Capri, Italy - The Best of
Capri is an island off the coast of Naples with Towering limestone cliffs
and famous Turquoise waters (with legendary blue grotto which was highlighted in the book Red Sails To Capri, by Ann Weil.
Hot resort since Roman times and in the 1950's became a top tourist destination.
AnaCapri was a favorite of French composer Claude Debussy. A quieter pace prevails where luxury hotels like the Capri Palace cater to weddings as well and spa seekers. The swimming pool has underwater glass viewing windows. The village has a pedestrian walkways which meanders between eye popping buildings and restaurants bursting with blooms like bougainvillea on steroids. There is of course pizza by the rectangle (no slices) and enormous lemons which where the pulp is used in a refreshing lemon and olive oil salad.
In the town of Capri, things get a lot busier. Fiats specially outfitted with open tops brings passengers up from Marina Grande where ferries arrive throughout the day from Sorrento and Naples.
But the biggest crowd bringer are the cruise ships which tender in thousands of passengers turning Capri into one long line like at Disneyland on the 4th of July. Troops of tourists follow paddle swinging guides through the narrow streets of Capri often causing traffic jams where the most robust tourists survive. Capri has some of the most exclusive jewelry, clothing and home assessory shops anywhere but an owner confided to me that during the time when the ships unload their passengers on the island they could close their doors and not have missed a sale. This is, for the most part, a tee shirt and gelato customer.
So how do you see Capri while avoiding the daily rush? Since the crowds usually arrive by 10:30 AM and depart by 4 PM the best strategy is to shop early or late take the funicular down when the crowds are going up the hill and go up when the crowds are coming down in the afternoon.Have lunch a little off the beaten trail.
Aurora, one of Capri's oldest restaurants. Delicious salad like one with fresh cherry tomatoes, argula and slices of Parmesan make for a great starter. The pizzas are prepared in a special oven and the super thing crusted pizza a l'aqua is made with mozzarella cheese and pepperocini spice. Its not on the menu but they'll make it for you if you ask ... and ask you should. Also try the homemade fresh sorbets.
In the evening a classic place to dine is the Quissiana Hotel and the Rendezvous Bar. Besides sushi ... they have wonderful, classic Italian dishes with a twist such as the fresh local crab, tagoltelli with summer truffles and lemon, or ravioli filled with ricotta and a spicy tomato sauce.

Anacapri | Amalfi Coast, Italy Travel Diary
Anacapri is Capri's quaint little sister, a short convertible ride around to the other side. The high point (pun intended) is the chair lift to the top of Monte Solaro, the highest point of the island. You’re greeted by breathtaking views down to the Faraglioni rocks and super yachts scattered offshore.

Capri | Amalfi Coast, Italy Travel Diary
Capri is the exotic island where Birkins are beach bags and the taxis are convertibles. The extravagance extends to the sky high cliff faces, sparkling bright blue grottos and hot pink bougainvillea. Take a boat trip around the island, cruise through the Faraglioni rocks, and soak up the sun at La Fontelina beach club.

Capri's fabled beauty and refined hedonism has charmed them all, from Roman rulers and Russian revolutionaries to Hollywood legends. It’s the perfect microcosm of Mediterranean appeal, a fusion of glittering grottoes and coves, Roman ruins and chichi piazzas.
Already inhabited in the Palaeolithic period, the island was briefly occupied by the Greeks before Emperor Augustus made it his private playground and Tiberius retired here in AD 27. Its modern incarnation as a tourist centre dates from the early 20th century.
It’s also a favourite day-trip destination and a summer favourite of holidaying VIPs. Inevitably, the two main centres, Capri Town and its uphill rival Anacapri, are almost entirely given over to tourism, with the high prices that follow. But explore beyond the designer boutiques and cafes and you’ll find that Capri retains an unspoilt charm, with grand villas, overgrown vegetable plots, sun-bleached, peeling stucco and banks of brilliantly coloured bougainvillea.

CAPRI ISLAND, ITALY, HISTORY & TOURISM
Capri is an island located in the Tyrrhenian Sea off the Sorrentine Peninsula. Located on the south side of the Gulf of Naples in the Campania region of Italy. The main town Capri that is located on the island shares the name. It has been a resort since the time of the Roman Republic.
Capri is part of the region of Campania, Metropolitan City of Naples. The town of Capri is a comune and the island's main population centre. The island has two harbours, Marina Piccola and Marina Grande, it is main port of the island. The separate comune of Anacapri is located high on the hills to the west. Total area 10.4 km2.
TOURISM
Capri is a tourist destination for both Italians and foreigners. In the 1950s Capri became a popular resort. In summer, the island is heavily visited by tourists. Capri has twelve churches, seven museums and several monuments. The most visited attraction in Capri is the Grotta Azzurra. It is a special cave, discovered in the 19th century by foreign tourists. On one side of the grotto are the remains of ancient Roman rock, with a narrow cavern.
HISTORY
The Evidence of human settlement was discovered during the Roman era in this island. Augustus developed Capri; he built temples, villas, aqueducts, and planted gardens so he could enjoy his private paradise. Augustus' successor Tiberius built a series of villas at Capri, the most famous of which is the Villa Jovis, one of the best-preserved Roman villas in Italy. In 27 AD. In 182 AD, Emperor Commodus banished his sister Lucilla to Capri. She was executed shortly afterwards.
HOW TO GO
Capri is served by ferry or hydrofoil from Naples, Sorrento, Positano or Amalfi as well as by boat services from the ports of the Bay of Naples and the Sorrentine Peninsula. Boats arrive in the morning and leave after lunch (3–4 pm). From Naples, the ferry takes 80 minutes, and the hydrofoil 40 minutes. From Sorrento, the ferry takes about 40 minutes while the hydrofoil takes about 20 minutes. During the summer months, ferry connections from the island of Capri to the mainland are frequent. In addition, in the harbor of Marina Grande, tourists can easily rent a private boat.
GOVERNMENT
Italy is a Republic, thus Capri, as part of Italy, has adopted those same principles too. The voters of the island elect representatives for the two villages on the island. The chosen representatives then choose two mayors to govern with them. Total population around 15 thousands.
