Villa San Michele Anacapri (Isola di Capri) Italia 4K
#GreetingsfromItalyzbyglus Villa San Michele is a villa built by the Swedish poor and fashion doctor and writer Axel Munthe in Anacapri on the island of Capri in the 1890s
AXEL MUNTHE and THE STORY OF SAN MICHELE, CAPRI
An hour at the self-built memorial of the Swedish doctor who loved Capri (17 October 2013),
Villa San Michele, Capri
Villa San Michele is located next to the village of Anacapri at a height of 327 m on the island of Capri. It was restored by Axel Munthe on the ruins of one of Roman Emperor Tiberius's villas. Axel Munthe was a Swedish doctor who settled in Capri in 1876 at the age of 19. Inspired by Capri he fell in love with the island and dreamt of buying a chapel and little house and building something a bit out of ordinary. By the turn of the 20th century when Dr Munthe had gained the status of a famous physician in Rome his dream was realized. Axel Munthe suffered increasingly from eye disorders and had to return to Sweden in 1943. Since 1949, when Dr Munthe had donated the villa to Sweden, a foundation of the same name has been administering the Villa San Michele.
More than a house, the villa exemplifies Dr Munthe's feelings and thoughts of beauty and life. The lush gardens accompanying the villa are filled with objets d'arts and a cornucopia of trees, plants and flowers.

Who was Axel Munthe? Villa San Michele, Anacapri, Capri, Italy
My home shall be open for the sun and the wind and the voices of the sea – like a Greek temple – and light, light, light everywhere! - Axel Munthe.
Villa San Michele rests on a quiet promontory in the western reaches of Capri. The site once inhabited by Roman Emperor Tiberius, then converted to a church is not simply a residence with an unparalleled view but rather the bearer of the designer's thoughts and feelings about beauty and philosophy. It's also a unique living example of a dream that became reality.
The architecture emphasizes the magnificence of the landscape. Each corner carefully curated to take full advantage of the natural sunlight that pours endlessly on this legendary island and the resulting shadows that contrast.
On our last journey in southern Italy we spent some time exploring the villa and its gardens. This video offers only a brief encounter with this very special location.

. .A cura di Paolo De Luca
Capri . A magical Villa San Michele
”I want my house open to sun and wind and the voice of the sea, like a Greek temple, and light, light, light everywhere!!”- Axel Munthe , (1857-1949), Swedish physician and author. He wanted to live on the island he loved and that loved him. And he wanted a home for the soul, because “the soul needs more space than the body”, he wrote. That is why the villa is surrounded by an impressive garden with flowers, colonnades, pergolas and solemn cypresses. Behind the garden is the Barbarossa mountain, that Axel Munthe turned into a sanctuary for migratory birds, on their journey between the continents.
Villa San Michele on Capri in Italy is a magical place quite out of the ordinary. Some people call the villa with its garden a paradise on earth, others regard it as the pearl of the island, a place where for a moment you can step out of this world.

Villa San Michele, Anacapri, Capri, Italy
Villa San Michele is located in Anacapri on the island of Capri. Built by Dr. Axel Munte. A villa with a rich collection of ancient art, celebrated in Dr. Axel Munte's book The Legend of San Michele. The villa is very beautiful. A must visit. Admission is 8 euros.
Axel Munte was born on 31.10.1857 in the provincial Swedish city of Oskarshamn. His father owns a pharmacy and his mother takes care of the three children. Little Axel is very fond of animals and often brings home mice, cats, dogs. In 1874 he enrolled in the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Uppsala, after the second year he became seriously ill, received pulmonary hemorrhage, and on medical prescription undertook a trip south to Italy. At 19, he falls in love with the island of Capri and dreams of one day being able to settle there. Returning, Axel chose the softer climate of France, where in 1880 he graduated from medicine in Paris. For the rest of his life, he is grateful to Professor Charcot, who was known for his time, for which he spent his practice at Salpetriere Hospital. Remarkable is his medical career in Paris and Rome, where he treats wealthy patients and helps out the poor for free. In 1896, he succeeded in fulfilling his big dream and bought one of the dilapidated old villas built by Emperor Tiberius and himself, with the help of a local master, built the Villa San Michele. In addition to healing, he devotes his free time to excavation.
The best way to build a house is to tear it down and start over again until the eye tells you everything is right. The eyes understand a lot more about architecture than books. The eye is infallible as long as you rely on your own your vision, not the alien one.
If you didn't give people yourself, you didn't give them anything-these words of the Swedish doctor and writer Axel Munte (1857-1949) could serve as the motto of his entire activity and creativity.
Axel Munte lived on Anacapri until 1943, and until his death in 1949 lived in the Royal Palace in Stockholm as a personal guest of King Gustav V. He willed the Swedish people's villa in order to strengthen ties between Sweden and Italy.
