RAINBOW TROUT in WILLIAM LAKE [ TURTLE MOUNTAIN provincial park ] fall fishing road trip
Fishing for fall rainbow trout at william lake, in the turtle mountain provincial park of manitoba. Near the international peace gardens, killarney, and boissevain. William lake is home to some trophy brown trout, a population of rainbow trout, yellow perch and smallmouth bass.
While on the lake the game warden left us his card on our windshield in the parking lot :)
Nick was mainly using a lipless crankbait, and i was using berkley powerbait, rolled up into a ball, placed on a small hook attached to an 18 leader then split shot weight then main line. The bait floats up, weight kepps it near bottom where it needs to be. Fish comes and sucks it up. simple as that.
We stayed the night in hammocks in the trees of the park while it froze that night. we were white when we woke up. Thank heavens for nicks cooking skills on the boat. only thing missing was a piping hot cup of coffee.
Finished work a bit late that day, so hastily getting out on the road i forgot the landing net. Luckily for us, we had a friend along the way who was willing to lend his to us for the weekend in return for a 2L bottle of pepsi (it was a friday after 5 afterall)
Nick also managed to hook into a few perch while out there and we ran into local fishing celebrities mack macmulligan and noah messner.
First ever fishing video Nick and I made. @nickvd24
first of many, only gets better from here.

MB GeoTour 15 – Falcon Creek Trail
(15-27-08-16E1: NTS 52E11NW; NAD 83, Zone 15U, 331568E, 5506886N)
The Falcon Creek Self-guiding Trail in Whiteshell Provincial Park shows the typical terrain found in the Precambrian Shield of Canada. The metavolcanic bedrock rock that can be seen along the trail is of Archean age and comprises a portion of the Superior Province, which was glaciated during the Pleistocene, leaving glacial erratics on the surface of the bedrock. Also found along the trail is a prospector’s pit probably for gold.

MB GeoTour 5 - Mount Nebo roadside outcrop of Upper Cretaceous Millwood
(04-18-04-06W1; NTS 62G08SW; NAD 83, Zone 14U, 552853E, 5460845N)
Mount Nebo is a typical Millwood butte in the Morden-Miami area, which shows the distinctive cauliflower- or popcorn-weathering of the non-calcareous greenish-grey Upper Cretaceous Millwood Member. Midway up the butte, near-horizontal brown to purple manganiferous ironstone concretion layers can seen, which sometimes contains shark's teeth, bone fragments and the internal molds of the cigar-shaped squid-like fossil, called a belemnite. The butte is surrounded by the former calcium-bentonite workings of Pembina Mountain Clays Limited. The bentonite, hosted in the Pembina Member of the Pierre Shale, was used to produce an adsorbent for purifying vegetable and dirty crankcase oils, as well as in toothpaste and cosmetics.
International Peace Garden of North Dakota/Manitoba
Along the border between North Dakota and Manitoba, groups will find the International Peace Garden, an oasis of beauty nestled in the Turtle Mountains, as much a celebration of peace as natural beauty.
The 2,339-acre site spans the border between Dunseith, N.D., and Boissevian, Manitoba. It was built in 1932 as a symbol of freedom and has expanded in the ensuing decades. The most recent additions include an interpretive center, 9/11 Memorial Garden and a $2 million updating of the landscaping.

West Hawk Lake meteorite crater is situated within the Archean metavolcanic bedrock of the Precambrian Shield in southeastern Manitoba. The water-filled crater (which is the deepest lake in Manitoba) is known as West Hawk Lake. Fractures measured in the bedrock, along the Dragon Fire Self-Guiding Trail, support the meteorite impact interpretation of the origin of West Hawk Lake.
Lynx with leg stuck in trap
Officers from the Province of Manitoba's Conservation and Water Stewardship Department and City of Thompson's Animal Care and Control Program worked together Feb. 28 to successfully restrain and free this lynx caught in a fence in a yard on Riverside Drive with his front left leg caught in a soft legal trap. The trap was removed, the lynx examined and found to be essentially uninjured, and was transported to a bush area to to be released back into the wild. He had been spotted in the city on the Millennium Trail at least as early as Feb. 25 with the trap on his leg.
MB GeoTour 4 - Spencer's ditch (on private land, please do not attempt to visit)
This is a virtual stop for information purposes only, which shows 2 m of interlayered and contorted non-calcareous black shale and non-swelling white calcium-bentonite beds of the Upper Cretaceous Pembina Member of the Pierre Shale. The beds were probably disturbed by glacial push during the Pleistocene; followed by slumping after the continental ice sheet melted 11, 000 years ago. The Pembina Member overlies a thin interval of rusty non-calcareous Gammon Ferruginous Member of the same formation; and the calcareous buff-coloured and chalky upper beds of the Upper Cretaceous Boyne Member of the Carlile Formation.
