Built on the site of a Roman temple, which later became a mosque the origins of the cathedral date back to the 13th century. It has various architectural styles, from the Romanesque to the baroque, as can be observed on the three doors: The main door, or Puerta de los Hierros, is baroque; the Puerta de los Apóstoles is gothic and the Puerta del Palau is Romanesque. The Miguelete belfry was built in the 13th and 14th centuries and was designed by Andrés Juliá Torre; it is octagonal, 50.85m high and built in a markedly baroque style, next to the main entrance. There is a spiral stairway inside that leads to the terrace, where there are views of the city, the countryside and the sea. The Santo Cáliz Chapel, the old Sala Capitular y de Estudios (1356) was originally a Chapter House and study and was separate from the cathedral. The Holy Chalice that according to tradition was used by Christ during the last Supper is kept inside. The Obra Nova or Balconets de Cabildo were built over three floors next to the cathedral dome and they dominate the Plaza de la Virgen. It was a renaissance work of a triple serlienne arcade.

The Metropolitan Cathedral–Basilica of the Assumption of Our Lady of Valencia, alternatively known as Saint Mary's Cathedral or Valencia Cathedral, is a Roman Catholic parish church in Valencia, Spain.
The Valencia Cathedral was consecrated in 1238 by the first bishop of Valencia after the Reconquista, Pere d'Albalat, Archbishop of Tarragona, and was dedicated by order of James I the Conqueror to Saint Mary. It was built over the site of the former Visigothic cathedral, which under the Moors had been turned into a mosque. The Valencian Gothic is the predominant architectural style of the cathedral, although it also contains Romanesque, French Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque and Neo-Classical elements.
The Valencia Cathedral contains numerous 15th-century paintings, some by local artists (such as Jacomart), others by artists from Rome engaged by the Valencian Pope Alexander VI who, when still a cardinal, made the request to elevate the Valencian See to the rank of metropolitan see, a category granted by Pope Innocent VIII in 1492.
Most of Valencia Cathedral was built between the 13th century and the 15th century, and thus its style is mainly Gothic. However, its construction went on for centuries. As a consequence there is a mixture of artistic styles, ranging from the early Romanesque, Valencian Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque and Neoclassical.

View from Micalet Tower of the Valencia Cathedral, Valencia, Spain
If you’re visiting the Valencia Cathedral, consider climbing the 207 steps of Torre del Micalet (The Micalet Tower). This 13th century bell tower takes its name from the main clock bell, el Micalet. At 167 feet tall, the view from the terrace is worth the climb, though on a warm day it can be stuffy in the tower. From the top you’ll get to see el Micalet up close. He’s one of 12 bells in the tower, dates back to 1539, and weighs in at over 24,000 pounds. You’ll also get a nice view of Valencia’s cityscape with the blue tiled domes of the cathedral and other churches nearby, and the Med Sea in the distance to the east.

One of the supposed #Holy#Chalices in the world is revered in one of this cathedral's chapels; this chalice has been defended as the true Holy Grail. This chalice with Arabic inscriptions dates from the 1st century, and was given to the cathedral by king Alfonso V of Aragon in 1436.
Valencia #Cathedral was of great importance for Iberian sacred music and had many notable composers as mestre de capella. The musicologist Josep Climent Barber (ca) (b. 1927) has conducted considerable research into the music of Valencia Cathedral.

In this video, I will be sharing part 5 of my travel series in Valencia, Spain (2016).
Day 5 in Valencia, Spain :
We took the train from Cullera to Valencia North Station and walked through Valencia. We walked through the old town visited the Cathedral, climbs the steep and spiral staircase of 207 stairs of Torre del Micalet ( Also known as El Miguelete is a gothic-style bell tower of Valncia's Cathedral) and ended our visit at Torres de Serranos. Unfortunately, we didn't go up the to see the beautiful view of the city from Torres de Serranos but it's something I'd definitely recommend.
*The quality of my phone wasn't the best, but I did the best with the tools I had. Enjoy and leave this video a thumbs up if you enjoyed it :).

The Cathedral’s magnificent bell tower is the iconic landmark of Valencia and the most recognized symbol of the city. The tower's largest bell and the one that rings the hours is also named Miguel. Construction began in 1381 and was completed in 1418. Of Gothic design, El Micalet, or El Miguelete, has an octagonal base with a perimeter equal to its height of almost 51 meters. Climbing all 207 steps up the interior spiraling staircase to experience the view is a must if you are physically comfortable doing so.

We stopped at the Cathedral here in Valencia and the architecture and history behind it is just amazing. It was a great budget friendly place to visit. We highly recommend this place as a must see!
