Places to see in ( Valencia - Spain ) Parque Natural de la Albufera
The Albufera, or L'Albufera de València in Valencian, is a freshwater lagoon and estuary on the Gulf of Valencia coast of the Valencian Community in eastern Spain. It is the main portion of the Parc Natural de l'Albufera de València (Valencian Albufera Natural Park), with a surface area of 21,120 hectares (52,200 acres).
The natural biodiversity of the nature reserve allows a great variety of flora and fauna to thrive and be observed year-round. Though once a saltwater lagoon, dilution due to irrigation and canals draining into the estuary and the sand bars increasing in size had converted it to freshwater by the seventeenth century.
The Valencian Albufera Nature Park and lagoon lies just 11 kilometres (6.8 mi) south of Valencia, in the municipal areas of 13 towns and four pedanies (former towns) adjoined to the capital city, these in turn lying within four comarques or counties, namely, in Horta Sud: Albal, Alfafar, Beniparrell, Catarroja, Massanassa, Sedaví and Silla; in Ribera Baixa: Albalat de la Ribera, Cullera, Sollana, Sueca and El Mareny de Barraquetes; in Ribera Alta: Algemesí; and in the County of Valencia and greater metropolitan area of València, in the pedanies of Pinedo, El Palmar, El Saler and El Perellonet. Its proximity to the capital city of the Valencian Land and easy access facilitate nature experiences and birdwatching.
Since 1990, the Valencian Albufera Nature Reserve has been included as a Ramsar Site in the list of wetlands of international importance for birds, established in the Ramsar Convention of 1971. Since 1991 the Parc Natural de l'Albufera de València has also been included in the Special Protection Areas (Zepa in Spanish).
L'Albufera is heavily dominated by Cyanobacteria, particularly Synechococcus. The natural microbial population of Albufera has been recently described.

Valencia:
The port city of Valencia is on Spain’s southeastern Orange Blossom Coast, where the Turia River meets the Mediterranean Sea. It’s known for its City of Arts and Sciences, with futuristic structures including a planetarium, an oceanarium and an interactive museum. Valencia also has several beaches, including some within nearby Albufera park, a wetlands reserve with a lake, walking trails and bird-watching.
Alicante:
Alicante is a port city on Spain’s southeastern Costa Blanca, and the capital of the Alicante province. Its old town, Barrio de la Santa Cruz, has narrow streets, colored houses and a lively nightlife scene. From here, an elevator or a steep climb leads to medieval Castillo de Santa Bárbara, set on a hilltop with sweeping views of the Mediterranean coast.
Torrevieja:
Torrevieja is a city in Spain's southeastern Alicante province, on the Costa Blanca. It’s known for its Mediterranean climate and coastline. Promenades run along its sandy, resort-backed beaches. The tiny Museo del Mar y de la Sal houses exhibits exploring the town’s fishing and salt-mining history. Inland, the Lagunas de la Mata-Torrevieja Nature Park has trails and 2 salt lakes, one pink and the other green.

Albufera Natural Park Tours
The Albufera area is home to Spain largest lake and some of the country’s most scenic wetlands and lagoons. The natural biodiversity of the area contains hundreds of native plants. Nearly 100,000 species of birds can be found as well, including some rare and endangered types. Birdwatching can be done either by land or on the water by boat.
Traditionally fisherman have been of utmost importance to the economy and culture of Albufera, with their thatched roof houses (called ‘barracas’) dotting the landscape. Rice production is also significant here, in fields surrounding the area. The marriage of the two is evident in the region’s most famous dish, paella valenciana, which is served in nearly every restaurant here.
Albufera was once a marine gulf, and is still connected to the sea by various waterways. Today it is a peaceful place to escape the city and enjoy some time immersed in nature.
Practical Info
To get to Albufera, take the number 25 bus from Valencia to either El Palmar or El Perellonet. The edge of the park is only 7 kilometers from Valencia. Albufera is great to visit year-round.

Compilation of all short videos we have filmed in Granada about birds we have seen there: Wood Pigeon eating the buds of a tree; Jackdaws flying over the cathedral, then a couple jumping on a roof, where you can see that one's leg is missing, and finally another one pecking the branches of a tree; Greay Wagtail running around a canalization of the Genil River; and lastly a couple of Spotless Starlings on a house's roof.
