Loas,Vieng Xai Caves
The Viengxay caves in Houaphanh Province of North-Eastern Laos are an extensive network of caves in limestone mountains. Four-hundred eighty of these caves were used by the Pathet Lao during the Second Indochina War to shelter from American bombardment.[1] For more information please visit:

The Secret Caves of Laos
The bombing of Laos by American forces during the conflict in Vietnam in the 1960s was called the Secret War. Now a little-known story of survival has emerged, of more than 20-thousand people who lived in a hidden city of underground caves for 9 years. Martin Lowe travelled to Houaphanh Province in northern Laos to find out what happened.

Xam Neua is located in a valley in the Houaphan Province. In the early morning hours women wash clothes in the river flowing through the city. An elementary school is located near the main bridge crossing this river. At 5:45 am and pm each day there are public addresses from loudspeakers atop a tower on the school playground, expounding on the communist life and philosophy. These addresses are usually accompanied by Lao music. It is reputed there is a Communist re-education camp located in Xam Neua, and that it was the Pathet Lao capital during the Laotian Civil War Battle of Lima Site 85 (LS-85) 11 March 1968. It is near the Pathet Lao refuges in the Viengxay caves, which the Lao government hopes to promote as a tourism destination similar to the Củ Chi tunnels near Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam, and the Killing Fields Memorial near Phnom Penh in Cambodia. It is also near the Nam Et-Phou Louey National Protected Area, (pronounced naam et poo loo-ee).[1]
LAOS: NATURAL CAVES MAY BOOST TOURISM INDUSTRY
Laotian/Nat sound
The Laotian government is hoping to boost its tourism industry by opening a group of natural caves that was once home to the country's communist forces during the Indochina War.
For nearly a decade, American bombs rained down on the Pathet Lao troops, which survived the onslaught by hiding in the caves located in north-eastern Laos.
Now, almost 25 years after the end of the war, those caves are set to become one of the region's most fascinating tourist attractions.
Viengxay - it's the cradle and almost the grave of Lao communism.
It was from this land of limestone crags that the leaders of the Pathet Lao first emerged.
It is also where they fled to when the U-S unleashed its ferocious aerial blitz during the Indochina War.
Penetrate the thick surrounding jungle, and you soon discover why.
Caves - ready-made bomb shelters - stretch back deep into the rock, dotting the Viengxay landscape.
Some of them are so large they were used as gathering halls.
The caves gave the Pathet Lao leaders a base to run their war and offered thousands of terrified civilians a shelter for almost a decade.
In one cave, the remains of several meals still litter the ground.
Blast marks testify to the waves of American seek-and-destroy missions.
Most people survived, including the vice governor of the province.
He recalls the terror of sitting out a bombing raid.
SOUNDBITE: (Laotian)
It was frightening, but what could you do? When the bombs fell, rocks came down and smashed furniture, destroyed beds - but you couldn't do anything but wait it out. When the bombing was over you fixed up the damage and got on with it.
SUPER CAPTION: Khamphanh Phimmavong, vice governor of Houaphan province
U-S aircraft bombed Laos for nine years, dropping more than two (m) million tonnes of ordnance, making it the most bombed nation in history.
As in neighbouring Vietnam and Cambodia, the tactic failed to wipe out the communist forces.
The scars from the offensive are still clearly visible from the air.
The Pathet Lao coped as best they could.
In this cave, a hospital was established.
Today, filing cabinets and furniture lie on the floor, rusting and broken.
In the former surgery, blood-soaked bandages sit among empty bottles of medicine.
SOUNDBITE: (Laotian)
Even though we won the war because of our policies, the caves were important because they gave us a place to hide and work. The caves were our comrades-in-arms.
SUPER CAPTION: Khamphanh Phimmavong, vice governor of Houaphan province
The authorities hope to open the most important caves to tourists by the end of the year.
There may not be a rush since the caves are difficult to reach, but tourism officials still expect a steady stream of visitors.
SOUNDBITE (Laotian):
By the year 2000 - if we can get the airport finished and get good roads, hotel and restaurants - I hope the number of tourists will increase.
SUPER CAPTION: Lampan Phomsay, tourism officer
Today, reminders of the war are everywhere around Viengxay.
This girl's bath is an old bomb casing.
Elsewhere, bombs are still live and dangerous.
Thousands, perhaps more, remain from the U-S onslaught.
They are a powerful reminder of just how important the caves were and how hard the Americans tried to destroy them.
