Shelburne Farms & Burlington, VT Winter Guide 2020
Our final day in Burlington, Vermont was mostly spent at Shelburne Farms since many places are closed on Christmas Eve. I absolutely loved visiting the Shelburne Farms resident Swiss cows and sampling their farmstead cheddar cheese. Afterwards, we headed over to Lake Champlain Chocolate factory in Burlington, Vermont before heading back to the hotel for the evening.

1959 Cox District - Woodstock Vermont
A modern architectural masterpiece and important work by award winning and internationally recognized architect Rick Joy, Woodstock Farm presents a dramatic shingle and stone house and barn set on over 200 acres of Vermont countryside minutes from the picturesque village of Woodstock and in close proximity to Dartmouth College in Hanover, New Hampshire. The high concept contemporary design is executed with the sharpest attention to craft and draws on the vernacular of the rural northeast. The main residence offers a 152-foot elongated gable house with massive end walls of Lake Champlain bedrock and cedar cladding on the roof and side walls. Set at a subtle angle to the barn, the north facade of the main house engages the purity of the setting and looks out onto a large, deep, spring fed swimming pond and the rolling pastureland, hills and mixed northern hardwood forests that comprise the property.

Produce Safety Improvement Grantee Spotlight: New Leaf CSA
Nestled in the hills of Dummerston, Vermont, New Leaf CSA offers the community a wide array of fresh vegetables, herbs, flowers and more. Elizabeth Wood, owner and farmer, sought to make on-farm
improvements to address produce safety, efficiency and product quality all in one. In April of 2018, New Leaf CSA was awarded a Produce Safety Improvement Grant from the Vermont Produce Program. By training with UVM Extension and participating in the Vermont Veggie and Berry Growers Association CAPS program, Wood learned new techniques and methods to reduce risk on her farm.

Vermont
Small but beautiful: Do you know where Vermont's name comes from? Can you name the 2 U.S. presidents born in this state? And would you know the state's - probably - most famous culinary treat? Find out the answer to all these questions in our newest state video with Stephanie Lyons from the Economic/Political Section of the U.S. Embassy. #50states #VT
One little error we would like to correct: Vermont became a state in 1791, not as stated in the video as 1790.

We had a chance to catch up with head brewer Jeff Tomaino and have him walk us through a batch of their switchback ale. We also meet up with owner, brew-master, and craft brew legend Bill Cherry to get the low down on the history of switchback and see what inspires him to keep brewing great Vermont craft brews. GRAHALL - Cavendish, Vermont
GRAHALL- A feat of architecture and engineering, this is a spectacular, one of kind estate on 240+ acres in prime central Vermont. Drawing inspiration from an iconic castle on a loch, Grahall sits atop Hawk's Mountain with breathtaking views in all directions. The home was built with stunning Glimmerstone Granite that is indigenous to the area and quarried directly from the property. An incredible amount of thought and planning went into the creation of the exteriors and interiors. While the structure is commanding the interiors feel warm and embracing. Many of the gathering rooms are circular with large granite fireplaces. There is wonderful light throughout the house providing passive solar. There are 7 well appointed bedrooms and 5 baths. The 270 degree view takes in neighboring ski mountains like Okemo, and the grounds are accented by two stocked ponds that reflect the house like a moat. Grahall has a very successful track record as a corporate retreat and rental property.
Shelburne Farms
Shelburne Farms is a working farm, including a dairy, Market Garden, and woodlands. The food that we grow honors and preserves the land it comes from. That’s what building a sustainable food system is all about. What make us unique is that we also use our food and farming practices to educate others about sustainable agriculture and our shared connections to the soil.

1947 VERMONT BURLINGTON, BENNINGTON TRAVELOGUE MOVIE THIS LAND OF OURS 60864
The 1947 episode “The State of Vermont,” part of the Carl Dudley Productions motion pictures series This Land Of Ours, gives viewers a taste of Vermont. Vermont, the first state to be added to the original 13, is home to breathtaking scenery. The state’s large waterways provide energy through hydroelectric power (01:17) and opportunities for recreation: Lake Champlain is the largest lake east of the Great Lakes. Vermont’s first settlement is Brattleboro (01:30), situated on the Connecticut River. Rutland (01:54) is known as the Marble City due to its nearby quarries that produce more than 70% of marble used in the U.S. Barre (02:35) is home to granite quarries. Montpelier (03:07) is Vermont’s capital, with its beautiful capital building (08:45), and was established in 1805. The state’s largest city is Burlington (03:22), home of Ethan Allen and the state’s flagship university (03:43). Bennington (04:02) was the first town to be chartered west of the Connecticut River and is known for the Battle of Bennington. The Revolutionary War battle is commemorated by one of the tallest battle monuments in the world (04:20). Bennington also features first-rate institutions of learning, such as the Bennington School for Girls. Vermont claims Calvin Coolidge as one of its sons; Coolidge was born in small store in Plymouth (04:47). Rural landscapes (05:00) dominate much of Vermont, and feature poultry, potato, and cattle farms. Vermont’s cattle are responsible for the state’s famous milk, cream, butter, and cheese industry, with products transported by companies like White Bros. Milk Co. (06:08). Vermont’s most famous resource is arguably the sap harvested from maple trees (06:18), which is turned into maple syrup, sugar, and candy (06:43). With scenic beauty everywhere, from covered bridges to picturesque inns, from pristine rivers to snow-covered slopes (07:30), there is something for everyone during every season.
