'World of Adventure' goes sailing and snowboarding in Iceland | GrindTV
World of Adventure travels to the fourth-annual Iceland Winter Games (IWG), one of the fastest-growing winter festivals in Europe.
Originating as a single event AFP world tour Freeskiing competition, IWG now includes events ranging from ski- and snowboard comps to the Icelandic National Dog sledding championship and the International Video competition featuring teams from the US and Europe (the main focus of the WOA coverage).
The Iceland Winter Games hometown of Akureyri is a small but still one of the biggest in Iceland with a population of just under 20,000 inhabitants. The city is situated in north-east Iceland, in one of the longest fjords in the country and surrounded by mountains reaching 1000-1500 m. The Arctic Circle in only 60 km north of Akureyri but still the climate is mild, with summer temperatures up to 25°C and winter temperatures in average around 0 ̊C.
In 2015 Lonely Planet chose Akureyri as the #1 Best place in Europe“ and Mt. Hlíðarfjall Ski resort was nominated as one of the top 12 most exotic ski resorts in the world.
Iceland Winter Games 2016
Iceland gears up for one of the world‘s biggest winter festivals, Iceland Winter Games
24th March – 3rd April 2016
2016 will welcome the third Iceland Winter Games (IWG), which is one of the world‘s biggest winter festivals. Based in Akureyri, the ski capital of Iceland, the festival draws in some of the biggest names in winter sports and hosts events unseen anywhere else. This includes challenging ski jumps in the shape of volcanoes, mountain top to sea skiing, Arctic horseback riding and dog sledding championships. Taking place from 24th March - 3rd April, the festival is a must for adrenalin loving adventure seekers and those looking for a more unusual festival.
Starting in 2014 as a single freeskiing competion, IWG 2016 will have over 60 events, making it one of the fastest growing winter festivals. The two main events are the AFP Gold freeski competition and the IWG open snowboard competition, which has previously attracted some of the best skiers and snowboarders in the world such as Jesper Tjader (world rank #6) and Oystein Braaten (world rank #7).
As well as winter sports, guests can take breathtaking tours in superjeeps, helicopters, snowmobiles or even in green energy powered schooner boats. The focus is on intrinsically Icelandic activities such as skiing under the northern lights on Mt. Hlíðarfjall´s beautiful slopes and heliskiing on the Troll Peninsula, where the slopes reach from the mountain tops all the way to black sand beaches. A ski in Iceland can even end with a surf in the Arctic Ocean!
The festival is based in Akureyri, Iceland‘s second city and the gateway to Iceland‘s north. Surrounded by mountains and located along a long fjord, it is the perfect setting for a winter sports festival.

Iceland Heli Trip 2014
Here is my buddy Allan Brook's video from our Heli trip to Iceland in April of 2014. Great Arctic Heli Skiing experience in Siglufjordur (Just north of Akureyri) in Northern Iceland. Lots of wide open unchartered terrain, natural hot springs, and super nice people! All followed by a little throw down party time in Reykjavik!
