What It's Like: Admiring the Grand Canyon and Window Shopping at the Gift Shop
My sister visited me during the Fourth of July weekend. She wanted to see the Grand Canyon so I tagged along.
Before this trip, I thought the Grand Canyon was an overrated hole on the ground. Well, not really. It is an awe-inspiring hole in the ground...
The area around the Canyon is dotted with lodges where visitors can stay. If you have an RV, you can live in that. Camping is allowed too. For those who plan to stay for a long period of time, there are supermarkets, banks, and a post office.
My favorite part of the trip was the drive to the Canyon. Driving from Phoenix to the Canyon was like driving thru different regions of the United States. We drove thru a desert, a biome that looked like the African savannah, small and rocky hills, and pine forests.
Even though we just drove thru Flagstaff, I fell in love with the town. The town felt like Boulder, Colorado in terms of weather and people. It is a small town, but it did not feel redneck.
My least favorite part of the trip was driving thru the Navajo Indian Reservation on the way home at night. Navajo country was eerily empty. For a couple of hours, our Yaris was the only vehicle on a two-lane road. There were no trees. No dwellings. No people. No lampposts... Other than the paved road and our car, THERE WAS NO SIGN OF CIVILIZATION.
My sister and I got scared. Navajo country was beautiful in a raw and undisturbed way, but as New Yorkers we got agoraphobic. We weren't used to so much empty space. We weren't used to so much silence. Driving thru the reservation was like driving thru land that has been ravaged by a nuclear holocaust or a planet void of intelligent life. Something straight out of the movies. So surreal!

Scientists still don't entirely comprehend the 1.5 billion year history of the Grand Canyon; it's a story of erosion that has created one of the most breathtaking sites in America.

RV Nomad Life | Boondocking in Mojave Valley, AZ: Beautiful Scenery
We traveled west from Sedona, AZ to Oatman, AZ to a dispersed camping, BLM area in the Mojave Valley. Although we couldn't find much about the area before exploring, we were able to get out and explore, taking county road 10 all the way to Bullhead and Laughlin, NV.
We started seeing some smoke coming up from the engine bay and couldn't figure out what was causing it. We drove it to Findlay Chevrolet so they could start looking at it. The technician who came out to look at the truck said they just had a 3500 Silverado Dually that was doing the same thing. Basically, a weak clamp on the diesel line breaks and drips diesel into the exhaust. Or something similar to that. They were able to get the part ordered and it was covered under the warranty! They gave us a 2018 GMC Terrain to drive in the mean time.
We finished installing the 1600watt solar system! We will discuss the features more as we learn about them throughout our journey. It is an incredible difference to have quiet power running the household, and it has enabled us to travel the country without plugging in unless there is enough cloud cover to disrupt the charging.

Slide Rock & Cliff jump, Sedona Arizona with underwater camera
Slide Rock State Park is a state park of Arizona, USA, taking its name from a natural water slide formed by the slippery bed of Oak Creek. The park is located in Oak Creek Canyon 7 miles (11 km) north of Sedona. Slide Rock State Park is located on Coconino National Forest land and is co-managed by the Arizona State Parks agency and the U.S. Forest Service. Tall red rock formations that are typical of the region also surround the park, which contains a 43-acre (17 ha) working apple farm.
The land was first developed by Frank L. Pendley, who arrived in the canyon in 1907 and acquired title to the land under the Homestead Act in 1910. Pendley developed an irrigation system (which is still in use today) and planted an apple orchard in 1912. The state completed a road through the canyon in 1914, and Pendley built rustic tourist cabins in 1933 that in part survive today. Several films were shot in the area: Angel and the Badman (1946), Broken Arrow (1950), Drum Beat (1954), and Gun Fury (1953).
The park was purchased by Arizona State Parks from the Arizona Parklands Foundation on July 10, 1985, and dedicated as Slide Rock State Park in October 1987. The Pendley Homestead Historic District was accepted onto the National Register of Historic Places on December 23, 1991. The apple farm is one of the few homesteads still preserved in Oak Creek Canyon.
There are three hiking trails in Slide Rock State Park: Pendley Homestead Trail (.25 miles), Slide Rock Route (.3 miles), and Clifftop Nature Trail (.25).
Slide Rock State Park attracted 254,584 visitors in 2005 and is one of the most visited tourist attractions in Arizona.
