an old-school shop serving up a chewy textured (made from mastic) ice cream cone. So incredible on a hot Turkish summer day! (4.5 TRY / 0.77 USD)
Next up is a cruise on the iconic Bosphorus, because a trip to Istanbul is not complete without one. We opted for the economic TurYol cruise, a 90-minute tour north that passes palaces, mansions, bridges and plenty of gorgeous sights. For 20 TRY / 3.44 USD, that is totally worth it!!!
Since we were near the Bosphorus, we thought we would try the very FAMOUS Balik Ekmek, or grilled fish sandwich. In a tourist hot-spot, served from a real boat, the sights surrounding the restaurant are why it is so popular. The food however, was not that tasty and isn’t considered a good choice among the locals. We wanted to see what the hype was about. Oh well! (15 TRY / 2.58 USD)

Street Food in Istanbul, Turkey 2019
Istanbul: Turkish cuisine at a crossroads | AJ Eats
We explore how a new generation is keeping Turkey's centuries-old culinary traditions alive in a modern world.
Istanbul sits at the point of intersection between Europe and Asia and its food has been heavily influenced by its rich history and traditions: the palace food from the Ottoman times, the Armenian and Greek influences and that from Anatolia.
Although Istanbul is often visited for its past, it's very much a modern metropolis. In a buzzing city with 14 million inhabitants, the food scene is also booming.
Twenty-five percent of the city's population is employed one way or another in the food business and many young people are creating opportunities for themselves from its rich gastronomic history.
AJEats finds out how food became such a strong part of the culture, and what the future holds for Istanbul's food lovers in a world of fast food and mass production.
PRESENTER'S VIEW
By Gerald Tan
Turkish cuisine was once described to me as the original fusion food. It instantly made sense. How often do we hear that Turkey's commercial hub, Istanbul, is the only city occupying two continents, the point where Europe and Asia embrace. It would follow, then, that their culinary influences would be prevalent in Turkey.
Indeed, geography plays a role. The original settlers were nomadic Turkic tribes who left the steppes between the Ural and Altay mountains, migrating towards Central Asia, the Balkans, and finally Anatolia. They brought the elements and practices they picked up along the way, including the food.
But there's a much deeper story. Istanbul was also the seat of not one but four empires. It was during the 600-year reign of the Ottomans that Turkish cuisine as we know it began to crystallise. The sultans were quite simply obsessed with food. Archives dating back to the 15th century detail with great accuracy the kind of feasts served to the royal family, the court, and dignitaries from across the land.
Visiting the imperial kitchen at Topkapi Palace can be bewildering for any food lover. The sheer size of the industrial-sized chimney stacks is an indication of how much activity took place. Cooks from across the empire vied to get in, hoping to catch the attention of the sultan through their cooking.
It was this spirit of competition and creativity that gave birth to thousands of dishes, such as hunkar begendi (stewed lamb with eggplant puree) and mahmudiye (chicken with dried fruit), and propelled Turkish cuisine to be classed as one of the world's three grand cuisines, alongside French and Chinese, a distinction based solely on variety.
Today, it's the youth determining Turkey's gastronomic future. I dined with Korhan Karakoyun, a licensed guide who went through rigorous tests on his country's history and now conducts food tours, where he introduces visitors to traditional Turkish dishes and those preparing them in the old ways. I got to cook with the popular TV chef Refika Birgul, who has made a name for herself adapting ancient recipes to suit modern lifestyles. And I met the Demirhan brothers, entrepreneurs tapping into the growing demand for home-cooked flavours delivered to the doorstep.
All of them are part of a generation not only defining themselves through food but also furiously trying to keep traditions of the Turkish kitchen alive.
THE PEOPLE SHAPING TURKEY'S CULINARY FUTURE
Refika Birgul, the celebrity chef
Refika Birgul [Al Jazeera]
Twitter: @refikabirgul
Refika blushes when she's called a celebrity chef, but there is no better way to describe this humble TV personality.
She is the host of a nationally broadcast cooking show called Mucize Lezzetler (filmed in her kitchen) and the author of the cookbook, Refika'nin Mutfagi. Her recipes are rooted in classic Turkish flavours but adapted to suit a modern lifestyle - typically healthier and quicker to prepare.
Korhan & Leisa Karakoyun, the food tour guide
For those who enjoy eating their way through a city, Korhan is the guy to know in Istanbul. He and his wife Leisa host food tours, taking visitors to places where iconic Turkish dishes are prepared using ancestral methods.
All tour guides in Turkey go through rigorous training from the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, but Korhan's genuine love for food makes it an even more memorable experience.
Murat & Bulent Demirhan, the entrepreneurs
Murat & Bulent Demirhan [Al Jazeera]
Twitter: @_MuratDemirhan_
Murat & Bulent are a dynamic duo. In less than two years, the brothers turned an idea of delivering home-style Turkish cooking into a mini fast-food empire.

