Maitai Bay
This is a special one for us. Maitai Bay in northern New Zealand lies on the Karikari Peninsula.
We met wonderful people and spent some extraordinary days exploring this natural playground.
Hopefully you enjoy this short compilation.
Shot in early January 2018.

Mangrove seedling mower hovercraft during trials in Tauranga Harbour.
Bay of Plenty Regional Council commissioned Fieldmaster to develop this innovative tool to help support Estuary Care volunteers in their efforts to hold the line on mangrove expansion into open water areas of Tauranga Harbour.
Mangroves are a natural part of a healthy estuary system but they’ve spread exponentially in Tauranga Harbour since the 1940s in response to climate and land use changes.
The hovercraft has been designed and tested to make sure that it’s impacts on the estuary and wildlife are minimal and it targets only mangrove seedlings, leaving mature mangrove forests intact.
It's just one tool in a coordinated catchment management programme focused on reducing the sediment run-off that promotes mangrove growth. Find out more at boprc.govt.nz/taurangaharbour

Bicycle Ride Tahunanui - Rocks Road - Maitai, Nelson, New Zealand, 6 May 2018
Video clip of a bike ride in Nelson, New Zealand. Starting point was Tahunanui Beach:
along Rocks Road, Nelson Port and finally along the Maitai river. It was a beautiful sunny autumn day.
It might give you an idea how beautiful Nelson is, even at this time of the year. We have these conditions quite often.
I used this occasion to try a few things out:
The GPS data was derived from a Polar V800, the video captured with a ReplayXD helmet camera, which is really not up to date anymore. The clip was then stabilised and rotated with ProDrenalin and finally authored with Garmin VIRB Edit.
I apologise for the poor quality and the terrible audio, though.
Taiohi-Taiao - Freshwater from source to sea.
Local people from the business, iwi, recreation and conservation sectors share their views on freshwater issues and management in the Te Awanui Tauranga Harbour catchment.
These interviews were recorded for sharing with secondary school students that attended Bay of Plenty Regional Council’s Taiohi-Taiao (Youth Jam) in May 2015.
Interviewees include Al Fleming (Forest and Bird), Baden Prentice (New Zealand Deerstalkers Association), Charlie Tawhiao (Tangata Whenua), Chris Battershill (University of Waikato); Nicola Foran (Trustpower), Rick Powdrell (Federated Farmers), Ross Bawden (Kiwi Fruit Growers) and Tania Bui (Tourism industry).
Each of the speakers were asked the same questions:
- Why is water and catchment management important to the job that you do/your organisation?
- From your organisation or industry’s perspective what are the big issues for water and catchment management right now and in the long term?
- What do you think needs to happen to address these issues?
Watch a mangrove mulching machine in action
Mangrove mulching machine operating in Waikareao Estuary, Tauranga harbour 2011. The debate about cutting down our native forests was settled in favour of conservation decades ago, but arguments over our native mangroves won't be going away soon.
One reason for this is that mangroves are spreading and some see them as a weed -- albeit a native one -- rather than the foundation of a valuable ecosystem.
A lot of these arguments, because they involve small communities, can be very divisive, says Forest & Bird Seabird Conservation Advocate Karen Baird.
Karen has experienced these bitter arguments first hand through her work trying to protect mangroves at Mangawhai Harbour in Northland and at Whangateau, north of Auckland, where she lives.
She treasures the mangroves that start at the end of her back lawn. I canoe through those mangroves and come out into the estuary. It's a marine forest, it's beautiful, you get all this dappled light coming through and weirdly twisted trees and further down you get these quite deep channels. You see schools of fish swimming around and you can hear banded rails calling from the mangroves, which is really cool, she says.
