The Best Town in Alaska for Wildlife Viewing!
Valdez, Alaska in an RV is the best way to experience this small ocean side town. Valdez is nestled among fjords on Prince William Sound. You probably know it as the primary location affected by the Exxon Valdez oil tanker spill in the 80s.

It was the perfect spot for us to hide out for a week between Tim’s crazy Dalton adventure and the arrival of Tim’s parents the following week in to Anchorage.
It was SO NICE to finally be next to the ocean. After being in an RV for months driving through the center of North America we finally reached the coast. This finally felt like the RV experience we had been looking for. We had all the comforts of “home” as well as adventure and beautiful views right outside our door.
Valdez is a very very small town with only a few restaurants, a Best Western hotel, and LOADS of RV parks.
Somehow we managed to call the same day and get a spot right on the water at the Bear Paw RV Resort.
We had to move spots due to availability after a few days in to town, but there’s not a bad RV spot around. Every where you look you are surrounded by mountains, waterfalls and bald eagles.
It was really nice here catching up on work. The fact that Valdez Alaska is one of the wettest places in north america meant we spent a lot of time inside. We didn’t do much vlogging… hence the abnormal amount of voiceover in this episode, but we want to show what Valdez has to offer as it was one of our favorite places in the state.
It’s popular to take a day cruise out to the near by the Columbia Glacier. We opted out mostly because we were using this week to work and it was a little long to leave Pepper at home. We did love all of the other things to do in town.
Our favorite was the Solomon Gulch Fish Hatchery.
Every year this hatchery releases approximately 230 million pink salmon and 2 million coho salmon. The fish later return to the hatchery by entering the facility using a fish ladder which carry the fish from Prince William Sound “up stream”. This process is known as ocean ranching and occurs every year!
The amount of fish here was just astounding. This of course made the entire area a popular destination for other wild life.
Just up the road at other river inlets is a popular place to spot our favorite animal right off the side of the road. BEAR
There’s only one road in and out of Valdez so you’ll definitely won’t miss Bridal veil falls and the X glacier on your way in and out, unless of course you’ll be riding the ferry on the Alaska Marine highway which can take you down to south east Alaska or up closer to Anchorage.
It was time to head to Anchorage where we met up with a couple who had found us through our New Zealand videos. Fortunately for us they happen to be the owners of Double Shovel Brewing in Anchorage and were wonderful hosts for the evening.
So at this time, Double Shovel isn’t on Harvest Hosts yet, but there is one harvest host in Anchorage. We would definitely recommend checking them out because, surprisingly enough, downtown Anchorage had THE WORST RV options we’ve seen the entire trip.
Another big thanks to Galen and Morgan who made our visit to Anchorage very memorable, or not… if you know what I mean.
Stay tuned for Sunday where we head to Seward with Tim’s parents and kayak to the Aialik Glacier with one of the funniest people we met on the trip…

VALDEZ ALASKA - World's Deepest Snow
Valdez, Alaska is the land of perpetual H2O. The Chugach Mountains surrounding Valdez are the snowiest tract of coastal mountains on Earth and contain the greatest concentration of glacial ice in Alaska thanks to the consistently deep annual snow accumulation.
This land is defined by ocean, rivers, ice, waterfalls, glaciers, snow, mist, islands, forests, rain, mountains. Water is life, and it's hard to find a place that has more water than Valdez.
For outdoors enthusiasts Valdez offers year round adventures: skiing, snowboarding, snowmobiling, ice climbing, mountaineering, glacier trekking, rock climbing, sea kayaking, boating, stand up paddle boarding, skate skiing, cross country skiing, snowshoeing, and more.

The Town of Valdez
Valdez is a small town full of bunnies. It’s easy to walk or ride bikes around. Stop at the waterfront to look for sea otters eating crabs.
Eagle’s Rest Campground
Eagle’s Rest was a convenient campground but a little loud. Our site was right next to a 24-hour car wash and a Safeway open 4am - midnight. Look at the map when choosing your site and avoid those areas. You could walk and bike to everything in town from here though.

WATCH FROM THE BEGINNING |
We live in a 33 foot fifth wheel tiny home camper that we are currently traveling the USA in! It is an alternative lifestyle we find that it brings us the most freedom. Living in a RV full time was never something we planned to do. Instead we jumped right into it. In a matter of 30 days. We bought a RV and the following day bought a truck to tow with!

Worthington Glacier Hike - Northern Ridge (Right Side), Valdez, Alaska
This video is NOT of the Worthington Glacier Ridge Trail which is a steep marked trail to the left, this video, which has both pictures and embedded videos, is of a very aggressive hike that follows up Worthington Glacier along the northern ridge (Right side when looking straight at the Glacier), it uses cables to cross the water and then climbs up to the top of the glacier with no trail markings.
Use extreme caution if you decide to go up the right side using the cables!! This hike had some difficult sections and I would highly recommend a buddy system.
Worthington Glacier State Recreational Site is near Thompson Pass, 28 miles northeast of Valdez on the Richardson Highway.
This site is now operated by Valdez Adventure Alliance, previously known as Levitation 49 according to Alaska Department of Natural Resources - Division of Parks & Outdoor Recreation web page.

