Like a young belle who’s beautiful without even realising it, the town of Vieste clings modestly to a spectacular promontory on the Gargano Promontory. It resembles nothing so much as a cross between Naples and Dubrovnik, with a bit of Puglian magic mixed in. The narrow alleys of the old town, draped with lines of drying clothes and patrolled by slinking cats and the odd friendly dog, are an atmospheric place, day or night, high or off-season. Wedged up against the old town is the equally unpretentious new town, ghostly in winter, but packed with holidaying humanity in summer, especially during the passeggiata (evening stroll).
Vieste is strategically placed atop the steep Pizzomunno cliffs between two sweeping sandy beaches. The gritty harbour offers water sports, while the surrounding Parco Nazionale del Gargano is perfect for cycling and hiking. All things considered, it's one of the south’s most complete all-in-one destinations.
Vieste is the easternmost town on the Gargano promontory, situated in the National Park, halfway between Peschici and the wonderful coastline of Mattinata. Vieste has a historic medieval centre, a charming maze of ancient houses and narrow alleyways studded with typical souvenir shops and craft shops. After you've explored this ancient district, visit the Castle and the Cathedral, and then stroll down to Piazzetta Petrone, a small square with a remarkable coastal view.
The Pearl of Gargano charms with its silvery pink sand, limpid, crystal clear waters, long beaches, cliffs and 26 sea caves. The sea also stars at the Malacological Museum, which has more than 15 thousand shells from all over the world.
The coastline, a continuous series of inlets and coves, features must-see beaches at Vignanotica, Castello, San Lorenzo, the Bay of San Felice (with an “architello”, a natural stone archway over the sea), and Punta Lunga. After an afternoon on the beach, the smell of the sea also hangs over dinner at the trabucchi, traditional fishing huts, housing charming restaurants over the Adriatic.
The Pearl of Gargano's historic medieval centre awaits to be explored. A characteristic fretwork of narrow alleys, steep stairways and thin stone arches, it's dominated by Fredrick II’s Castello Svevo (Swabian Castle). This fortress, built over Angevin ruins high on the hill, watches over Vieste with its imposing dark brown silhouette. Also guarding the city is the Cattedrale dell’Assunta (Cathedral of the Assumption), a remarkable example of Romanesque architecture. From here, you can set out to discover the town, from Piazza Garibaldi to Piazza Kennedy, all the way down to the marina and over to the Oriental side of Vieste. Here, the area around Via Tripoli looks a little bit like Greece.

The beach Scialara also called Pizzomunno or the castle is one of the most famous beaches of Vieste, located just outside of the village. The beach gets its name from the impressive and famous white limestone monolith about 25 metres, which stands at the beginning of the beach called Pizzomunno. The White beach is characterized by a beautiful coastline of fine golden sand along about 3 kilometers, well equipped and bathed in a blue, crystal clear, with sandy bottoms and sloping, ideal for families and children. For Pizzomunno Vieste was a beautiful fisherman who loved madly his girlfriend named Falcone.
The Beach of Portonuovo is located 4.5 km south of Vieste and is reached along the Provincial road 53 for the Morning. The beach owes its name to the saracen tower, that was there, even if many people say that the name is inspired by the island in the form of a cat that stands opposite the lido. When the tide is low and the sea is calm, you can get to swimming on the small island that becomes a destination for romantic excursions. The sea is beautiful, blue, clear and transparent, with gravelly bottoms, and quite high, which is ideal for swimming and fishing, scuba diving, less than ideal for families and children. The beach is accessible scendendendo by a road steep and offers some services with the possibility to rent pedal boats.
The Bay of Porto Greco is located 14 Km away from Vieste to Mattinata and is reachable following the Provincial road 53, and then getting onto the Provincial road 54 that connects Vieste to Pugnochiuso. It is a beautiful bay with a pebble beach, clear pristine, solitary and wild charm, all surrounded by high limestone cliffs overhanging the sea and with close vegetation of aleppo pine trees.
The beach is located about 19 Km from Vieste and Pugnochiuso is reachable following before the County Road 53 and then onto County Road 54 linking Vieste to Pugnochiuso. The beach is accessible only by tourist facility from which it takes its name. Pebble Beach is 350 metres long, lonely and wild charm, surrounded by dense Mediterranean vegetation.

Gargano : Spiaggia Vignanotica (Vieste)

Beach of Zagare or Beach of Mergoli and Hotel Baia delle Zagare. Baia delle Zagare Beach is a piece of heaven according to those who have it visited.
Baia delle Zagare is an isolated sandy beach, accessible by a 20-minute walk from nearby hotel and by boat. It is a pristine bay, enclosed by limestone cliffs that protect the beach from the northern winds, but limiting the sunlight only to late afternoon, which is one good reason why you should plan to come here as early as possible.

Gargano | Puglia, Italy
If beaches are your thing, you cannot miss Gargano in Puglia! Located in the spur of the boot in southeast Italy, towering white limestone cliffs meet clear emerald waters on the pebbly shores of Gargano's coastline.
We rented a boat from Mattinata (no license required!) and took it north for the day, stopping a few kilometres shy of Vieste. There are many hidden beaches and caves along the coast that can only be accessed by boat or kayak.
Check out this video to see some of the amazing spots along this route!