WE'RE IN TURKEY! Modern Turkish Breakfast in Kadikoy | Istanbul Food & Travel Vlog
Our first Turkey vlog! In Istanbul we travel around to find a Turkish breakfast in our Kadikoy area and discover that the best...✈ Our 220 page guide on how to travel non-stop —
We're so excited to be in Istanbul and sharing this first Turkey travel vlog with you from Kadikoy! We've heard so much about the food in Istanbul being the best and how good Turkish breakfast is, so it's only natural in our first vlog we went hunting for a Turkish breakfast with a bit of a twist. Same food, well sort of, but with a new modern approach.
Our local neighbourhood is called Kadikoy on the Asia side of Istanbul and is home to more Turkish locals than tourists - and we love that! You can see in the vlog, there's not too many travellers around, which makes the food that much more traditional.
In saying that, we wanted to take a new twist on the famous Turkish breakfast in this vlog, so we found a place that serves the same kind of food and flavours but using pancakes and a few of the best sweeter options.
This is only vlog 1 from Turkey, 2 more to share from Istanbul and then we start a massive tour to see a heap more of what Turkey has to offer.

Turkish cuisine is delicious! Turkish Street Food was so delicious in Istanbul, I couldn't stop eating! I ate Turkish dumplings (Manti) and then stuffed orange mussels with herbed rice and currants and pine nuts (Midye dolma). Please like: facebook.com/foodrangin
In Istanbul, I tried many street foods and cuisines. Turkish cuisine brought me a lot of joy during my 3 week stay, so I decided to first film these dumplings alongside the stuffed mussels. BEAUTIFUL!
I went to both locations with my local friend who also filmed the entire eating process and gave the recommendations about where to eat this delicious Turkish cuisine.
The first location was at Bodrum Manti Cafe, eating traditional antolian dumplings.
Address: Arnavutköy 1. Cadde No.111, (0212) 263 29 18
And the second location was near Ortakoy market!
After eating the dumplings, I was pretty full, but needed to eat some street food, so we went for Midye Dolma, beautiful stuffed mussels that can be found on many street corners in Istanbul.
This doner kebab is a classic Turkish Food, a favourite of Istanbul locals. There is so many istanbul foods to try, but this one was one of my first. It was juicy and dripping red juice as the chef cut away layer after layer of heavenly lamb. You can find this as a turkish street food on the corners or you can have it at high class restaurants overlooking the city. I went for the middleground, and went to an average place that was recommended by a local friend.
In actuality, he told me that he has had better doner, but we had to settle for this one because the place with the best doner was closed for ramadan. As my first try of doner kebab and one of my first tries of Istanbul food, I was really happy with the outcome. Juicy, nice lamb flavour, just the right amount of fat, a little crunchy from pickles, and a good amount of mayo to give it that nice extra kick. BOOM!
The only complaint I had was the wrap was a little too much bread, I like a full mouthful of meat and less bread, but this had like half and half.
This restaurant was in besiktas. The famous place for doner that we wanted to go was here:
Karadeniz Pide ve Döner, Beşiktaş Merkez
This place was right across the street from it.

Turkish Food Tour in Istanbul - BEST Kebabs of My Life, AMAZING Seafood, and Turkish Ice Cream!
►Check out my Istanbul Travel Food Guide:
►Subscribe to my videos:
►Camera gear I use:
The first thing we did in the morning in Istanbul was drive over to Beşiktaş to eat an amazing Turkish food breakfast at a restaurant called Çakmak Kahvaltı Salonu. From there we took the ferry across the Bosphorus to Kadiköy, where we had an incredible Turkish seafood meal for lunch. Finally, we enjoyed some Turkish ice cream, and the show, and had the most incredible kebab I’ve ever had in my life at Zübeyir Ocakbaşı Restaurant. It was an amazing day of Turkish food in Istanbul!
1:27 Turkish breakfast at Çakmak Kahvaltı Salonu - For breakfast we headed to Beşiktaş, one of my favorite areas of Istanbul, and went to a restaurant known for serving breakfast. The breakfast was amazing, and I ate a dish of eggs with beef and butter. The side dishes were also fantastic. Total price - 29 TL ($9.73)
7:40 Boat to Kadiköy and Kadiköy Market - During our trip so far to Istanbul, we hadn’t had a chance to go to the Asian side of Istanbul. So today, we took the ferry over to Kadiköy pier on the Asian side across the Bosphorus. The views of Istanbul from the Bosphorus were stunning. On the other side, the main thing I wanted to do was explore Kadiköy Market, which was every bit as colorful as I had imagined. The fresh vegetables and seafood were fantastic, and I tried a cup of pickle juice.
1 Week Ago in Mumbai:
12:45 Seafood lunch at Balıkçı Lokantası Restaurant - Of all the meals I ate in Istanbul, this was one of my personal favorites, being a seafood lover. Not a far walk from the market, we went to a local family run seafood restaurant called Balıkçı Lokantası Restaurant. The owners were really friendly, and I ordered a plate of hamsi (which are anchovies), and I’m not sure of the name of the other dish, but I got Black Sea salmon braised in olive oil and butter I think with herbs and spices. It was one of the best Turkish foods I ate the entire trip to Istanbul. Wow, it was amazing.
20:50 Turkish Ice Cream - After spending some time exploring the Asian side of Istanbul, we took the ferry back to the European side, and since Istiklal Street was on our route, we stopped to have Turkish ice cream. You also see Turkish ice cream vendors playing with their customers, but when you’re the victim, it’s so confusing and funny. They have some serious skills playing with Turkish ice cream. Do you like Turkish ice cream?
23:49 Zübeyir Ocakbaşı Restaurant - For our final Turkish food meal of the day, we headed over to Zübeyir Ocakbaşı Restaurant. Ocakbaşı is a type of Turkish grill, and they served all sorts of different meat included kebabs and lamb chops in particular. We also got a bunch of side dishes and they cooked the kebabs and lamb chops right in front of us within the center of the restaurant. The kebab was the best I’ve ever had in my mouth, with an amazing mixture of minced meat and spices. Total price - 100 TL ($33.55). Thank you to David from for the recommendation.

