Budhanilkantha kathmandu - most beautiful stone carving in Nepal
The Budhanilkantha statue of the Hindu god Vishnu, located approximately 10 kilometers from the center of Kathmandu at the base of the Shivapuri Hill, is the largest and most beautiful stone carving in all of Nepal. It is also the most enigmatic.
Carved from a single block of black basalt stone of unknown origin, the Budhanilkantha statue is 5 meters in length and it lies in a reclining position inside a recessed tank of water (representing the cosmic sea) that is 13 meters in length. Called the Sleeping Vishnu, or Jalakshayan Narayan, the statue depicts the deity reclining on the twisting coils of the cosmic serpent Shesha (Shesha is the eternal, multi-headed king of the serpent deities known as Nagas, and also is the servant of Vishnu). Vishnu’s legs are crossed and the eleven heads of Shesha cradle his head. Vishnu’s four hands hold objects that are symbols of his divine qualities: a chakra or disc (representing the mind), a conch-shell (the four elements), a lotus flower (the moving universe) and the club (primeval knowledge).

Sleeping Vishnu Temple - Kathmandu, Nepal
The Hindu temple of Budhanilkantha is located about 10km north of Thamel and as a result is just a little out of the way and difficult for visitors to reach. But this means the temple retains every aspect of its true religious and cultural character just as has been for hundreds of years. Click this link to see a short video of an early morning visit to the temple.
The Budhanilkantha temple is also called the Sleeping Vishnu, or Jalakshayan Narayan and it is the reclining five metre carved basalt statue of Lord Vishnu that is the focal point of the temple. While the origin of the statue is lost in the mists of time it is thought to have been created in the 7th century by the then monarch of the Kathmandu Valley. So the statue is likely to be nearly 1,500 years old and it has survived much tumult and natural disaters over the centuries unscathed. Indeed, there is little evidence in the complex of damage from the April 2015 earthquake.
The statue of Lord Vishnu is a wonder. He lies reclined and sleeping on a raft of serpents floating in a cosmic lake. Hindu belief says Lord Vishnu spends the annual monsoon months sleeping in his celestial lake and awakens during the Haribodhini Ekadashi festival in October-November.

Swayambhunath temple Nepal before Earthquake
Swayambhunath, Nepal Bhasa is an ancient religious complex atop a hill in the Kathmandu Valley, west of Kathmandu city. It is also known as the Monkey Temple as there are holy monkeys living in the north-west parts of the temple. The Tibetan name for the site means 'Sublime Trees' , for the many varieties of trees found on the hill. Singgu, meaning 'self-sprung'. For the Buddhist Newars in whose mythological history and origin myth as well as day-to-day religious practice, Swayambhunath occupies a central position, it is probably the most sacred among Buddhist pilgrimage sites. For Tibetans and followers of Tibetan Buddhism, it is second only to Boudhanath.
The Swayambhunath complex consists of a stupa, a variety of shrines and temples, some dating back to the Licchavi period. A Tibetan monastery, museum and library are more recent additions. The stupa has Buddha's eyes and eyebrows painted on. Between them, the number one (in Devanagari script) is painted in the fashion of a nose. There are also shops, restaurants and hostels. The site has two access points: a long stairway with 365 steps, leading directly to the main platform of the temple, which is from the top of the hill to the east; and a car road around the hill from the south leading to the southwest entrance. The first sight on reaching the top of the stairway is the Vajra.
Much of Swayambhunath's iconography comes from the Vajrayana tradition of Newar Buddhism. However, the complex is also an important site for Buddhists of many schools, and is also revered by Hindus.

Budha Nilkantha is a very unique Hindu temple in Kathmandu where Lord Mahavishnu is in a sleeping posture. He is resting on the Anantanag- Serpent, and is in the middle of a small water tank (probably symbolizing the ocean). The statue is quite huge, and the Lord is seen holding his Conch, Chakra, Mace, and the Lotus. It's a one of its kind temple, and open to the sky. Legend says this is a floating granite stone and never dried up tank for centuries. amazing beautiful sculpture in water, wonder how this was made so long ago at this then remote location. Must see shrine with no restriction to dress code etc, Water in the tank is auspicious but now restricted due to large group taking it out in bottles. Visitors are not allowed to take photographs. Few small shrines are located around the main shrine. The temple is located about 10 kms from the Kathmandu city center. #Budhanilkantha #Kathmandu #Nepal

Kailash/Manasarovar Yatra!
Budhanilkantha Temple is situated below the Shivapuri Hill at the northern end of the kathmandu valley. Sleeping Vishnu is carved on a huge black stone. An interesting feature of this shrine is that when Nepal was a Kingdom, the reigning King of Nepal was not to visit the spot according to an old tradition.
The statue of Budha Nilkantha is considered the largest stone carving in Nepal.
The Budhanilkantha Temple has become the site where Haribondhini Ekadashi Mela takes place on the 11th day of the Hindu month of Kartika (October–November). Attended by thousands of pilgrims, it is the temple's principal festival in celebration of the awakening of Lord Vishnu from his long sleep.
