Transcontinental Railroad Documentary - Documentary Films
A transcontinental railroad is a contiguous network of railroad trackage[1] that crosses a continental land mass with terminals at different oceans or continental borders. Such networks can be via the tracks of either a single railroad, or over those owned or controlled by multiple railway companies along a continuous route. Although Europe is crisscrossed by railways, the railroads within Europe are usually not considered transcontinental, with the possible exception of the historic Orient Express.
Transcontinental railroads helped open up unpopulated interior regions of continents to exploration and settlement that would not otherwise have been feasible. In many cases they also formed the backbones of cross-country passenger and freight transportation networks.
In the United States of America, a series of transcontinental railroads built over the last third of the 19th century created a nationwide transportation network that united the country by rail. The first of these, the 3,103-kilometre (1,928 mi) Pacific Railroad, was built by the Central Pacific Railroad and Union Pacific Railroad to link the San Francisco Bay at Oakland, California with the nation's existing eastern railroad network at Council Bluffs, Iowa/Omaha, Nebraska thereby creating the world's first transcontinental railroad when it opened in 1869. Its construction was made possible by the US Government under Pacific Railroad Acts of 1862, 1864 and 1867.
A transcontinental railroad in the United States is any continuous rail line connecting a location on the U.S. Pacific coast with one or more of the railroads of the nation's eastern trunk line rail systems operating between the Missouri or Mississippi Rivers and the U.S. Atlantic coast. The first concrete plan for a transcontinental railroad in the United States was presented to Congress by Asa Whitney in 1845.[2]
The world's First Transcontinental Railroad was built between 1863 and 1869 to join the eastern and western halves of the United States. Begun just before the American Civil War, its construction was considered to be one of the greatest American technological feats of the 19th century. Known as the Pacific Railroad when it opened, this served as a vital link for trade, commerce, and travel and opened up vast regions of the North American heartland for settlement. Shipping and commerce could thrive away from navigable watercourses for the first time since the beginning of the nation. Much of this line is currently used by Amtrak's California Zephyr, although some parts were rerouted or abandoned.

Union Pacific “George Bush” #4141 & “The Spirit” #1943: Sitting in the Addis Yard
This video was to honor the troops and former President George H.W. Bush.
With a last minute decision, our crew were able to arrive at Addis (outside of Baton Rouge) to see these two units right around sunset. We were fortunate to see these two units in person.

Listening is a more natural way of learning, when compared to reading. Written language only began at around 3200 BC, but spoken language has existed long ago.
Learning by listening is a great way to:
- increases imagination and understanding
- improves your listening skills
- improves your own spoken accent
- learn while on the move
- reduce eye strain

SUMMARY
=======
The Union Pacific Railroad (reporting mark UP) (or legally Union Pacific Railroad Company and simply Union Pacific) is a freight hauling railroad that operates 8,500 locomotives over 32,100 route-miles in 23 states west of Chicago and New Orleans. The Union Pacific Railroad system is the second largest in the United States after the BNSF Railway and is one of the world's largest transportation companies. The Union Pacific Railroad is the principal operating company of the Union Pacific Corporation (NYSE: UNP); both are headquartered in Omaha, Nebraska.
Union Pacific is known for pioneering multiple innovative locomotives, typically the most powerful of their era. These include members of the Challenger-type (such as the 3985, the 3977), and the Northern-type (the 844), as well as the famous Big Boy steam locomotives. Union Pacific ordered the first (diesel) streamliner, the largest fleet of turbine-electric locomotives in the world, and still owns the largest operational diesel locomotive.
The Union Pacific legacy began in 1862 with the original company, called the Union Pacific Rail Road, which was part of the First Transcontinental Railroad project, later known as the Overland Route. The railroad would subsequently be reorganized thrice: as the Union Pacific Railway (which absorbed the original in 1880), as the Union Pacific Railroad (which absorbed the Union Pacific Railway in 1897), and finally as a renamed Southern Pacific Transportation Company (which merged with Union Pacific in 1998).
The current Union Pacific corporation began in 1969 as the Southern Pacific Transportation Company, which was itself created in a reorganization of a railroad whose legacy dated to 1865. Over the years it would grow to include (among others) the Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad and the St. Louis Southwestern Railway, in addition to its eponymous railroad. The 1998 Union Pacific-Southern Pacific merger was not UP's first: Union Pacific had already merged with Missouri Pacific Railroad, the Chicago and North Western Transportation Company, the Western Pacific Railroad and the Missouri–Kansas–Texas Railroad. However, because the merger with Southern Pacific substantially changed the scope of the Union Pacific railroad, this article will refer to the unmerged system as Union Pacific (Mark I), and the merged system as Union Pacific (Mark II).
Union Pacific (Mark II)'s main competitor is the BNSF Railway, the nation's largest freight railroad by volume, which also primarily services the Continental U.S. west of the Mississippi River. Together, the two railroads have a duopoly on all transcontinental freight rail lines in the U.S.

The Golden Spike: Railroads of America 2
The Union Pacific RR and Central Pacific RR met at Promontory Summit, Utah, in 1869, uniting the continent with the driving of a symbolic golden spike. The arduous wagon journey on the Oregon Trail and Mormon Trail became a thing of the past. As northern transcontinental railroads were completed in the coming decades, steamboats on the Missouri River also faded into history.
Join us on location at the zero mile marker in Council Bluffs, Iowa, at the rocks worn down by wagons on the Oregon Trail in western Nebraska, at a Pony Express station in Central Nebraska, at the 100th Meridian in Cozad, Nebraska, and at the monument to Oliver and Oakes Ames in eastern Wyoming.

Union Pacific SD70ACes on the Pratt Sub
On April 2nd, 2010 I caught a couple of SD70ACes while getting familiar with my new Canon HFS100 camcorder. I like UPs horns on these units, and nothing sounds as nice as an EMD when they notch up.
The canon captures in avchd at full 1920x1080. I'm using Adobe CS4 to process the video. AVCHD is a new format for me and I think I'm going to enjoy it. Keep watching as I figure it out and become more familiar with the camcorder.

Union Pacific mixed freight passes Nevada, Iowa ethanol plant
Saturday, December 8, 2018, 11:13 AM. After Ericson Morris Railfan and I filmed the meet from opposite sides of the tracks at the Nevada, Iowa ethanol plant, this mixed freight came along. My regular railfanning buddy Rick had showed up meanwhile to meet Ericson too, so he took the north side of the tracks this time. Ericson's video can be seen here:

Hope everyone's new year is off to a good start, I'm gonna start 2019 with my first video of the year. Nothing fancy though :D
This was another one I was able to film before the 1943 went through on its way to Texas. Was also the first time in a while I've seen an all old school AC4400CW consist, without a GEVO and/or CTE upgrade in the mix. I'm pretty sure Ive got one more from here, a double stack I believe, so that'll be next week. This Sunday will be the final part of the Colorado Joint Line Ops Session. So keep an eye out for that.
Anyway, gonna keep this short today, lot's going on, so I'm gonna end it here for now. Thanks for watching and see you next time!
