Record Store Day 2019 sampler @ Princeton Record Exchange
The 12th Annual Record Store Day is Saturday, April 13!
Record Store Day celebrates the culture of the independently owned record store. It brings together fans, artists, and thousands of independent record stores across the world. On this day, hundreds of limited-edition titles are sold exclusively at stores like us here at Princeton Record Exchange.
The Merchandise
We know you know by now about the remarkable resurgence of vinyl in the last few years. While many records are available online or in “big box” stores, the main attraction of Record Store Day is a huge slate of titles that cannot be found anywhere but at participating independent brick-and-mortar stores. At last count, there are over 400 exclusive and early release titles being issued this year.
As part of the collectible appeal, most of these records have very limited production runs, typically from 100 to 5,000 pieces. They may be previously unreleased recordings or alternate takes, and are often on colored vinyl, are numbered, have special packaging or are otherwise different from the standard issues.
Some of this year’s highlights include:
David Bowie “Pin Ups”, a picture disc version, featuring the iconic cover done with super-model Twiggy, of his classic covers album from 1973.
Pink Floyd “A Saucerful of Secrets”, a new mono remaster using the original 1968 mono mix.
Weezer “The Teal Album”, the eagerly awaited release on vinyl of cover songs.
Pearl Jam (RSD 2019 Ambassadors!) “Live at Easy Street”, recorded at Seattle’s Easy Street Records in 2005.
John Lennon “Imagine (raw studio mixes)” a 180-gram release of his classic album featuring the songs as they were first recorded
.
Prince “The Versace Experience”, a CASSETTE recreating the ones given out in 1995 to the attendees of Versace’s show in Paris during Fashion Week. Features remixes, and unreleased songs
Three! Woodstock-related releases celebrating the 50th anniversary:
1) “Woodstock Mono PA Version” A 3-LP set in glorious mono! Taken from the soundboard recordings and the rare promo mono version and featuring unedited, full-length songs.
2) Janis Joplin “Woodstock, Sunday, August 17, 1969”, a 2-LP set on vinyl for the first time.
3) Sly & The Family Stone “Woodstock, Sunday, August 17, 1969”, also a 2-LP set on vinyl for the first time.
There are also great titles by Robert Plant, CSN&Y, Soccer Mommy, Billy Joel, Dylan, Courtney Barnett, Death Grips, Fleetwood Mac, Grateful Dead, Greta Van Fleet, Jeff Buckley, My Chemical Romance, U2, Queen, and many more!
Record Store Day F.A.Q.’s
1) What’s coming out?
The “official” Record Store Day list has been released. See for the titles and info on what makes them special.
2) Are you going to have “that record I’m looking for” in stock?
Sorry, we don’t know. We order a LOT of product, based on what we think we can sell, past history with artists, “cool” factor, etc. However, many of these titles have very limited production runs, so they are allocated by the distributors to stores around the country. How do they decide who gets what? Beats us. The upshot is that we get a sizable portion of what we order, but definitely not all of it. Still, on the last few Record Store Days we have had over 1,500 pieces for sale!
3) Can I reserve/prepay for a Record Store Day item?
No, sorry, we are a Record Store Day “pledged” store, and as such promise not to do such things. We sell in-store first come, first served on that day and not before.

Hitler discovers it is Record Store Day on his birthday
Parody by tolhurst (lol). It's Record Store Day on 20th April 2013 to celebrate Hitler's 124th birthday. Dolfy is looking forward to getting the 12 of Neon Lights by his old group Dolfwerk - core members Dolf and Alfian, plus Hans the Set List Pointer and Wilhelm, though he had to leave the band after the first album after the incident with the garage full of crates of vodka and the fork-lift truck. However, it seems most of the proper record shops have had to close and now even HFV - His Führer's Voice - is in trouble. The moral is to do with your local record shop - use it or lose it!
More about Record Store Day here:
Record shops include Spillers (Cardiff); Avalanche (Edinburgh); Union Music (Lewes); Banquet Records (Kingston); The Music Exchange (Nottingham); Beatin' Rhythm (Manchester); Pie & Vinyl Record Cafe (Southsea); Monorail (Glasgow); Tangled Parrot (Carmarthen); Head Records (Leamington Spa); Truck Store (Oxford); Jumbo Records who mentioned Crash Records (Leeds); VOD Music (a tiny shop) (Mold, Flintshire); Piccadilly Records (Manchester); Hot Rats (Sunderland - the owner financed the Toy Dolls and Nelly the Elephant); Action Records (Preston); Beatdown Records and RPM Music (Newcastle); Muse Music (Hebden Bridge).
In parody world, Downfall Hitler is just an ordinary person bemused by the changes taking place in the world around him. Several people have remarked on his striking resemblance with an evil mass murderer, but to Downfall Hitler, that's merely yet *another* trial life has sent to him.
On 5th April 2013 Sky News announced (
HMV's future as a high street retailer has been salvaged in a £50m deal that secures 2,500 jobs on Britain's beleaguered high streets. Hilco, a restructuring firm, confirmed on Friday morning that it had struck an agreement with Deloitte, the administrator to HMV, to rescue the retailer.
Clips are used from the marvellous film Downfall (2004) and from Kraftwerk's Neon Lights

HMD went digging for some 0161 heat in Vinyl Exchange with producer and close friend MNTCSTRLIXBEATS. Leaving with only two records, they also sampled the sounds of the streets in the form of a busker dressed as Sonic the Hedgehog, before hitting the studio to cook up some magic.
