Castello Visconteo - Locarno, Switzerland
David's Been Here is in the Swiss city of Locarno, where David tours the beautiful Castello Visconteo. Belonging to the Visconti family, this castle is located in the heart of Locarno, in fact, the city itself was built around the castle. The first testimonies of this building date back to 998, and after much seizure, rebuilding and destruction, only a fifth of its original structure stands today. Adding to its mystique, some say that Leonardo da Vinci may have designed the castle, but these claims are yet to be proven. Visit this beautiful, central and historic castle in the heart of Locarno with the David's Been Here Guide to Switzerland and experience its beauty first hand. Now available for your Kindle as well.

Locarno Castle and Sonogno - 24 Jun 2018
This was a Road Scholar trip to Switzerland. Visconteo Castle in Locarno. Then a POST bus to Sonogno in Valle Verzasca- don't think the road had any straight sections! We pass by the Contra Dam. The Contra Dam is known as Verzasca Dam and Locarno Dam. It is an arched dam, situated on the Verzasca River in the Val Verzasca of Ticino. The Dam became popular for bungee jumping, after a James Bond stuntman performed a bungee jump from it in the opening scene of the 1995 movie Golden Eye. The stunt was voted as the best movie stunt of all time in a poll of 2002 made by Sky Movies.

ABOUT:
Locarno is a southern Swiss town and located on the left shore of Lake Maggiore, at the northeastern tip of Ticino, at the southern foot of the Swiss Alps. The official language of Locarno is Italian.
Castello Visconteo is the town’s most ancient castle, dating back to circa 998. It has been renovated and converted into the town’s historical museum. This restored architectural treasure is speculated to have been designed by Leonardo da Vinci!
On the side of a mountain on the outskirts of Locarno, the image of the Virgin Mary was said to have appeared. In response to this vision, a humble chapel was created at this sacred site and dedicated to Saint Mary Avvocata. Since then numerous chapels have been built along the pathway to this mountain side chapel and this has now become a popular Catholic pilgrimage.
Locarno is famous for its pristine ski slopes, the idea of scuba diving and snorkeling in this town seems obscure. However, taking an aquatic adventure below sea level in Lake Maggiore is one of Locarno’s best-kept secrets.
The town is known for hosting the Locarno International Film Festival which takes place every year in August.

Locarno / Madonna del Sasso / Lago Maggiore / Drone: Top Places to Visit / DJI Phantom 4 / DJI Osmo
Locarno is a small city in Switzerland, located on the northern shores of Lago Maggiore (or Lake Maggiore). It lies in the Italian speaking Canton of Ticino. It won't wrong to say that Locarno is a little Italy in Switzerland - a Swiss city with Italian ambience. Often known for sunny and relatively warmer climate, it is very close to the foot of the Alps. Palm and lemon trees line the city's beautiful promenade. The promenade or the lake-front just adds to its mediterranean look.
The city has a charming Old Town with lot of history. The castle of Visconteo, which is at the edge of the Old Town, is one of the masterpieces designed by non other than renaissance genius - Leonardo da Vinci. Castle of Visconteo gives Switzerland its own da Vinci relic.
Not so far from the city center is the holy mountain of Madonna del Sasso. It is considered as one of the most popular pilgrimages in the region. Popular folklore says that Virgin Mary appeared on this site in 15th Century. Walking up to the hill spot is considered auspicious, although the monastery can as well be reached by a classical funicular train.
Plan a weekend trip to Locarno, it offers something to every visitor. Definitely it is one of the must see places in Switzerland. Enjoy!

Locarno and Ascona in the Ticino, Switzerland
We're visiting the town of Locarno, a very pretty little resort town along the shores of Lake Maggiore in southern Switzerland.
The old town has got an extensive arcade – lots of restaurants and ice cream shops, cafés and little stores to poke around in.

