Yarra Strategic Plan – Suburban Yarra 50-year vision
In February 2017 Melbourne Water was tasked with the development of the Yarra Strategic Plan to enable the Yarra River to be managed and cared for as one living and integrated entity. A key feature of the plan was to include long-term community vision for the river. The vision must be developed with the community to ensure they reflect the community’s priorities for the river.
Beginning in September 2017, Melbourne Water undertook an extensive two phase engagement approach to work with the community to write 50-year visions for each of the Yarra’s four reaches (upper rural, lower rural, suburban and inner-city) and an overarching vision for the whole river.
This consultation culminated in a Community Assembly in early 2018, when 24 passionate Victorians drawn from all parts of the Yarra’s 242km length, came together with representatives from the Wurundjeri Tribal Council to consider input from the community. They then wrote the five visions below to provide the building blocks for how the river and its land are used and managed in future, to ensure the Yarra remains a proud part of Victoria’s identity.

Our Yarra River, Birrarung provides a continuous network of protected parklands, providing inclusive access to all.
A covenant of custodianship is adopted by private landowners along the reach, embedding a culture of respect and responsibility for river values.
The river corridor provides a healthy natural environment, enabling swimming, relaxation and other recreational activities. Importantly, it also supports a flourishing natural ecosystem, including networks of billabongs and wetlands, for indigenous plants and animals to thrive.
This is a valued place of connection to Wurundjeri culture and community, with a network of hubs of learning, play and celebration. It benefits from a united and integrated approach to governance and land management, guided by the wisdom and practices of Traditional Owners, keeping culture not just in the past but alive into the future.

Fletchers Yarra Ranges - 1411-1413 Mount Dandenong-Tourist Road - Ingrid Wilde
1920s Playground of Melbourne's Rich and Famous
Rarely does the opportunity present itself to become the custodian of one of the grand original landholdings of the Dandenong Ranges and if these walls could talk, they would regale a story rich in history, suited to this home's impressive scale, set amongst 6.5 acres of sun bathed private gardens and surrounding land.
To enter the gates of Penrith, is to experience a sense of healing and harmony which the current owner refers to as The Magic Faraway Tree.
Following its glamorous days as a private home, hosting soirees and week end parties for Melbourne's privileged elite, Penrith became an exclusive B&B, utilizing the 5 generously appointed bedrooms with ensuite bathrooms, decorated with original art deco features, some sourced from Burnham Beeches. Today, as a private executive residence, these details have been enjoyed as the ultimate in comfort and space. The tree top views from the main bedroom, with it's own sitting room, are simply stunning.
The open plan kitchen/casual dining area would tell tales of lavish parties supported by two separate butler's pantries. If catering yourself is more your style, these pantries may lend way to a generous kitchen extension with views to the back garden deck and sunken BBQ area.
Taking advantage of its beautiful surrounds, the massive lounge and dining area, comfortably set for 10 guests, enjoys a large open fire and overlooks the in-ground swimming pool. The patio off the dining area has wind-sensor awnings, providing desirable shade in the summer, while still being sensitive to Hills weather by automatically closing if the wind picks up.
With two bedrooms upstairs, and a further three with separate entry downstairs, this house has a floorplan adaptable to any family or business (STCA). Also downstairs is an additional sitting room, currently being used as a home theatre, plus laundry room with options for a cellar, and large linen press.
Practical features such as instant gas hot water, hydronic heating and reverse cycle systems have not been overlooked. Add to this the ambiance of an open fire and your comfort is complete.
The property is a combination of gardens and acreage, which includes massive garden shed and chicken run. Three spring-fed water tanks are a generous addition and may be suited for the eco-minded contemplating self-sufficiency.
Penrith is ready to start a new chapter in its life story, so inspect today for your chance to secure something special.

Inside The Square — The Story Behind Federation Square
Imagine the nightmare of constructing a $450 million civic and cultural landmark to a radical design, not a right angle in sight, by architects with no previous building experience. This was the bold challenge to establish a brand new public square in Melbourne, Australia.
In 1997, the Victorian Government paved the way for one of the great civic spaces of the 21st century on top of the railway yards which divided the city of Melbourne from the river. An international competition was held, and Federation Square was awarded to two unknown London-based architects who, incredibly, had never built anything.
Despite years of teaching and running their own architectural practice, the unorthodox designs of Peter Davidson and Don Bates had literally never left the drawing board. Now they were being asked to build Australia’s biggest public project since the Opera House. And, like the Opera House, there were a plethora of issues and obstacles to overcome; political interference, budget blowouts, delays, shoddy workmanship, and strained relationships.
Chronicling the building of Federation Square, Australia’s most ambitious architectural project, ‘Inside The Square’ looks at what it takes to realise a vision of this magnitude.
Features appearances by Peter Davidson, Don Bates, Tony Cosma, Tony Hodder, Jim Berry, Peter Seamer, Stan Liacos, Dimity Reed, Charles Jencks, Genevieve Lally, Archie Laing, Frances Lindsay, Paul Mathis, Philip Goad, Tony Allen, and many more close to the project.
