The valley is part of the Los Nevados National Natural Park, incorporated into the existing national park by the Colombian government in 1985. It is the principal location of the national tree and symbol of Colombia, the Quindío wax palm (Ceroxylon quindiuense), as well as a wide variety of other flora and fauna (some endangered), all of which are protected under the park's national status.
The Cocora valley is the valley of the upper reaches of the Quindío River, the principal river of the department of Quindío, located at an altitude between 1800 and 2400 meters. The valley is approximately 24 km north-east of the departmental capital Armenia, and accessed via a turn-off from the Armenia-Pereira highway, running via Boquia to the town of Salento. Vehicles (either private cars or jeep taxis from Salento) can then travel 11 km further on up into the valley as far as Cocora, a collection of campsites and restaurants - other parts of the valley can only be accessed either by hiking on the numerous trails or on horseback.
The Cocora valley is part of a larger national park, the Los Nevados National Natural Park (Spanish: Parque Nacional Natural de Los Nevados). The park covers an area of 58,000 hectares (580 km2) in total,[1] including the north-eastern part of Quindío.

It is perhaps the most important municipality for tourism in Quindío, this due to three fundamental reasons. The first, the beautiful and preserved architecture bequeathed from the Antioquia colonization; the second, the imposing Valle de Cocora or Cocora Valley, which at the landscape level is one of the most beautiful in Colombia; and the third, because of a contagious environment of peace and well-being that is immediately impregnated, is up.
To get there, take the road that connects Armenia with Pereira, making the detour to the right at km 17. Salento appears at the end of a curved road that distils through the valley of the Quindío River and passes in front of the typical inns of the corregimiento de Boquía. The so-called father of the municipalities of Quindío, was the first to be founded by the Antioqueno settlers in the mid-nineteenth century.
Located 26 km from Armenia, on the western side of the Central Cordillera and northeast of the department, Salento in Quindio Colombia, is like a historical recount of the region, as its streets reflect intact the tradition of the initial settlers. Tradition that even today many strive to preserve so that the place projects its full charm. This town Salento, has colorful houses and balconies adorned with flowers has among the residents some foreigners who some day bequeathed and decided to stay trapped by the charm of the place.
Distance from Medellín to salento quindio is 248 kms
That is why it is common to meet in any corner with Argentines, Italians, French, Americans or Spaniards; even, some of them just entered the wonderful streets of Salento, still wandering with their baggage in search of the cultural atmosphere and the wonders of the landscape.

Cocora valley, near Salento Colombia
The Cocoravalley (Spanish: Valle de Cocora) is a valley located in the department of Quindío in Colombia. The valley, which is located in the Cordillera Central, is part of the National Park Los Nevados. Here the national tree of Colombia, the Ceroxylon quindiuense or wax palm is common. They become max. 60 metres high. The valley, which lies in the Andes Mountains, is rich in more flora and fauna, many of which are threatened with extinction. The Cocora Valley is part of a natural park, designed to protect biodiversity. The valley can be reached by jeep from the nearby tourist town of Salento.
Cocora was the name of a quimbayaprinses, daughter of the cacique Acaime, whose name means star of the water. The western Pacific winds have no influence on the valley due to the protection of the mountains located more to the west. This creates a humid climate in the valley, creating a unique ecosystem of cloud forest. It rains almost daily and the average annual temperature in the valley not far from the equator is only 15°C, with a maximum of 25°C and minimum temperatures below freezing.
It's a beautiful valley and we made the walk up that's also on the map in the presentation, after which we zigzagged down steeply in the rain via about the black and white line. Downstairs I was more wet from the sweat than from the rain.
COCORA VALLEY in Colombia PART 1
Part 1 of the 2 part Cocora Valley vlog. In this video we travel to the Valle de Cocora (the Cocora Valley) in the Quindio department of Colombia. Its located about an hours drive from Pereira and right next to the beautiful, colorful colonial town of Salento.
Once here we enjoy some of the lovely scenery in this stunning drive into the Andes to check out some of the 30 meter (99 foot) tall Wax Palm trees and a fantastic restaurant called Juan B, which is rated number 3 in Tripadviser.
We also start our short trek into the Wax Palm forrest on an absolutely picturesque day.
Watch this video and checkout the Cocora Valley tours available below.
We recommend basing yourself in Pereira for 4-5 days while in Colombia. The reason is Pereira is the center of the Coffee Zone and the perfect location to take day trips to Salento, Filandia, The Cocora Valley, Otún Nature Reserve, Santa Rosa, Manizales, Armenia, and so many many more locations.