You can have some pizza, pasta, choose from a variety of delicious gelato flavors.
The food's Italian, they speak Italian and yet, yes we're in Switzerland.
The market sells all kinds of products, especially the local handmade crafted items. There is fabrics and products in wool, ceramics and wooden objects. You can find some wonderful local foods at the market like fresh cheese, eggs, fruits and vegetables, and some of the vendors sell this secondhand merchandise like old CDs and books, and even music tapes and clothing can be found here. It's all very down to earth, very local. These are casual part-time vendors just selling their stuff.
We notice the paving and the piazza was smooth water-worn stones in various colors, really quite beautiful.
Locarno's old town goes for about six blocks by four blocks so it's not really huge, but it's big enough to enjoy a nice stroll and have a poke around in the art galleries and look in some of the antique stores.
Quite a few modern shop-fronts along with the mix.
And we're going to take a little trip over to the nearby village Ascona. Here too, you can go by boat from Locarno, or you can just take the city bus. It only takes about twelve minutes on the city bus to get over here to Ascona.
Like Locarno, this town has an Italian feeling to it even though we're still in Switzerland.
There really is something very special about this kind of waterfront where you don't have any cars. You've got the lakeside and you've got beautiful buildings with the restaurants and a broad area for pedestrian promenade, and trees and gardens. It seems so classic and typical of your imagination of the ideal waterfront village, but in reality you just don't run into it all that often. There is normally a road and cars or something in the way of it. Here it's all laid out in a perfect setting.
You can see how popular boating is here for fishing and pleasure craft and just cruising. For the visitor it's all part of the picturesque scenery.
We'll also take a bus ride and hike in the nearby valleys.

More information about the video content bellow:
1. The canton of Ticino is the southernmost canton of Switzerland. Named after the river Ticino, it is the only canton where Italian is the sole official language and represents the bulk of the Italian-speaking area of Switzerland along with the southern parts of Graubünden. In 2016, Ticino was the European region with the second highest life expectancy at 85.0 years, and highest male life expectancy at 82.7 years.
2. In ancient times, the area of what is today Ticino was settled by the Lepontii, a Celtic tribe. Later, probably around the rule of Augustus, it became part of the Roman Empire. After the fall of the Western Empire, it was ruled by the Ostrogoths, the Lombards and the Franks. Around 1100 it was the centre of struggle between the free communes of Milan and Como: in the 14th century it was acquired by the Visconti, Dukes of Milan. In the fifteenth century the Swiss Confederates conquered the valleys south of the Alps in three separate conquests. The land now occupied by the canton was annexed from Italian cities in the 15th century by various Swiss forces in the last transalpine campaigns of the Old Swiss Confederacy. In the Helvetic Republic, established 1798, it was divided between the two new cantons of Bellinzona and Lugano. The creation of the Swiss Confederation in 1803 saw these two cantons combine to form the modern canton of Ticino.
3. Bellinzona is a municipality, a historic Swiss town, and the capital of the canton of Ticino in Switzerland. The town is famous for its three castles (Castelgrande, Montebello, Sasso Corbaro) that have been UNESCO World Heritage Sites since 2000.
4. The Gotthard Base Tunnel is a railway tunnel through the Alps in Switzerland. It is the world's longest railway and deepest traffic tunnel.
5. The Brissago Islands on Lake Maggiore are the only Swiss islands south of the Alps, and house botanical gardens with 1,600 different plant species from five continents.
6. The Locarno Film Festival is an annual film festival held every August in Locarno, Switzerland. Founded in 1946, it is one of the longest-running film festivals, and is also known for being a prestigious platform for art house films.
7. Swiss Miniature is an open air park showing Switzerland's main attractions in miniature.