I flew my drone in Valdez Alaska and it was the clearest I've ever seen
Allison Point, Valdez, AK is an amazing place to see Salmon, Bears, Seals, Otters, and more. Usually it is covered by a marine cloud and fog layer. I got lucky at sunset on one of the clearest days of all time. I had my 3dr solo drone ready and my GoPro attached to it. Shot in 2.7k at 60fps uploaded at 1080p. Hope you guys enjoy a little bit of Alaska. I love sharing my experiences with everyone.

Valdez Glacier Alaska Lake Ice Series 1 2019 4K
Various, artfully framed and selected shots across 6 weeks of time. This year, with record amounts of heat and drought across Southcentral Alaska, the rivers were high all summer, but not from rain: massive amounts of ice have been lost all across the state. Roughly 1,500 feet of the Valdez Glacier shattered apart this summer, creating a mesmerizing collage of jagged ice formations, rock covered slopes, and deadly ice caves (three tourists were killed in an unknown accident toward the end of July). It's a dynamic, enchanting place. We don't often think about how truly dangerous our excursions on the lake can be, since people haven't gotten hurt in recent memory up until this year. We've had a few close calls ourselves in the past, after all. But when people get hurt in the vast wilderness, they should not be criticized, they should be understood. Hopefully this video will help others understand that urge to get lost within the mind-blowing majesty of the world, an urge that sometimes draws us too far in, always unintentionally.
I also feel that this is a very appropriate time to introduce the artist who generously allowed the use of their song for this video: Big Hearts, Small Minds by The Band Roads. I don't generally like acoustic music or lyrics, but the icy clarity of his vocals caught my attention, as well as the soul-felt lyrics in all of his music. I thought it was Owl City, but it was Ian Vidovic of Roads. :) You can feel his passion through the lyrics, and that passion not only carries over from his amazing sound but also to his generous creative commons usage. As he says in regards to this track: I would describe my music as Indie, Alternative, Pop. I do have other genres too but for this song I would say its those 3. My favorite bands are Death Cab For Cutie and Coldplay.
If he keeps making music, we can keep using it, so check him out at:

RVING FROM SEWARD TO VALDEZ ALASKA
???? Hop on the KYD email list and get a weekly email with even more inspiration
Last week we left you on a cliffhanger when Marc grabbed the hot pan. Everything was fine, just surprisingly hot! This episode opens with Caleb's confessions on dad's cooking with mom gone...but not hearing the answer was even funnier.
This episode starts with salmon fishing in Seward, AK with KYD Insider Dave Downs. This is our last fishing experience of SN5. Then the boys drive from Seward to Anchorage to pick-up Trish before taking off to Valdez...which just might be the most beautiful city in Alaska, not to mention the most beautiful drive. This is only part 1 of Valdez as next week includes a stunning experience on the LuLu Belle.

Back To The Present: Snowboarding In Valdez, Alaska - Part 1
As the first splitboarder to earn full ACMG lead guiding certification and a handpicked heli guide for pro snowboarders from Travis Rice to Jeremy Jones, Scott Newsome is a bit of a legend in the Canadian snowboard ranks. Newsome was raised in Lake Louise, Alberta, and earned his stripes as a Whistler-based pro, then migrated back to the stacked peaks, unlimited touring, and deep snowfalls of the Canadian interior, where he started his guiding career at Cat Powder, his family’s Revelstoke-based cat-skiing operation.
Newsome’s long splitboard rise through the ACMG Guide ranks began in the skintrack mecca of Rogers Pass and culminated nearly a decade later when he became the first Canadian to earn ACMG full guide certification in 2011. His current day job is VP of Operations and Lead Guide for Eagle Pass Heli, a heli-skiing op with 270,000 acres of prime stacked tenure in the heart of the Monashee Mountains, which has hosted pro film crews from Absinthe Films and Red Bull Media House to Poor Boyz Productions and Legs of Steel.
Eighteen years after he first look at the mountains of Thompson Pass in Valdez, Alaska, Scott returns to the state of the last frontier with snowboard guide, Chris Coulter, to revisit some of the peaks where Newsome cut his teeth on the pro circuit.

June is the peak of the midnight. It is past 9 o'clock in the night and the surroundings are as bright as the daytime. But at this late hour, the shop is crowded with crowded shops. What I saw was ice cream. How do you feel about ice cream in Alaska in the summer? It's fun. It was hot today. I like ice cream on this day. The ice cream shop opens only in the summer, but till 10 pm. At this time, high school students are too busy to work part-time. I rarely work in the winter. I have to go to school and manage my grades. On a deep night in the midnight sun, the ice cream in Alaska felt different.
