Japan - Tokyo - Akihabara
Akihabara (Japanese: 秋葉原) is a common name for the area around Akihabara Station in the Chiyoda ward of Tokyo, Japan. Administratively, the area called Akihabara mainly belongs to the Sotokanda (外神田) and Kanda-Sakumachō districts in Chiyoda. There exists an administrative district called Akihabara in the Taitō ward further north of Akihabara Station, but it is not the place people generally refer to as Akihabara.
The name Akihabara is a shortening of Akibagahara (秋葉が原, autumn leaf field), which ultimately comes from Akiba (秋葉), named after a fire-controlling deity of a firefighting shrine built after the area was destroyed by a fire in 1869.[1]
Akihabara gained the nickname Akihabara Electric Town (秋葉原電気街 Akihabara Denki Gai) shortly after World War II for being a major shopping center for household electronic goods and the post-war black market.[2][3] Nowadays, Akihabara is considered by many to be an otaku cultural center and a shopping district for video games, anime, manga, and computer goods. Icons from popular anime and manga are displayed prominently on the shops in the area, and numerous maid cafés are found throughout the district.

Udon Noodle Eating Spree & Tempura Binge ★ ONLY in JAPAN
UDON!! A hot bowl of noddles in Tokyo always hits the spot on a cold day. Instead of ramen, let's go for UDON, which is both healthier (don't eat too much tempura!) and more fun to eat. In this episode, John travels from Tokyo to Kagawa Prefecture and the Sakuki region for handmade bowls of udon noodles and soup. Let's explore the kitchen, watch them cook and serve like pros -- and of course EAT, EAT and EAT!
What makes UDON better than RAMEN?
★ It's healthier. The soup is not as oily.
★ The noodles are thicker.
★ It's cheaper!
★ Tempura!! Pick your side dishes.
★ It tastes great cold (bukkake udon) perfect for summer.
★ Customize it any way you like in the self-serve style.
How to Make Udon (Sanuki Style):
INGREDIENTS
Wheat Flour / 500g
Salt / 15g
Water / 240cc or 1 cup
(makes 3-4 Servings)
- Mix and knead the dough.
- Make a ball and roll it out and fold it several time.
- Roll it to about a 4mm thickness.
- Cut into strips of the same thinckness. It will expand in water.
- Flour the noodles and add to boiling water then lower heat for 10-15 minutes. Stir the noodles.
- Add dashi (fish stock stock), ginger and negi -- and your favorite tempura! Chikuwa is the most popular.

Akihabara
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Akihabara (Japanese: 秋葉原), also known as Akihabara Electric Town (Japanese: 秋葉原電気街 Hepburn: Akihabara Denki Gai), is a district of Tokyo, Japan. It is located less than five minutes by rail from Tokyo Station. Its name is frequently shortened to Akiba (アキバ) in Japan. While there is an official locality named Akibahara, which is also 秋葉原 in kanji, nearby (as part of Taitō-ku), the area known to most people as Akihabara (including the railway station of the same name) also include Soto-Kanda, a part of Chiyoda-ku.
Akihabara is a major shopping area for electronic, computer, anime, games and otaku goods, including new and used items. New items are mostly to be found on the main street, Chūōdōri, with many kinds of used items found in the back streets of Soto Kanda 3-chōme. New parts for PC-building are readily available from a variety of stores. Tools, electrical parts, wires, microsized cameras and similar items are found in the cramped passageways of Soto Kanda 1-chōme (near the station). Foreign tourists tend to visit the big name shops like Laox or other speciality shops near the station, though there is more variety and lower prices at locales a little further away. Akihabara gained some fame through being home to one of the first stores devoted to personal robots and robotics.
The area was just out of Sujikai-gomon city gate (present Mansei bridge) which was one of the city gates (Mitsuke) of old Edo (Tokyo). It was the gateway from inner Edo to northern and northwestern Japan and Kan'ei-ji temple in Ueno. Many dealers, craftsmen and relatively lower class samurai lived there.
Akihabara Station
Akihabara Station (秋葉原駅 Akihabara-eki) is a railway station located in Tokyo's Chiyoda ward. It is at the center of the famous Akihabara shopping district specializing in electronic goods.

Get lost in... Tokyo, Japan (Travel Vlog, Ep 1, Lumix G7)
Hope you are all well!
Here is the 1st episode of my travel series ^Get lost in...^!
A series were I get lost, on purpose! So either you don^ have to or you end up really wanting too!!!

