This memorial service remembers recently deceased military veterans throughout the United States whose mortal remains have been interred at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery as well as San Diego county veterans who have recently passed away and have been put to rest without Full Military Honors. This Veterans Journal sponsored cooperative effort of the Veterans Memorial Church and the Veterans Museum and Memorial Center is their way of honoring those who have served their country as a member of the armed forces. It is their sincere hope that this service will provide a certain measure of comfort to all who grieve their loss and reassure the bereaved that their loved one, although gone, is not forgotten. Navy Captain Retirement Ceremony Photography - Veterans Memorial Center Balboa Park - San Diego, CA
Captain David Beverly's retirement ceremony photography was a pleasure and honor to capture for him and his family. After 31 years of a very impressive career in the United States Navy, CAPT Beverly 'is going ashore'. With fellow Naval Officers, family, friends, and colleagues in attendance, the retirement ceremony was filled with honor, recognition, and inspiration, if not a tear or two at this special moment. This video and photos in the accompanying article at the link below capture some of the splendor of the retirement ceremony.

San Diego's Veterans Museum Provides Honorable Burials
Twelve years ago, some retired veterans learned that not all veterans were being buried with dignity. Some remains were being shipped to Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery in FedEx boxes. Admiral Rod Melendez of San Diego's Veterans Museum and Memorial Center talks to KPBS about why this was happening and what the museum is doing to combat this.

Command Museum of the US Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego
Where the Hollywood Marines learn their business.
from Wikipedia: Marine Corps Recruit Depot (commonly referred to as MCRD) San Diego is a United States Marine Corps military installation in San Diego, California. It lies between San Diego Bay and Interstate 5, adjacent to San Diego International Airport and the former Naval Training Center San Diego.[2] MCRD San Diego's main mission is the initial training of enlisted male recruits living west of the Mississippi River. Over 21,000 recruits are trained each year. The Depot also is the home to the Marine Corps' Recruiter School and Western Recruiting Region's Drill Instructors School. The initial proposal for the base came from Congressman William Kettner, who also proposed construction of Naval Training Center San Diego. The Marine base only became a reality due to the perseverance of its first commanding officer, Colonel Joseph Henry Pendleton (later a general and the namesake of Camp Pendleton).[4] Before the commissioning of the base on Dutch Flats, the Marines were based in Balboa Park.[5] The structures were designed by architect Bertram Goodhue in the Spanish Colonial Revival style, and they echo the style used for the buildings of the 1915 Panama--California Exposition (also inspired by Goodhue). The base and its original buildings are now on the National Register of Historic Places listings in San Diego County, California. By 1921, the base was formally commissioned and in 1923, it became the primary recruiting center for the west coast. During World War II, the flow of recruits into the base surged, with 18,000 recruits arriving in one month.[4] In 1948, the base was formally named Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego. The MCRD San Diego Command Museum is located in Day Hall, Building 26, Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego, San Diego, California. It exhibits historical items relating to the United States Marine Corps.[1] The museum opened on November 10, 1987 and was officially designated as a command museum on January 8, 1993.

Timken Museum of Art: The Russian Collection, San Diego, California
The museum displays European old master paintings, sculptures, and tapestries. The museum's also features an extensive collection of Russian icons spanning the period from the 15th to the 20th century. This collection is featured in this video.
The groundwork for the museum was laid in 1951 when Walter Ames helped sisters Amy and Anne Putnam to form the nonprofit Putnam Foundation to own and manage their art collection. The sisters had settled in San Diego in the early 20th century and made donations to the San Diego Museum of Art in its early years. At first the Foundation loaned items from its collection to noteworthy museums across the United States. When the Timken Museum opened in 1965, the Putnam Foundation Collection provided its initial material and Walter Ames became its first director.

Exactly How USS San Diego Sank is Still Unknown 100 Years Later
FIRE ISLAND, NY (July, 2018) Dr. Alexis Catsambis, an archaeologist with the Naval History and Heritage Command discusses the July 2018 survey and commemoration ceremony marking the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the USS San Diego (ACR 6). The Naval History and Heritage Command partnered with Mobile Diving and Salvage Unit Two and USNS Grasp to survey and interpret the wreck site of World War I era armored cruiser USS San Diego. The site visit is a continuation of a survey conducted last year from September 11-15. The objective was to assess the condition of the wreck site and determine if the ship, the only major warship lost by the United States in World War I, was sunk as a result of a German submarine-launched torpedo or mine. Ultimately, data gathered will help inform the management of the site, a responsibility of NHHC’s Underwater Archeology Branch. The survey culminated in a commemoration ceremony marking the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the vessel on July 19, 1918. USS San Diego (ACR 6), now rests off the coast of Fire Island, NY. Six Sailors perished along with the ship, which serves as a war grave.
