Papua New Guinea St. Anna's Secondary School in Port Moresby
Children of various ages at recess at St. Anna's secondary school in Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea. They have to wear school uniforms, but the school is government funded and free for the kids. Education is a big problem in PNG with only 60-70% of kids going to school because of poverty and having to make money at an early age to support their families. This leads to high rates of illiteracy, crime, and further unemployment. Hopefully this will begin to change with the younger generation and a greater government focus on education programs nationwide.

Pacific Adventist University field visit to Varirata National Park, 25 July, 2019
Varirata National Park is the first established National Park in Papua New Guinea. Located on a high plateau between 800 and 900m asl in Sogeri, to get there is a winding, and scenic drive from Port Moresby. There are many species of mammals, including forest pademelons (wallabies), savannah wallabies, ground cuscus, sugar gliders, and many birds including the iconic Raggiana bird of Paradise, the national emblem of PNG. The vegetation is a mixture of dry sclerophyll, eucalyptus, and rainforest. Beyond Varirata stretches the rest of the spectacular Owen Stanley Ranges, with Mt Victoria (4,035m) clearly visible. The Pacific Adventist University located at the base of Varirata National Park, is frequented by ecology students, lecturers and researchers. Here's a brief look at the park, after a few hours of walking to locate a 5ha permanent forest plot, an output for a UNDP/GEF project, that we're currently engaged with. An awesome opportunity to investigate forest dynamics within a transitional zone, and to understand the ecology of vertebrate assemblages within the park. Bring on semester 2...now you know where I'll be most of this semester! (Thanks Jeremy Sute for the drone images!)
