Winter MIDGE Fly Fishing On the San Juan River Tailwater for Trout - McFly Angler Episode 3
If you haven't ever fly fished the quality waters on the San Juan River in New Mexico, you are missing out. Trout are everywhere, and its difficult not to hook a few. The problem there though is that your best bet for hooking trout is with small midges in the 28-32 size verity. Also you need to use really light tippet like 6x. Flourocarbon is best. Because the river is fished quite heavily, the trout come accustom to knowing what is a fly, and what is not, so you need to fish really light. These are not small trout, and therefor its difficult to bring them in. The small hooks rip out of their mouths, and the light tippet snaps when you put any pressure on the fish. Fighting a large trout can take you 10-20 minutes before getting it in, and by that time you have lots of chances to loose them.
I hooked 3 good sized trout on this trip, and brought in 2 of them. The 3rd one I lost never got on camera due to my batteries dying. This trip was a tough trip though even though I landed a few fish because I was struggling to get bites. I only had 3 hit all day, and I was lucky enough to bring in 2. Finally the hunt for the San Juan River trout is over, and I can move onto another river in my next series of fishing rivers.
Some would consider the San Juan to be more of a creek as its not very wide, but there are spots that are very wide and those places are slow and shallow, but there are big trout all throughout this river. I landed 2 fish, and hooked a 3rd on this trip. That third fish was just too big, and too strong to bring in. I lost him about 2 feet from landing him in the net. All around a great day fishing.
The first time I fished the San Juan must have been a once in a blue moon trip because I landed 20+ trout in about one hour. This river is considered one of the best in the United States, however its not quite like some of these rivers you see in New Zealand. There are lots of people, and its not so remote and secluded feeling. However its a great river still none the less.
Here is a list of the gear I was using and links to where you can buy them.

Haviland Lake Reflections: Time Lapse, Autumn in Colorado
In this episode of Landscape TV, Kit Frost photographed a time lapse sequence in the mountains of Colorado. This location is 16 miles north of Durango, Colorado. Best Camping Spots in Colorado, dispersed campground
Kendall Camping Area in San Juan National Forest Silverton Colorado.
Campgrounds still open between September and May have no services (water, electric, trash pick up or rest rooms). Please keep them clean and pack it out. Thanks!
South Mineral Campground is accessed by turning off U.S. Highway 550, about 3 miles west of Silverton, onto Forest Rd. 585, which heads west along South Mineral Creek. The campground is 4 miles off the highway and has 26 mostly level sites. Several camping loops and well-spaced sites are mostly shaded, but some are sunny. A few are next to the creek, and some have large parking areas. The Ice Lake Basin Trail, a strenuous, steep, and popular hike, begins across the road from the campground. It leads up above timberline to high alpine lakes surrounded by meadows of wildflowers and rocky peaks. Please stay on the trail to avoid steep, dangerous dropoffs. Dispersed camping along Forest Rd. 585 is allowed only in designated camping areas. Follow posted directions and instructions. The road to the campground is drivable by 2WD, but not far after the campground, it becomes 4WD. Driving off- road is prohibited, but many other 4WD roads in the Silverton area are open to motorized use.

[Butterfield Trail] Anza-Borrego: Font's Point, Culp Valley, & Vallecito Springs (Days 1 & 2) [4K]
The route is prolific in interest to the naturalist, the mineralogist, and all who love to contemplate nature in her wildest varieties, and throughout the whole 2,700 miles the interest is not allowed to flag. I have found the deserts teeming with curious plants and animal life, the mountain passes prolific in the grandest scenery, and the fruitful valleys suggestive on an earthly paradise; - Waterman L. Ormsby, The Butterfield Overland Mail printed in the New York Herald, Thursday, 11 November 1858.
The Butterfield Overland Mail Stagecoach Route was the first interstate system in the United States of America, and pivotal in our development as a coast-to-coast thriving economic powerhouse... it was the predecessor to the Pony Express, railways, and the interstate systems we all use today.
In April and May of 2018, I traversed a large section of the trail from Southern California to Texas. This is my account of the adventure... enjoy!
Day 1 kicked off by getting on the road, and joining my cousin and friend at Alps Village in Palm Desert. From there it was down the highway, passing the Salton Sea, and leaving the Coachella Valley behind.
I traveled to Font’s Point, one of the most iconic areas in Anza Borrego to watch a joint sunset and moonrise.
Camped at Culp Valley camping area, the highest elevation campground in the park, and enjoyed the Dark Sky night sky.
Finally linked up with the trail and pushed farther down the road to the location of the Vallecito Stage Station, my first stop at an actual station from the original trail!
