Northern Tuscany has so much to be discovered, especially for those travelling on foot. Starting in Lucca, you can spend a day visiting its beautiful gardens and villas, or discovering some of the nearly one hundred churches that characterise this beautiful town.
The first part of this walk takes you through the open and flat lands of the Val d'Elsa. You then enter the Tuscan Hills.
The second half of the tour takes you back in time, exploring narrow streets and buildings of some of the most renowned medieval towns in Tuscany, including San Gimignano and Monteriggioni.
As you reach Siena the landscape surrounding you is full of open, green rolling hills. Stay in comfortable, family-run accommodation where you can sample the delicious culinary delights of Tuscany.

Section Nine of the Via Francigena covers a distance of 157 kilometres and is one of the most spectacular sections on the entire Via, the Camino to Rome. From Canterbury in England to Rome in Italy, the 1900km Francigena Way dates back to the 11th century when pilgrims travelled across Europe on foot to visit the site of Martyrdom of St Peter and St Paul in Rome. View tours here:
With the modernisation of Europe and the shifting of borders, the route became obsolete, until a recent revival of the pilgrimage making it one of the most exciting pilgrimage trails in Europe today.
The Orvieto to Rome trip takes in the last section of the trail through to Rome, passing by ancient relics and hilltop towns.
The first walk from Orvieto takes you down to the charming lake town of Bolsena, then passes through medieval town Montefiascone, known for its great wine, and then continues through woods and by abbeys as you approach the Eternal City of Rome.

From Valle D'Aosta on the Swiss Border to Rome. 10 year old Rosie and her dad complete the journey in 26 days. Including several 50km days in the blistering heat. The trail begins in Aosta but also passes through Piemonte, Lombardia, Emilia Romagna, Tuscany, Liguria and Lazio.

One of the world’s most rewarding walking trails, the historic Via Francigena is an ancient road and pilgrim’s route stretching more than a thousand kilometres through France, Switzerland and Italy, finishing up in the Eternal City of Rome.
The Italian section of this iconic trail cuts a path through some of Italy’s prettiest regions, combining rich history and Roman ruins, medieval cities and traditional villages, world-famous cuisine and mind-blowing natural beauty to discover on foot or by bike.
The Fidenza to Tuscany section of the historic Via Francigena journeys through the Apennines and the Parma hills before entering Tuscany.
Starting in Fidenza, where you can admire the Cathedral and its portals that narrate the life of Saint Domninus, the walk soon enters the Parma hills, which are a foretaste of the Tuscan mountains to come.
The climb to the top of Mount Valoria and over the Cisa Pass will sometimes be long and demanding, but the priceless views over the Lombardy and Lunigiana plains will reward your efforts.
Descending towards your final destination, you'll continue along the ancient walking path, surrounded by the beauty of the natural landscape. Walking over the medieval Groppodalosio bridge will feel as though you're stepping back in time.
You'll finally arrive in the charming town of Pontremoli where you can relax among the alleyways of the old town centre.

Francigena - percorso di Luce.. The Italian way.. Seconda parte
La seconda parte del mio cammino, dal Colle del gran San Bernardo fino a Costa Mezzana in provincia di Parma.
La mia Francigena, la via Italiana, dal Colle del Gran San Bernardo a Roma.. Sono le otto del 9 giugno del 2018, il sole stà sorgendo, una bella giornata. E' un sabato mattina come tanti, ma non per me. Questo è il giorno in cui il mio cuore mi ha spinto a percorrere nuovamente il sentiero di una nuova avventura. Parto dalla stazione termini con il treno, direzione Aosta, per poi proseguire fin su al colle del Gran San Bernardo. La Francigena Italiana inizia da li, dal confine con la Svizzera, ed io la percorrerò tutta con la mia Bici, fino ad arrivare a Roma, Piazza San Pietro. In questa seconda parte, il mio cammino continua da Verres a Costa Mezzana. Il passaggio in pianura padana, il deserto verde, come lo chiamo io, la crisi dopo Vercelli. Tante cose da vedere in questo episodio: i Santuari della Madonna della Bozzola e di Chiaravalle, Robbio, Pavia, Fiorenzuola d'arda, Orio Litta e il fiume Pò, il punto di attraversamento con il Guado di Sigerico e tanto altro.. La Via Francigena è un’esperienza indimenticabile. È il viaggio della vita.
STORIA E ORIGINI:
Alla soglia del primo millennio, numerosi pellegrini, spinti dalla fede, si mettevano in cammino attraversando l'Europa per recarsi in preghiera a Roma, alla tomba dell'apostolo Pietro oppure in Terra Santa a Gerusalemme. Nel corso del tempo sempre più pellegrini si avventuravano in questi sentieri tanto che si vennero a creare delle vere e proprie vie della fede. Infatti, il nome Francigena, indica le vie della terra dei Franchi, che consentiva ai pellegrini al di là delle Alpi di giungere a Roma. E' soprattutto grazie all'Abate Sigerico che ancora oggi siamo in grado di ripercorrere questi meravigliosi sentieri. Egli, nominato vescovo di Canterbury nel 990 da Papa Giovanni XV, dovette recarsi a Roma per ricevere l'investitura attraversando ben 80 località e il racconto che ne seguì fu talmente dettagliato e preciso che molti pellegrini lo presero come riferimento passando parola ad altri ed altri ancora. All'epoca la stampa non esisteva ma grazie a questo metodo di propaganda, la Via Francigena divenne un percorso privilegiato per i pellegrini e più tardi per i commercianti di spezie. Ma la destinazione era sempre la stessa: il soglio di Pietro.
