BABY TURTLE RELEASE IN BALI - Turtle Conservation and Education Centre Serangan
Turtle Conservation And Education Center( TCEC) is on Serangan island of Bali. TCEC was developed as part of the Comprehensive strategy to eradicate illegal turtle trading on the island.
There are four fundamental aspects to the center including putting a definitive end to turtle trade, by encouraging the public not to consume the turtle products (religious use or otherwise) and to support turtle Conservation in general; providing turtles for rituals without their killing and monitoring turtle size and number, so that their use can be strictly controlled and regulated; offering employment opportunities for locals from Serangan; and finally acting as watchdog for turtle trade - in Serangan in particular and Bali in general.
The center also directly helps to protect turtles; e.g., by hosting injured animals, collecting nests from tourist beaches and buying eggs from locals ( prevent them from being consumed). The eggs are bred at the center and the hatchlings are raised for about one month and then released into freedom. Out of the seven sea turtle species, three are kept and raise at the center.
At Turtle Conservation And Education Center is possible to get personally involved. For a small donation you can adopt your own baby turtle and give it back to nature with your own hands.

What’s not to like about seeing cute baby turtles being given a good start in life and older injured ones nursed back from ill-health?
The Turtle Conservation and Education Centre (TCEC) at Serangan Island south of Sanur is doing both those things plus the important job of educating both the local community and schoolkids to help end the turtle trade and support conservation. Turtle meat (and eggs) has long being consumed in Bali, and is still used in certain religious rituals, by employing and educating locals they hope this will be past tense.
Serangan Island is no longer an “island”, land has been reclaimed and now it’s just a bump on the coastline (ahhh, we remember the days when you could only go by boat...), and the area is somewhat developed, but local turtles still think its a good place to lay their eggs (mostly between July and October), the centre collects the eggs from the busy tourist beaches, and raises the hatchling until they are ready to start the big journey into the ocean alone, know in turtle conservation speak as “the lost years”.
The centre keeps the young turtles for one month to give them a little bit of an edge, and holds back any runts or sickly hatchlings until they are a bit stronger (whether they should be released as soon as they are hatched, is cause for debate in turtle conservation circles but TCEC follows advice from The Turtle Hospital, Florida USA), and this gives you (yes you, dear viewer) the opportunity to “adopt a turtle”.
Sorry you can’t take one home, but for 150,000 rupiah you can take part in their release into the sea.

Established on a land of 2.4 ha, the TCEC is trying to support the community of Serangan to find the alternatives beside illegal turtle business. TCEC supported by WWF, Governor Bali, The Major of Denpasar's Municipality authorities, the Provincial Nature Resources Conservation Agency, and the local community.
Along with Tanjung Benoa village, Serangan island have for decades been the largest black market for the sea turtle meat and products, as well as a home base for hundreds of turtle poacher's ships that sail as far as Derawan in East Kalimantan and the Bird Head of Papua regions. So massive was the trade and poaching that they had not only destroyed the sea turtle population around Bali but also inflicted a devastating ecological impact on various regions in Indonesia.
On its heyday up to the year of 2000, the massive business could ship over 30,000 turtles per year onto the island. A combination of adaptive strategies, fine- tuned advocacy and relentless down-to-earth community empowerment programs carried out by WWF and the local authority of Bali in recent years, have not only managed to significantly reduce the number of trafficked turtles but also to mobilize growing support from the local, thus, gradually alienating the big turtle traders.
The Centre's conservation reach extends over to the neighbouring island of Java, where efforts are under way to protect a major nesting beach that is regularly pilfered by turtle egg traders. Some of the Centre's shelled residents hatched right here, their nests safely relocated from Java. Of these, some will be released when they have reached 40 cm or so in length, while others will be provided for religious ceremonies - without being killed. For better or worse, the trajectory of Serangan remains tightly intertwined to the fate of marine turtles. But out of a shell-shocked tourism industry, teetering turtle populations, and the goodwill and enthusiasm of Serangan people who care, something quite beautiful indeed could emerge.

WEEK 3 // Turtle Conservation, diving & our journey to Borneo
Hello from West Bali/ Java! This was our last week of holidays before starting our full-time work with the conservation NGO, Friends of the National Parks Foundation. We have been taking language classes and hung out with my Mum, who has been visiting from Australia. We also went diving and checked out a turtle conservation centre before making the long journey over to Borneo (Kalimantan).

Serangan Turtles
Serangan has a special resonance for turtles. But turtles once benefited Serangan in a different way – by laying eggs on the island’s beaches, attracting thousands of tourists who came to see hatchlings emerge from the nest and head out to sea.
The centre harnesses the potential of education, tourism, conservation and research, with a liberal sprinkling of business, to endangered turtles on Serangan.
