Zoroastrians celebrate birthday of their prophet

Zoroastrians in northern Iraq have been celebrating the birthday of their prophet.
Zoroastrianism is one of the earliest known faiths in the world and the official religion of pre-Islamic Iran.
STORYLINE:
Performing a traditional Kurdish dance, these people follow the ancient monotheistic religion of Zoroastrianism.
And today there is particular reason to celebrate since it is their prophet Zoroaster's birthday.
Zoroastrians believe that he was born on 26th March in a village in the mountains near Uremia Lake in Iran.
The Zoroastrians have one small temple, known as the Zoroastrian house, in Sulaymaniyah in northern Iraq.
Followers hold regular meetings there and today it is the venue for their prophet's birthday party.
I congratulate the birthday of Zoroaster to all the Zoroastrians in the world. Today is the birthday of truth. He was born in the mountains of Mesopotamia, in a village near the Uremia Lake, among the Mugh tribes. However, Zoroaster was looking with an open mind to the existence of God, says Asawan Qadrok Ahmad, the Zoroastrian priest at today's event.
Worshippers often pray together on the mountainsides overlooking Sulaymaniyah.
Historians don't know for certain when Zoroaster, the religion's prophet, lived, putting his birth somewhere the 18th and 7th century BC.
He is thought to have lived in what is now Iran.
It's thought that Zoroastrianism was widely followed in the area, before shrinking with the rise of Islam in the seventh century.
Zoroastrianism is a monotheistic faith with a focus on good deeds to ensure a happy life and, at the end of days, the final victory of good over evil.
It has recently been recognised by the Kurdistan Regional Government, and boasts a representative in the region's Ministry of Religions.
We offer our nicest and warmest greetings to the Kurdish people, the Zoroastrian people, to the whole of the Zoroastrian religion, and also to all Iraqi people, says Awat Hussam Tayib, Zoroastrian representative in the Ministry of Endowments and Religious Affairs.
No reliable figures exist on the number of worldwide Zoroastrians but one estimate puts it between 100,000 and 200,000, with most of them living in India and the United States.