Every little helps me continue making videos and in addition you will receive a special thank and mention in the credits starting from 1$!
In this series I travel the world and on my first day, I get lost, on purpose! The idea is that I will hopefully soak up the experience of how helpful people can be in a foreign country when you are completely lost! Also this way I am able to bring you closer to areas that you might not find on a travel guide! When doing this I take a train to a random destination with my phone switched off, then I basically walk about for 5,6 hours and just walk in to random shops, alleyways and quite often police stations! Of course not everywhere is completely of the books, I might end up deciding to follow a well known route or trying to find a well known landmark, but the journey there is never with my phone or taxi, it is mostly by foot in the hopes of meeting new people and discovering new sites!
I hope I can inspire you to try the same, however always be safe and have a back up plan just in case!
That being said, what a way to start of my journey as I begin in TOKYO!
Friendly people with calm demeanor living in a HUGE city where tradition meets modern tech!
Tokyo is the capital of Japan and according to Wikipedia it is the most populous metropolitan area in the world!
The Shibuya crossing is the world^s busiest pedestrian crossing and there you will also have the chance to meet Hachiko the dog who sits at the busiest meeting point in Tokyo!
And if you are as lucky as I was you might just capture a glimpse of Mario and Luigi on their carts trying to get away from the police as they throw banana peels everywhere!
The Police museum in Kyobashi, Chuo is actually a fun place to take kids believe it or not, the staff is ultra friendly and speak good English.
Another great attraction is the Imperial Palace in Chiyoda, strangely quiet for being right in the middle of such a busy district, the palace offers amazing photo opportunities for travellers from all over the world.
The banking district is HUGE as are the buildings if you are into modern architecture this is one place I highly recommend.
Need your retro gaming fix? Akihabara is the place to go, why not visit the Retro Game Camp? You can find them at Sinsuehiro BLD. C, 3-14-7, Sotokanda, Chiyoda-Ku, Tokyo. Their staff is extremely friendly and trust me, as a retro master of disaster, they know their games!!!
Here a link to their website if you which to pre order a classic...
retrogamecamp.com/en
If you do now want to get lost on purpose, like who would, right?
Then you can contact the Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO) they are involved in a broad range of activities promoting travel to Japan (not just Tokyo) and can help you plan activities and prepare for a safe and fun journey all throughout Japan!
I was asked how much I spent per night in Japan and most people expected it to be very expensive however I only spent around 36$30Euros25Pounds a night at Narita View Hotel which is located in the Chiba Prefecture and is very clean, it has a shuttle bus that takes you to Narita Airport and from there you can make your way to Tokyo City Center!

and last but not least I would like to give a big shout out to my friends who run the Zenmarket over in Japan! Need things from Japan but you can^t speak Japanese? Or the company does not offer International delivery? Do not worry, I got you covered!
Head on over to the Zenmarket team and for as little as 3$ per item they will take care of the rest, thanks to them you are now able to buy from Rakuten, Amazon JP, Yahoo JP and any other onine market place! Consolidation and Shipping insurance is Free!!

Our first stop is Kanda Matsuya- when a restaurant is over 130 years old, you know they must be doing something right. Soba are buckwheat noodles and at Kanda Matsuya they make them fresh (you can watch them being made at the back of the restaurant). The traditional atmosphere of the restaurant is an experience in itself but the soba which are served both hot and cold are a revelation. Nutty and chewy, we eat ours cold, dipping them into tsuyu a soy based dipping sauce.
Next we head to Ueno for some street food, to a popular stall selling deep fried cutlets and beer at Ameyoko Street Market. We eat a high grade beef mince cutlet (menchi katsu)and wash it down with a cold beer.
Our final stop is Delifucious a burger joint in the suburb of Naka Meguro. The name of the restaurant was coined by the chef owner who wanted to combine the words delicious and f*cking to represent his food. And it's the perfect name- the uniquely Japanese burgers and hotdogs are incredible. The boiled conger tempura dog is melt in your mouth- a combination of thinly sliced cucumber and a filet of buttery conger eel that's battered and deep fried before being drizzled in a sticky, sweet sauce made from eel broth, soy and mirin. The Kobuzime fish burger contains a thick, juicy filet of fish that sits on a bed of slaw which is studded with tsukemono, tart Japanese pickles and slathered in a tofu and kombu (kelp) sauce. Creative, fresh, f*cking delicious food created by a former sushi chef. Well worth seeking out!