Locarno
Southern plants such as palm trees or lemon trees flourish in Locarno and give the city its special charm. The heart of the city is the Piazza Grande, well-known for its annual film festival. The narrow lanes of the Old Town all lead to the Piazza. Castello Visconteo, a castle dating back to the 12th century, lies at the edge of the Old Town. About a fifth of the castle has been preserved in its original state.
The pilgrimage church of Madonna del Sasso is located above Locarno, in Orselina. The church is said to have been established as a result of an appearance of the Virgin Mary. It is the most notable sight in Locarno, and boasts an extraordinary view of the city, the lake and the mountains.
Locarno, Lago Maggiore, Ticino, Switzerland, Europe
Locarno is the capital of the Locarno district, located on the northern tip of Lake Maggiore in the Swiss canton of Ticino, close to Ascona at the foot of the Alps. It has a population of about 15,000 (60,000 for the urban area including Ascona). The official language of Locarno is Italian. It is the 74th biggest city in Switzerland by population and the 3rd biggest of the canton Ticino, after Lugano and Bellinzona. The Locarno International Film Festival takes place every year in August in the city and, at night, on the Piazza Grande. The Locarno Treaties were negotiated here in 1925. In January 2004, the Italian historian Marino Vigano speculated that Locarno's castle may have been designed by Leonardo da Vinci. Under the Helvetic Republic (1798--1803) Locarno was part of the Canton of Lugano. Following the collapse of the Helvetic Republic, the Act of Mediation, in 1803, created the Canton of Ticino with Locarno as an independent municipality. The Helvetic Republic was very liberal and attempted to reform much of Swiss society. However, the changes were too great and the Republic collapsed. The compromise Act of Mediation changed some aspects of society but left others unchanged. The new municipality of Lucarno was no longer ruled by three different patriziati, which had emerged from the three groups (nobles, borghesi and terrieri), but until the mid-19th century there were institutions that reached back to the Ancien Régime. For example, the community of Locarno and Ascona was dissolved in 1805. Nevertheless, a committee of the representatives of the former communities of Locarno managed, for several decades, the S. Carlo Hospital and schools, which had been shared by the patriziati of the old, combined community. However, the power of the old patriziati gradually weakened. In 1859, the terrieri decided to set aside their corporation. The nobles corporation distributed its assets in 1866-67 to its members and dissolved the archive, but retained until about 1920, the fishing rights. Only the citizens corporation has preserved its status as a civil community. The Constitution of 1814, established Locarno, Bellinzona and Lugano as the capitals of the canton, in a six-year rotation. Locarno was the capital of the canton in 1821-27, 1839--45, 1857--63 and 1875-81. In 1838-39, on the initiative of a group of notables, a government building was built. It was sold in 1893 to private company.
Lake Maggiore is a large lake located on the south side of the Alps. It is the second largest lake in Italy The lake and its shoreline are divided between Piedmont and Lombardy region and largest lake of the canton of Ticino, Switzerland. Lake Maggiore is the most westerly of the three great prealpine lakes of Italy, it extends for about 70 kilometres (43 miles) between Locarno and Arona. The climate is mild in both summer and winter, producing Mediterranean vegetation, with beautiful gardens growing rare and exotic plants. Well-known gardens include those of the Isola Madre, Isola Bella and the Isole di Brissago, that of the Villa Taranto in Verbania, and the Alpinia botanical garden above Stresa. Lake Maggiore is 64.37 kilometers / 34¾ nautical miles long, and 3 to 5 km (2 to 3 miles) wide, except at the bay opening westward between Pallanza and Stresa, where it is 10 km (6 mi) wide. It is the longest Italian lake, but Lake Garda has a greater area. Its mean height above the sea level is 193 metres; a deep lake, its bottom is almost everywhere below sea-level: at its deepest, 179 metres below. Its form is very sinuous, so that there are few points from which any considerable part of its surface can be seen at a single glance. If this lessens the effect of the apparent size, it increases the variety of its scenery. While the upper end is completely alpine in character, the middle region lies between hills of gentler form, and the lower end advances to the verge of the plain of Lombardy. The lake basin has tectonic-glacial origins and its volume is 37 cubic kilometres (9 cu mi). The lake has a surface area of about 213 square kilometres (82 sq mi), a maximum length of 54 km (34 mi) and, at its widest, is 12 km (7 mi). Its main tributaries are the Ticino, the Maggia, the Toce (by which it receives the outflow of Lake Orta) and the Tresa (which is the sole emissary of Lake Lugano). The rivers Verzasca, Giona, and Cannobino also flow into the lake. Its outlet is the Ticino which, in turn, joins the river Po just south-east of Pavia. The lake's jagged banks are surrounded by the Lepontine Alps. The western bank is in Piedmont (provinces of Novara and Province of Verbano-Cusio-Ossola) and the eastern in Lombardy (province of Varese), whereas the most northerly section extends thirteen kilometres (8.1 miles) into the canton of Ticino, where it constitutes its lowest point above sea-level as well as that of Switzerland.

Castelgrande (castello), Sasso Corbaro e Montebello (castello) - I musei dei tre Castelli ospitano storia locale, arte, archeologia e varie esposizioni temporanee.
