The Arniston Spa Hotel in Arniston at South Africa's Overberg Coast
Early morning in Arniston at South Africa's Overberg Coast. The fishermen from the village of Kassiesbaai are launching their boats. Tension on the men's faces. Will it be a good day? Will the weather hold?
Next to the fishing harbour - right at the Indian Ocean - the Arniston Spa Hotel - one of the best wellness venues at the Cape. The rooms are spacious with a generous lay-out. With balconies and stunning seaviews. The day starts with a sumptuous breakfast in the sunny conservatory.
There is a lot to see in Arniston. For instance the old village of Kassiesbaai - the bay of the little boxes - with its thatched, whitewashed Fisherman's houses. Or the beautiful swimming beaches of Arniston at the aquamarine sea. Or the huge sand dunes in the Waenhuiskrans nature reserve.
In the hotel's exclusive wellness sanctuary, professional therapists pamper the guests with beauty treatments and body therapies. There are also saunas, a Turkish steam chamber and a tranquillity lounge. The bar for lunches, snacks and drinks is open all day.
The fischermen have returned from the sea. Relief and happy faces. It's been a good day. The catch is Red Roman. This delicious fish is sold to Cape Town. And will of course feature on tonight's dinner menu, prepared to perfection in the renowned kitchen of the Arniston Hotel.
Yes, it is true what is said about the Arniston Hotel: One of the world's great Getaways.
Arniston and the Fishermen of Kassiesbaai
Sunrise in Arniston at South Africa's Overberg Coast. It's getting hectic in the little harbour. The fishermen from the village of Kassiesbaai are launching their boats. Tension on the men's faces. Will the calm weather hold? Or will a storm come up?
The quaint hamlet is a national monument. The name Kassiesbaai is Afrikaans meaning bay of the little boxes - because the thatched, whitewashed Fisherman's houses look like boxes if you see them from far.
Arniston has beautiful swimming beaches, with fine sand and turquoise blue water. In summer it's wunderful to go for a swim here. The Waenhuiskrans Nature Reserve with its huge sanddunes is ideal for long walks along the coast. Next to the fishing harbour lies the Arniston Spa Hotel - one of the best wellness venues at the Cape. The rooms have a generous lay-out. With balconies and stunning seaviews. There are also many holiday houses for rent in Arniston.
In the afternoon the fischermen return from the sea. The first incoming boat had no luck at all. No fishes. The weather was too stormy, the sea too rough. But then, on the second boat: Smiling faces. These men had better luck. The fish was caught in great deapth today. The catch of the day is mainly Red Roman. This delicious fish is sold to Cape Town. The prices for fish are good there. Red Roman will - of course - also feature on the hotel's dinner menu tonight.
After just an hour the daily event is over. Then it is getting quiet again in the little harbour of Arniston. What remains are the gentle sounds of the sea.

FISHERMEN AT ARNISTON
This short film was taken at the fishing village of Arniston close to the southern tip of South Africa in 2000. It shows the small craft coming in from the sea, pulling the boats from the water and unloading the fish which appears to be quite a community affair.

wreck of the Arniston,South Africa, 1815
Arniston is a small village near Cape Agullas in South Africa. It was named after the East Indiaman Arniston, which was wrecked on the sand dunes in 1815 with the loss of over 300 men, women and children.
The Overberg in South Africa's Western Cape Province
On the way from the Cape to the Overberg. A mountain range lies inbetween, the Hottentots Holland Mountains. In the olden days it was difficult to get OVER THE BERG. But nowadays the Overberg can easily be reached via the Sir Lowry's Pass, completed in 1830.
Once arrived on top, the scenery changes. In front of us lies a high plateau, softly ondulating. With endless wheat fields and pastures with sheep and cattle. We are in the Overberg.
The main attraction for visitors however: a magnificent coastline - with quiet bays and coves and wide sandy beaches. Cape Agulhas, southernmost point of Africa, is also part of the Overberg coast.
A juwel is the seaside resort of Arniston with the quaint fishermen's hamlet of Kassiesbaai. Early in the morning the fishermen launch their colourful boats. In the afternoon they return from the sea with their catches, always a fascinating event. Next to the village: The Waenhuiskrans Nature Reserve with its huge sanddunes - ideal for coastal walks.
Most popular town on the Overberg Coast is Hermanus, the whale capital of the world. Every year between July and November hundreds of Southern Right Whales enter the calm waters of Walker Bay for breeding. The Whale Crier of Hermanus blows his kelp horn, when whales have been sighted. Then everybody looks out onto the sea. What makes Hermanus and the neighboring village of De Kelders so special: The marine mammals come within a few metres of the cliffs and can be watched at close range.

Some video of low flying at Waenhuiskrans (Arniston) South Africa - December 2018. The south- west coast of South Africa is extremely beautiful and well protected. Situated inside a protected military zone, not much development has happened on this coast since the early 1980's.