VIDEO SCRIPT:
So I was strolling and patrolling around the mean streets of Shinjuku when I got the sudden urge to visit a Japanese fast food restaurant. I mean don’t get me wrong, these city lights were looking pretty decent, but truth be told, I wanted to embark on a fast food tour of epic proportions. I wanted to consume a large quantity of calories in a short span of time, so I figured I’d sprint on over to a restaurant called Abura Soba. Now, word on the street is this is a pretty good place to get yourself some noodles in Tokyo, so I waltzed on into there and started scoping it out. Now, they got different soba bowl sizes here but they’re all the same price, so I figured I might as well go for the jumbo size of the spicy variety. After all, you only live once baby. Might as well make it a spicy life. So I made my purchase and gave my tickets to the maestro, and when she brought out my bowl of soba I was feeling a tad contemplative and feeling a tad confused. I mean, I did order the spicy soba but it wasn’t looking too spicy to me and then suddenly the maestro there gave me the low-down on the situation. Apparently the first step is you’re supposed to put some chili oil and vinegar into the mix. So I grabbed that vinegar and supposedly for the jumbo size I gotta do 4 swirls. Man oh man, I guess I pretty much have to do everything around here. So I grabbed that chili oil and I’m supposed to put in 4 swirls of that in as well. Seems to me like I’m exerting a lot of effort around here. A REAL lot of effort and I’m starting to break a sweat, it’s just that intense baby. So while I was at it, I figured I might as well dip into this tamanegi action, AKA diced onions. I got myself a spoonful, put in on top of my bowl of abura soba, then decided I might as well get myself another spoon of onions. After all, I’m thinking these onions might have some kind of enzymes of phytochemicals or some kind of nutritional value. I mean I’ll tell ya baby, I have to counteract all these empty calories somehow, right? Now, in addition to that oil and vinegar I put in there, the maestro told me there was a special sauce at the bottom but I couldn’t really see it yet. But basically that Grade A maestro instructed me to continue mixing that bowl and wow just wow, I think I actually found the special sauce. And I must say, it felt pretty heart-warming know that that maestro was looking out for me like that. Seemed to me like that coy and carefree maestro had my best interests at heart, and I must say I was pretty impressed. But anyway, I’m getting a tad off topic over here. The main thing is these soba noodles in Japan seemed like they may just improve my life. Granted, they were so soaked in oil and sauce that they were pretty hard to mix and pick up, but that’s just part of the charm, baby. So I grabbed myself a gigantic wad of those noodles and I took myself an animalistic chomp. And wow, baby, as soon as I took that cold, calculating bite, I realized that coming into this restaurant was a pretty good decision, dare I say a decent decision. These oil-soaked noodles were tasting just a tad sweet, just a tad salty, and they were spicy beyond belief. I mean, the spice level was not unbearable, but at the same time it was definitely up there, let’s just put it that way, babycakes ...

Our first stop is for tonkatsu- breaded, deep fried pork cutlets which are a must eat when in Japan. Ponchi-ken hold a Michelin Bib Gourmand 2017 award for their Okinawan pork cutlets which are breaded in a light panko crumb and deep fried to golden perfection. The pork is juicy and flavoursome and together with the accompanying rice and fresh, shredded cabbage, makes for a memorable meal. We suggest visiting at lunch time when the prices are more affordable for their rosu katsu set meal and where their katsu curry is on offer. Tonkatsu, half a soft boiled egg, piles of thinly shaved cabbage, pickles, rice and a thick, spicy curry sauce that will have you weeping with pleasure. Don't miss this!
We then head to a conveyor belt sushi restaurant for a sushi feast. Sushi trains can be a really affordable way to enjoy sushi in a city where it can be one of the most expensive meals to eat. Hanamaru balances affordability with excellent quality fish. It's said that Hanamaru (fish) buyers are so well respected in the trade that they have special access to top quality fish at Tsukiji fish market. The restaurant is located on the tenth floor of the Tokyu Plaza building in Ginza so you can enjoy a spectacular view of the city whilst you dine. Their aburi salmon, roasted eel and fatty minced tuna sushi are especially worth eating. English menus are provided and staff are very friendly.
