Ueno Park (上野公園 Ueno Kōen) is a spacious public park in the Ueno district of Taitō, Tokyo, Japan. The park was established in 1873 on lands formerly belonging to the temple of Kan'ei-ji. Amongst the country's first public parks, it was founded following the western example as part of the borrowing and assimilation of international practices that characterizes the early Meiji period. The home of a number of major museums, Ueno Park is also celebrated in spring for its cherry blossoms and hanami. In recent times the park and its attractions have drawn over ten million visitors a year, making it Japan's most popular city park.

☆Bits of knowledge〜Hanazono Inari Shrine〜

You must have heard of Fushimi Inari Taisha in Kyoto, which is a famous sightseeing spot among people from all over the world. Senbon Torii in the picture above attracts travelers and its name literally means thousands of vermilion torii gates. It gets you in the world of Japanese mystery.

There might be people who are going to Tokyo but don’t have the time or money to go all the way down to Kyoto. Well, here’s a spot just for you here in Tokyo.

There is a shine in Tokyo that gives you the same mysterious atmosphere as Fushimi Inari Taisha without visiting Kyoto. It is called Hanazonoinari Shrine inside Ueno Park

Ueno Park (上野公園, Ueno Kōen) is a large public park next to Ueno Station in central Tokyo. The park grounds were originally part of Kaneiji Temple, which used to be one of the city's largest and wealthiest temples and a family temple of the ruling Tokugawa clan during the Edo Period. Kaneiji stood in the northeast of the capital to protect the city from evil, much like Enryakuji Temple in Kyoto.

APRIL 5, 2018—This is the second part of our visit to Ueno Park in Taito, Tokyo on the very same day we arrived in Japan. Haven't watched that video? Check it out here:

It was already dusk and quite chilly when we accomplished our mission to see the cherry blossoms in Ueno Park. We were to go to Shibuya later in the evening but we figured that we can spend at least an hour more in Ueno Park, without knowing exactly what else there was to do there. So where do we go?

The museums as well as the zoo were no longer options because it was already quite late. They were probably all close by that time.

We walked aimlessly for a few minutes and then saw the answer to our question. a street food strip!

The strip apparently comes to life only after dark so it was just coming to life when we arrived. A few people are checking out the stores but the place was still generally empty. The vendors are mostly just preparing their wares.A few are already starting to cook some of the food they're selling so we figured we can already try some. The whiff of fresh meat and fish in the grillers is starting to permeate the air enough to get us hooked.

This is a short video presentation of our time enjoying street food, Tokyo style, inside UENO park. Enjoy watching.

UENO PARK CHERRY BLOSSOM TOKYO 2018

Ueno Park is a spacious public park in the Ueno district of Taito, Tokyo, Japan. The park was established in 1873 on lands formerly belonging to the temple of Kaneiji.

This large park is a favorite destination of Tokyo residents, and within can be found many of the city's main attractions including the Tokyo National Museum, Ueno zoo and the National Museum of Western Art.

It is one of Tokyo's most popular and lively cherry blossom spots with more than 1000 cherry trees lining its central pathway. The cherry blossoms are usually in bloom during late March and early April and attract large numbers of hanami (cherry blossom viewing) parties.

☆Bits of knowledge〜Kiyomizu Kannon-do〜

In 1868, a massive battle took place on the grounds of Kaneiji Temple between the armies of the Tokugawa shogunate and the Satsuma-Choshu Alliance, who supported the restoration of imperial rule. The outcome of this battle was twofold. Firstly, the Tokugawa forces were defeated, leading to the end of the Tokugawa shogunate and the beginning of the Meiji period. Secondly, many of the temple’s building were destroyed, leaving behind only a few original structures dating back to 1625.

One of the structures that survived the battle and was carefully preserved is the Kiyomizu Kannondo. Now on the re-purposed grounds of Ueno Park, formerly of Kaneiji Temple, visitors can see its architecture which dates back to 1631. In terms of its design, those who have been to Kyoto will see its resemblance to Kiyomizudera temple. Part of its uniqueness is a wooden balcony which extends over the hillside. This is particularly lovely spot as it has vantage views over the 1,000 cherry blossom tree-lined main walkway of Ueno Park.