We're in Istanbul, Turkey! This is one of our favourite cities and we've spent 2 months eating our way around Istanbul to create this series. This 4 part series is about showing you the best Istanbul street food and hunting down local food and heritage Turkish shops and restaurants which are Istanbul icons. Watch our previous Istanbul series here:
This is our third Istanbul food video. We start with tantuni, a popular Istanbul street food which comes from the southern town of Mersin. Made up of fried diced beef, parsley, onions and spice all wrapped up in a soft lavas- this is a tasty snack, simple but full of flavour. Next up we head into the laneways of Beyoglu to find a small stall outside a butcher shop where you can eat kelle tandir or roasted sheep's head. Onwards for pudding! Milk puddings play a rich part in Turkey's food culture and date back to the Ottoman empire where puddings were often made with shredded chicken and cornflour. This tradition has continued and we eat a chicken and milk pudding called kazandibi and sütlaç, a milky rice pudding from a restaurant that's famous for their puddings. Finally we head for one of our favourite Turkish meals- meze! Mezze is made up of a number of small savoury plates- both hot and cold which you graze on as you drink. We order raki- Turkey's national spirit and share a number of small plates from hamsi (anchovies) to dips.
We hope you enjoyed this Istanbul street food tour! Thanks for watching and if you want to see more content like this don't forget to subscribe.#turkishfood #istanbulstreetfood #istanbulfood

Day 8: Istanbul, Turkey - On Day 8, we flew on Turkish Airlines and from Muscat to Istanbul. The flight on Turkish Airlines was fantastic, and I had my first ever Turkish breakfast while in the sky. We then checked into The Ritz-Carlton hotel, and had some amazing Istanbul street food kofte for lunch. Istanbul is a city that I’ve always wanted to visit, and I can’t wait to explore and eat more Turkish food!
0:15 Turkish Breakfast on Turkish Airlines - To begin this day and video my wife and I were on a flight with Turkish Airlines (member of Star Alliance) from Muscat, Oman to Istanbul, Turkey. Turkish Airlines is an amazing airlines, and on business class they served us Turkish breakfast since we happen to fly into Istanbul early in the morning. Bread, olives, cheese, honey, and then the main dish included eggs and vegetables. Great flight with Turkish Airlines!
2:42 Istanbul Atatürk Airport - We arrived to Istanbul very early in the morning and after grabbing our bag, we found the bus outside the terminal to go to Taksim Square. The bus cost 11 TL ($3.73) per person.
4:57 The Ritz-Carlton, Istanbul - Marriott Hotels sponsored my stay in Istanbul, and it was an honor to have the opportunity to stay at the The Ritz-Carlton, Istanbul, which is located just a 5 minute walk from Taksim Square, with a fantastic view of the Bosphorus. We got all checked in, and the room was fantastic.
7:44 Istanbul Street Food - Kofte Sandwich Stall - After taking a little rest in the hotel and drinking some coffee, Ying and I were both pretty hungry. There’s a small Istanbul street food stall that serves amazing grilled kofte, just down the street from The Ritz-Carlton, Istanbul, and that’s exactly where we headed, right at lunch time. Before ever arriving I could smell the aroma of the meat on the grill and then I could see the colorful display of peppers and parsley surrounding the grill as well. I ordered a kofte sandwich, and after toasting the bread, he added in a bunch of little meat kofte patties, some tomatoes and onions and peppers, seasoned with some spices and chili powder and handed it to me. For 10 TL ($3.40) for sandwich and drink, this was about as good as it could possibly get for Istanbul street food! Wow it was so good.
12:17 Taksim Square and Turkish Coffee at Mandabatmaz (Istiklal Street) - After that amazing kofte sandwich, we continued walking through Taksim Square, one of the most famous landmarks of Istanbul and then on to the walking Istiklal street. The highlight for me was stopping at Mandabatmaz for a cup of the most amazing Turkish coffee I’ve ever had. Turkish coffee - 5 TL ($1.70).
17:04 Fish and Meat House - At this point Ying and I were starting to get really sleepy - we hadn’t really slept the night before. So we stopped for an early dinner at Fish and Meat House to have some grilled fish. I had the grilled sea bream, which was simple and plain but excellently fresh and cooked perfectly. The salad was also delicious. Total price for everything - 74 TL ($25.12).
